Orange is the New Black, Season 4

I know mental illness shouldn’t be funny, but I can’t help laughing at Lorna’s behavior this season.

Worried Lorna: I think my new husband might be lonely. Will you go visit him? After all, he is your brother-in-law.
Lorna’s Sister: All right.
(LATER)
Lorna’s Sister: I did what you asked. Vinny seems very nice.
Suspicious Lorna: What did you wear?
Lorna’s Sister: Um, a blouse and skirt?
Meltdown Lorna: Oh! My!! GAWD!!!

BTW, the character with the surprising or shocking offence in her file (we don’t know what it is yet) is named Maureen Kukudio.
Played by Emily Althaus.

OK, I just watched the scene where Linda pulled the gun out. I loved Joe’s response afterwards - ‘That was so hot.’ I was thinking the same thing.

They did that one as a prequel: it was called Star Trek: Voyager.

She’s pretty! It’s amazing how different the actors look IRL. Look how pretty Blanca is without her unibrow. Ditto Pennsatucky. And speaking of accents, Morello (Yael Stone) is Australian. That crazy Brookston accent she puts on is amazing, and even more so for her not being American.

This show seems to alternate among slapstick, soap opera, psychodrama, crime drama, exposé but … it all adds up to a work of art greater than the sum of its parts! After watching Season 4, I’ve decided Orange is one of my very favorite series of all, behind only Breaking Bad, Wire and Sopranos.

Sad about the long wait for Season 5 …

Finally finished the season, right off the bat, I was kinda surprised that they were still doing back stories. I figured that would be a one season ‘gimmick’. I don’t have a problem with it, I just assumed they were done with it.

Spoilered because it’s a reply to a spoiler

While those reasons are probably, at least, part of it, she also mentioned that after she showers she rubs canned tuna (or whatever she can find) on her because it keeps the guards away from her (and probably the other inmates as well). It wouldn’t surprise me if teasing her hair, letting her unibrow grow out and being other wise unkempt also played into that. "Cavewoman’ looking Blanca that smells like shit is more convincing than pre-prison (good looking) Blanca that happens to smell like she spilled something on herself. She does work in the cafeteria, they would probably just assume it’s from that. They way she looks now, the idea is that she has BO and it keeps them away from her.

For the life of me, I’m having a brain fart and can’t remember why Piper kept telling everyone that in the first few episodes. Can someone be a lamb and remind me? I see it has to do with sending Ruby Rose to max, but I don’t recall why (and she was back for, like, one episode I think.

There’s a lot of guards on power trips and Caputo (even before the promotion) wasn’t usually on the floor. He probably didn’t know a lot about what was going on. Also, before MCC took over, the place was public so they had to maintain their image to the tax payers (as I recall, they were on the brink of going out of business), now they have to do the same to the investors. It wouldn’t surprise me, but I really have no idea, if max was actually less shitty, WRT how they treat the inmates since they’re not keeping them in line just for shits and giggles, but because they’ve actually been deemed dangerous and have more stringent routines that have to be followed. But that’s speculation on my part.

That seems to be part of her thing. IIRC from the little I watched of Sons Of Anarchy, she looked similar. They may be playing into her raspy voice. It does make her sound a bit edgy and like she’s had a hard life.

Couple of my own thoughts. Spoiled, because, why not…

When I first started, my sister told me she already knew that someone died (and who). When I saw Voss’s hitman, I figured that was it, but was surprised that a character as minor as that would have been in an EW article. Then I thought it was going to be Sophia (she was missing from Solitary, blood on the walls, and assumed the author hadn’t made it through the season. Even just watching through that episode, everyone knows someone isn’t dead unless you see them dead (or are explicitly told).
I was really surprised it was Poussey. But, as far as major characters go, she was a minor one. It’s not like it was Nikki or Doggett or even one of Red’s greenhouse crew. I was also surprised that Caputo defended the MCC guards. He basically ignored the fights in the TV room, he told Piscatella to take the day off when he could probably have fired him with cause (there’s got to be a camera in there), and, what I’m still trying to understand is during the TV interview, everyone flipped out that he was going rogue, but he still defended Baily’s handling of Poussey.
Yes, I know, the giant said he and everyone else would walk out and Caputo back off, but ISTM, all he had to do was say 'you disobeyed my orders, you’re guards not investigators and I told you not to talk to the inmates while I was out of the building, you incited a fight and, on top of it all, one the guards, on your watch, killed an inmate. If you want to walk, walk, but you’re not going to find another guard job…and this is all ignoring the fact that I’ve heard reports of some of the guards making inmates stand on tables for hours or even days with no food, sleep or even use of a bathroom, care to show me where you pulled that from in the MCC handbook"

Yes, I know, it’s a story and they needed the same guards there at the at that point in order to make the last few minutes work, but it seemed like sloppy writing when the best they could come up with was giving Piscatella a few hours of paid leave and Baily a Valium and some fatherly advice that maybe he’s not cut out for this job.

Lastly, as far as finale is concerned, it was great. Judy getting cornered by a riot and thinking it was about her, was funny. However, Daya grabbing the gun, while it may have been partially about her falling in with the wrong crowd, I think it was at least in part about it being kicked in her direction (though it could have been kicked in anyone’s direction). In my opinion, it would have made the most sense for Sophia to grab it. As of right now, short of Jefferson, who’s too level headed to do something like this, Sophia, I think, is the person that would pull a gun on a guard, especially in her state of mind. If not her, maybe So So, but mainly because she does weird shit sometimes.

Also, one last thing, I’m curious as to when this season was filmed. Not only did that make a BLM refrence, they even managed to get in a (very possible) “cop” killing. BLM, which has been around for a few years now, doesn’t seem like it would have been popular enough to A)make it into the prison walls and B)get into the writers room in time for this season AND the BLM violence directed at LEOs has been very recent.
Two thoughts for next season:
1)So So will get a much larger role or we’ll get a new happy-go-lucky, level headed inmate to replace Poussey.

2)Caputo will totally sell out to MCC. He’s halfway there already. Didn’t call her parents or the police until a coverup was figured out and he’s, literally, in bed with MCC (Linda). Before that he was sleeping with Fig. Come to think of it. There’s nice metephor there, he likes Linda (MCC), he didn’t like Fig (Litchfield.) but did her anyways…almost like it was a job.

She got drunk on the power of being the head of the panty stealing/selling operation, which gave her the same kind of hold over people that Red had in the kitchen. Then Ruby Rose stole her cash because she was going to be set free, it hurt Piper in the trust department, so she had Ruby sent to max in retaliation. And made sure everybody else know it.

That’s cause she actually had one. She grew up in a no-shit trailer park.

I think it’s also that the prison’s kicked her in the face one too many time, between the baby stuff, Sophia sent to SEG, her guard beau rabbitting and now her mother going away. They had a love-hate thing going but they really supported each other ultimately, kept each other going. Now Daya’s alone and in pain and turning (or letting the Mean Latinas turn) this pain into angry.
Another possibility is that she craves the acceptance of the Mean Latinas - so she feels the need to prove herself to her new friends, driving her to do more extreme shit than they themselves are doing. Quite common in most every insular group - nobody more preachy than a recent convert and so on.
As you mention, BLM has been around for years. It’s also been getting national attention for years. The average person who’s paying attention knows about it. Also, this isn’t supposed to be BLM related violence against cops. It’s Attica.
Yes, quite a contrast to Voyager where it was always a “ugh” moment whenever Janeway came on to bleat out something. Amazing how the same actress can be the best part of one show but the worst part of another.
