I’m upset that I’ve got to wait another year to see what happens next.
But I’m kinda relieved too. I don’t know if I can handle any spontaneous crying jags.

When I finish bingewatching series, as I do “Orange” and other faves such as “House of Cards” and “Marco Polo,” I feel as if I’ve broken up with a partner and am on the dating market desperately seeking a new series.
To me she looks a lot like Ellen Degeneres. I can see a bit of Anderson C. too though.
100% agreed on all counts except I’m avoiding the spoilers in this thread, even the ones for episodes I’ve already seen. Like you I’ve been doling them out and right now I have 3 to go. Love how they’ve been dealing with race relations and white privilege, yeah. Plus who among us wouldn’t love to bond with others over hate for anything Scientology?!!
Muslim Girl resembles “Nola Darling” from Spike Lee’s film She’s Gotta Have It, to me. I loved the scene where most people at the table were hating on The Wiz and Crazy Eyes chimed in saying she loved when Glinda the Good Witch came in all sparkly… and someone had to point out that was Wizard of Oz, NOT The Wiz. Dangit! Really enjoying this season.
I think I remember showrunner Jenni Kohan saying that each season would represent about three months. Piper first came to prison in October, so it may now be the end of September.
Just finished last night. Well, this morning, of course, since I meant to just watch one episode before bed…
The last 2 episodes were really emotional. I didn’t think the rest of the season was too rollercoaster-y but the last 2 really ramped it up. The rest of the season was tense, tho.
I’m glad they got past the “Piper is the new head bitch” thing pretty quickly, within an episode or two. That would have been too unbelieveable. And I could not have stood that much Taylor Schilling.
It makes me angry that this is a minimum security prison and this is how the guards and administration act. I can only imagine how much more horrible it is up the line!
Random thoughts on episode 7:
The actress who played Lolly as a young adult did a great Lori Petty impression. My wife and I actually convinced ourselves it had to be Petty with makeup and camera tricks.
I found it hard to believe Aleida wouldn’t know that she was capable of doing professional-quality nail work, and that it would be a marketable skill for her. Unless it was something she learned to do in prison, I guess.
I watched all the way through season 3 but by the end I was pretty much sick of all the characters and thought the story had gone off the rails. I didn’t plan on watching further. Last night I was bored and wide awake and noticed the new season was up on Netflix so I decided to check out the first episode just to see what the fallout of the big “escape” was. Damned if I didn’t get sucked in and binged the whole thing last night and today.
They definitely did a much better job this season.
Shit! Not Poussey! She has been my favorite character all the way through the series.
I too am dying to know what is in that chicks file! I’m thinking it must more weird than heinous, otherwise she wouldn’t be in minimum security, would she? I guess some of the others did have murders on their records.
Enjoyed seeing some more flashbacks/back stories.
I have to disagree a little. I find her Russian accent a little overdone. I’ve had some Russian and Lithuanian kayaking friends and talk to a lot of truck drivers from that part of the world. Just sounds grating to me. I mentioned this in last season’s thread and nobody chimed in to back me up, so maybe it’s just me.
I think it got pretty dark and, for lack of a better term, very prison movie-ish. The previous seasons had a dark humour going on, and terrible shit happened on the regular but always with a whimsy side - like the clandestine smuggling ring running… mascara and maxi pads. This season however ? We got
ethnic gangs with shivs, guard getting chopped into pieces, a prison riot, a girl going insane in the SHU and slitting her wrists, a work gang, crazy sadistic guards, a branded swastika (Oz, anyone ?) and Cool Hand Luke style punishments. S’a bit heavy, innit ?
And of course the whole finale. Though I did like the fact that nobody’s right in that - the black girls calling it what it ain’t and screaming for punishment shouldn’t (and aren’t helping), the guards are wrong in how they react to it but you can see how the peer pressure keeps the “good guys” quiet, MCC of course is hilariously terrible about it all, Caputo’s being his usual bitch self…No easy answer.
I did love Piscatela’s assessment of Luzschek too. “I’m confused. Because you should so be working at Gamestop” :). But then again Luzschek is probably my favorite character and the guy playing him just keeps knocking it out of the park.

[spoiler] the killing off of Poussey. Clearly it was an impactftul plot point but is there also something behind the scenes with Samira Wiley?

From what I’ve read on the interwebs, Jenji Kohan wanted it to be truly senseless and happening to a popular character for maximum shock value. I guess she’s taking cues from GoT now :). Point is, Poussey was at the same time one if not the most harmless girls on the show and a fan favorite. Also somebody who really didn’t deserve to be in prison in the first place. It was planned from the start of shooting, but only the actress playing Poussey knew she was going to die at the end of the season.
After 3+ seasons of wondering how Suzanne ended up in prison, the revalation was so, so sad. Maritza’s “how I ended up in prison” story was interesting and totally fit her character.
Just finished it tonight. Not too many things on TV make me watch a scene through my fingers like a little kid. Poussey’s death did it. It was just brutal to watch. All three people involved in it were likable characters-- Suzanne, Poussey and the poor schmuck C.O.
I keep seeing people in this thread wondering about what was in that one chick’s file-- can someone remind me of the context of that? What C.O. was looking at her file, why was he looking and what was his reaction? I’m drawing a blank.
This new season was okay, but I wasn’t on the edge of my seat like in other seasons.
Weird detail, but I just noticed all the guards wear their flag patches with the union on the right - is that the actual way that a flag patch is supposed to go? Looks backwards to me, since we usually see the flag with the union on the left, but I know there’s tons of weird rules around flags and flag patches so I guess it’s just one of those oddities?
Yes, it’s normal. Flag patches are supposed to look like a real flag would if blown by the wind while hanging from a mast. So you get a “normal” version for the left arm and a “backwards” version for the right.
It was when she was in Caputo’s office after she was found hiding out in the woods. I forget the exact dialogue but basically he looks at her file and gets a quizzical / quasi-horrified look on his face suggesting it contained some really odd deeds. I’m assuming her crimes are more weird than heinous since he just sent her off to bed like CindyLou Who.
I totally agree but I have no non-popular-media knowledge of Russian accents, so I don’t know if it’s me or the actor. I also find I don’t like TV Russian accents in general, so still it could be me.
Since you have some real-world experience, have you ever run in to any Russian accents in media that sound right?
I can’t think of a movie or TV show in which an English speaking actor did a Russian-Eastern European accent that I’ve seen recently enough to give an example. I’m rewatching The Sopranos currently and the season I’m on now has some Russian characters but I’m assuming the actors were all actually Russian.
I’ve seen a few CS threads about English and Australian actors doing American accents and vice versa but I don’t know that we have enough Russian speakers here to do a thread on that.
I never saw them do it on screen but I bet Natalie Wood and Mila Kunis could do killer Russian accents
The singer of the theme song has a very authentic Russian accent.
