I am lucky enough to be in a dull, comfortable rut. Agreeable but boring job with no “future.” Nice apartment in a dull little town. I realize how lucky I am to have the luxury of being bored out of my mind.
My imp of the perverse is whispering to me, “Look for an expensive apartment in Manhattan! A different job, maybe in a new city!”
The ghosts of my parents are saying, “don’t be an idiot–save every cent and do not take any foolish chances!” I will no doubt take their advice.
My imp wants me to say fuck it all and move to Key West where I’ll be poor, but happy and warm. If I’m gonna do it, gotta do it soon. Getting too old to wait tables for long.
For what it’s worth, this doesn’t actually sound to me like an extreme case of risk-taking behavior. If you were considering shooting heroin or taking up nude skydiving, then maybe you should reconsider, but looking for a new job? Sounds like a reasonable thing for a person to do now and then.
Hi! I’m Tripler. You may remember me from such films as “5 Seconds Left, Do I Cut the Red or Blue Wire?” and “Tandem Skydiving with A Rabid Wild Board.” I may seem like an adrenaline junkie, and that’s because… well, I am. That’s why I’m here today to tell you that whatever decision you have today, to just go for it! Go all in! Open the throttle! Pull that trigger! Let it all out! Because New Years Day only comes once a year, and there’s no damn time like the present. Strike while that iron is hot, and that hangover is fresh!
You’ll thank me when it’s all over (even if it only built your character).
This, it makes the adventure fun if you’ve got some spare cash to do it with and some left for when you’re done. I should go on an adventure again myself but I’m stuck in mediocrity at the moment.
This as well. A good friend of mine told me once “The worst that can happen is you’ll have a terrible time, everything will go wrong and it’ll be a disaster…but at least you’ll get a story out of it”
What exactly is a “Rabid Wild Board”? If there’s not to much chance of getting rabies from the splinters I’d be down with trying that.
It’s a stupid autocorrect thing my Android tablet did “for me” when I was taking my hairpin turn at 82.6MPH naked in my Formula 1 racing machine, barely escaping flinging myself off the cliff.

I am always up for an adventure. Well, I used to be- I really had some big ones. Nowadays, I have kids and pets. They’re all, “Give us a place to live! Feed us every day!” Spoilsports. If it was just me, I’d go for it.
Take chances, Eve! It’s too easy to stay in that comfort zone, and go through your day to day wondering “what if”? If you’re in the position to do it, try it!
If I have one regret about my career it was that I did not take greater risks early on. I eventually did break out of that early rut and have experienced a career that’s been much richer in its diversity of achievements and rewards, especially on an intellectual level. I just wished that I had taken that jump sooner instead of wasting time in that earlier job that was, although financially rewarding, far less interesting and stimulating. That was me. Up to you to decide for yourself. Of course, taking risks does not mean taking foolish risks.
You and Eve should just switch places, Prince and the Pauper style. Then you’ll both feel like your changing things up, but without the uncertainty, since you’ll both have a new ready-made rut to slide into.
