Well, this place never ceases to amaze me. I’ve sent something through my online bank (not PayPal).
Just a note, Paypal has recently changed hands, they were bought by ebay, so its not the same company. Dont know if that makes any differance to you…
Contributions now total around $1675.00
What a wonderful thing to wake up to on a beautiful Sunday morning!
I knew they were bought out by eBay, but I’m still not quite comfortable giving access to my banking info to a company that isn’t under the FDIC and isn’t held to regulatory standards. It just makes me uncomfortable.

After looking at a few shipping charged, I’m in agreement with not shipping monitors when not necessary.
I am, however, still accepting the parts and whatnot that folks would like to sell on eBay for donations to the PolyFund. A few folk have mentioned having odds 'n ends as well as puter parts lying around that they’d be willing to sell for proceeds. I’d have to deduction the auction fees to satisfy eBay, but all proceeds after that will go right thru PayPal over to Cheri.
Just so you know. . . . . .
Feh,
Forgive my Suday morning spelling, please.
Since it appears it’s not too late, I’m in too. It’s gonna’ be with the other snail-mail, Scotticher, so twiddle those thumbs a little longer…
What is the hardware tally at this point?
I don’t have any spare cash to send, but I do have a Voodoo5 5500 graphics card that is just sitting collecting dust.
Check’s in the snail mail Scotticher! I only wish it could be bigger.
Merry Christmas Poly! I’ve never had the pleasure of interacting with you on the board, but rest assured this pagan considers herself a better person just for reading your posts. Blessings upon you and yours
To my brother Polycarp (or to those who are in direct contact with him),
I just checked my car this morning. It still runs! Kinda surprising for a guy who is also known as the JunkYardFrog.
Here’s the scoop: '86 Taurus with a small V-6. Gets 21 to 27 mpg. Good tires (fronts are brand new). Good battery. Runs smooth on the freeway (it won’t be setting any land speed records). Gray outside (needs a paint job) and inside. A/C needs to be recharged. Tranny is a little on the clunky side sometimes. Apparently this is fairly common with these early Taurus/Sable models. I’ve seen several of them that needed to have the trans rebuilt at under 100,000 miles, which is not good. No slippage in this one though. Car has 75,000 miles on it. I’ve put 15,000 of those on myself. I don’t remember exactly how long I’ve had it, but I would guess around 2 years. Power windows. Driver’s seat is also power. Radio currently not working. It blew a fuse, twice, and I haven’t taken the time to track down what probably is a short somewhere. I’ve mostly used it to drive to work and back (under 40 miles) but I have taken it to San Diego a couple times (roughly 160 mile round trip).
It’s yours if you can find a way to get to LA/Orange County, however I am a little concerned about it making such a long trip back to your home. I think all the belts are good, but I’m not positive about all the hoses. I would not want it to break down and have you to get stuck in the middle of Texas. Not that there is anything wrong with Texas, I hasten to add.
If you can fly into LAX, or John Wayne International, or Ontario, I will meet you at the airport. You can be on your way with a full tank of gas, after we eat dinner. I would guess it’s a four day drive for one person. I don’t know if you have that kind of time available. Then you have to consider 2 or 3 nights at a motel. I very roughly figure that we are 2700 miles apart, could be 3,000 but that seems unlikely. Probably take 100 gallons of gas, minimum. For some reason this car runs better on the medium grade of gas, although it should run on regular. So you are probably looking at $170.00 minimum for gas, plus some motel costs, plus airfare to get out here. I think you would be more happy recovering your own car than with my “oldie”, but I wanted to offer this as one option for you to consider.
God bless you, and God bless all the Dopers!!! (Having grown up in the '60s, I never thought I would be saying that!)
Peace.
Is there anyone out there in Cali who need to head east for Christmas? Mercutio, you were wanting to take a road trip right?
And I’m sure we could find dopers along the way that would make hotels unneccesary.
Man, I heard about this in my LJ. So wonderful to see the SDMB people’s helping out another. It restores my heart that so many are willing to give.
Happy Holidays everyone!
P.S. It has been suggested to me, over at the Pizza Parlor, that perhaps there might be a reliable Doper in my area (Southern California) who would be willing to transport my car back east to Polycarp. That is not my first choice, since I don’t know any of you (I take that back. I do recognize a few names but the ones I know are also on the east coast.)
I am open to this suggestion, however due to the cost of accomplishing this task (gas, motel, one-way airfare) and the fact that this is an old car to start with, I am a little skeptical that it is practical. Hopefully there is a better solution to the car situation. If that turns out to be the case, I will just open a Paypal account and contribute along with the rest of you great people.
God bless.
This is, without a doubt, one of the most extraordinary threads I have ever read on the SDMB.
If it wasn’t for the fact that I’m moving to Michigan in a week and have tons of expenses due to the relocation, I’d be adding my own contribution to the PolyFund[super]TM[/super].
I’m overjoyed to see Polycarp back on the board!
I don’t have much of anything but I have sent a tiny bit of something as more of an appreciation of the fine man Poly is rather than any sort of assistance.
This past year, I have been blessed and I owe much of it to the amazing outpouring of love from the incredible people here. I know others have needed help since then and yet I have been unable to assist due to limited means.
However, I received my own Christmas miracle around this time last year and I made a vow to make sure and repay that debt every year. This is my well-intentioned, if pitifully small, attempt this year.
May this and every holiday season be filled with love for Poly and family–and everyone else.
This place rules.
This is what the holidays should be about. This is what every day should be about.
So.
Employment. Well, I’ve got a suggestion. It’s not much money, and I don’t know where to go… but why not do what Polycarp does best? Share wisdom. Write.
Yes, I understand that a book would take a while, but I’m not suggesting that. Journalism, maybe? An online or newspaper column, perhaps?
I know many of you don’t believe in God, but it is awesome to see Him at work (here). I was the recipient of a similar kind of miracle last year. While the monetary miracle is awesome (in and of itself) it’s even more mind-blowing to see the love and respect extended to Polycarp. I personally think that’s the bigger miracle. You guys rock!

GOM, just letting you know that the money collected to date is enough for Poly to get his own car back and a fair chunk towards the next payment.
