Great! I spend one weekend offline (family visit) and you guys decide to have Christmas without me! I’m tapped at the moment, but I’ll be able to kick in some $$ from my next paycheck. Will someone e-mail me the relevant info please?
Do you have a PayPal account, or would you feel comfortable GETTING one? That is the option most people are using. Otherwise, email me and I will send you my address for snail mail
cj: Bless you, and everyone! But I was not the first to suggest that we got Poly a computer. tlw and boomvark picked up on that first, and the rest of us were swept along.
God bless everyone. And thank you God, for Your continued blessings.
I’m in Albuquerque, which is a traditional stopping place for people traveling east from California, and I have a spare bedroom. If someone ends up doing this, email me to arrange details.
Polycarp is one of the people I think of immediately whenever I’m challenged to think of a Christian who does his best to act, well, like a Christian. I’m honored to do anything in my power to give him a hand, especially knowing that he’d do the same for someone else.
I am an orthodox agnostic :). But as a number of other non-relgious Dopers have noted, we cannot afford to lose Polycarp’s thoughtful and well-reasoned posts. I don’t post much, but do lurk a lot.
I am still having problems with PayPal, but I just wrote Scotticher for the snail mail address to pass along my modest contribution.
I can’t help but agree how analogous this is to the holiday favorite It’s a Wonderful Life
Yes, we Dopers do ROCK! And props to our friends and sometimes adversaries at the Pizza Parlor, too.
Scotti, I’m still waiting for my PayPal account to be activated, but once it does, my money will be in your hands right away.
(I feel like I’m a day late and a dollar short around here. The Paypal toal so far is staggering! The SDMB community is simply awesome. No other way to describe it.)
Don’t worry. In a week, even two weeks, we will all still love Polycarp and we will probably still be keeping an eye out to make sure that he is all right. We look to have his car back, although I have some doubts about the condition of that car, and we have made sure that we won’t lose his valued council ourselves. (You all understand that this part of it doesn’t count as an act of charity, right? We want him on the board. This is strictly selfish, and watching out for our own interests. The car thing is good, though.)
We need to get a letter of recommendation thread started, too, so we can attest to our belief that anyone who doesn’t hire Poly for whatever Poly says he can do for them is making a mistake. Or perhaps a web site would be better, so Poly doesn’t have to haul around five hundred letters with him.
If it involves writing something that someone will read, and associate with your company, or foundation, you could do no better than to have your representative be Polycarp. Surely anyone with any experience with public relations would realize this. Of course, you probably ought to have him on the board, but you won’t know that until you have him around a while.

For the record, you don’t have to send thousands of dollars to help out. Drink a few less beers this month, smoke less than you normally would. Tell your employer that you have a friend in need and needs a few extra bucks.
Whatever it is, go for the gold and help out Poly, he is one of those that belong here. Get the word out to your friends…he’s a damn good assett (sp) here.
I can’t spell for crap so I apologize but you know what I mean.
It might not be a bad idea, Tris, to look at who on this board knows him well enough and has the professional credentials for it to be truly more than a “Poly’s my friend and I know he can do whatever you need” letter, which while touching might not help as much as a sort of “I am the owner of [X competent business] and Polycarp is as valuable an asset to a company as I can imagine seeing. It is a pity that I live in Babylon 5 or I would personally hire him myself.” thing.
Or is that a bit off base? Keep in mind the time of day this post is being written at;)
With all due respect. Tris (which, let me assure you, is roughly the same amount I afford to our beloved Poly, among others), I disagree with this statement completely. This board is as important to me as nearly anything else in my life, and Polycarp has been a part of it for as long as I have, and longer. I have gained more from his presence here, and from meeting him and seeing someone who, IMHO, lives as he suggests others do (as opposed to the oft-lamented “do as I say, not as I do” way of life), than I gained from most of my years in high school, or from most of my other schooling. The idea that wanting Poly (or quite a few other posters) here is selfish is roughly analagous, to me, to the idea that wanting sanity is selfish. You may feel it is, which is fine, but to me it’s like a piece is missing from my life without Poly. Or my MADs, or my fiancee, or some of the other people on this board I’ve grown to cherish.
Beside which, as evidenced by this thread, he gains peace of mind, happiness, companionship etc. by being here. How is that selfish?
And as William Pulitzer (or rather, the man who played him in “Newsies”) said, “Any man who doesn’t watch out for his own self-interests is a fool.”
OK, Scotticher, with my hubby’s job situation a bit precarious (don’t worry, we’re OK)–I can’t do much right now, but I paypalled you a bit so the Poly’s can get out and see Two Towers. And maybe a popcorn, too.
Edlyn and I visited Poly and his wonderful wife last night. I just have to say what a remarkable epiphany it was for me. To look into the eyes of people and see there the God Whom I know and worship… there simply is no rhetoric to frame the experience.
Thank you, Polycarp and Skulldigger, for welcoming us into your home and hearts, and for sharing the beautiful stories of how you’ve seen God in action. This outpouring of love from Dopers is testament to God’s work in you.
Thank you RT, for letting all of us know. Thank you, Coldfire, for knowing what to do about this thread and doing it. Thank you Scotticher for your good work. Thank you, everyone for caring about your brothers and sisters. God go with you always.
Folks, there is no need to apologize for not sending much or not being able to help at all. Sometimes we are doing better than at other times; if you can’t help now, perhaps at some future date when things aren’t so tight you will be able to help someone else out. Please don’t feel you owe anyone here an apology or explanation. Your good thoughts alone are worth gold.
Could you please email me if you needed a response from me and didn’t get one? I THINK I am caught up through last evening, but I am frankly overwhelmed by the sheer amount of correspondance and I am afraid I missed someone.
I will also, at some point, be responding to those of you who contributed by PayPal, but it may take awhile. Right now I am just wanting to make sure that **IF YOU NEEDED A RESPONSE AND HAVEN"T GOTTEN ONE…PLEASE EMAIL ME AGAIN…**and if so, sorry.
Could someone post this for me at the Pizza Parlor, too? Thanks!
I’ll get back to you tonight with a new total…have to get to work. One of my staff just called with the flu and I am already short-staffed by “half-a-person.” :sigh:
