Polycarp will be offline indefinitely :-(

Thanks for stopping by Poly. I know things will be better for you soon. Good luck with the car and working all of this fee stuff out with them. Maybe they will be flexible and work with you.

Please excuse Home Lice. This must be a poster that has not experienced this level of support from a virtual and real community. Anyway… glad to hear from you.

I’m so glad this is working out well. Love is a wonderful thing. May it go with you always, Polycarp.

Good luck Poly, you’re one of the few Dopers who I always click on to see what you have to say. Religious threads will be incomplete without your voice. Please hurry back.

I’ll keep this one brief, HomeSlice. Show some fucking decorum, or you’re out.

Can’t make it any simpler than that.

Ahem.

Good to see you’re getting back on your feet, Polycarp! Let’s hope this rut you’re in is a short one. Keep us posted, it’s much appreciated.

Polycarp, you are a national treasure!

Same here!

I haven’t kicked anything in to the FUND yet, because I’m not sure if Poly will be needing my car. Hopefully he will have enough funds to get a better car locally than the one I can offer. It sounds like that’s what he has planned. If that’s the case, I’ll send money instead.

Hey Poly!

You listen to the JunkYardFrog now…

If you’re getting something used, set aside a few dollars for repairs. It seems like, no matter how carefully you evaluate a used car, it still ends up needing something done to it before too long.

Sheesh! I guess I’m starting to sound fatherly to Polycarp. Sorry about that. I’m sure you already know about used cars. Would mine help out? Or is it too far away to be useful to you? Let me know here or at the Pizza Parlor. For some reason I cannot access my email account right now.

Great to see you posting again!

God bless.

Wow!!!

Heading towards 7,000 views on this thread…

Remarkable.

I love you, Poly.

I am trying to brainstorm about a car in the area and a mechanic that is good and trustworthy in a reasonable location to Poly. The mechanic can depend partly on the type of vehicle. For example,I know a really good specialist for Mitsubishis/Isuzus. I just had a Toyota specialist recommended.
I am so happy to see the outpouring of love and generosity from everyone here. This shows that Tygr introduced me to a wonderful place.
Poly really has been touched. You can see it in his eyes.

We are going to check in with Poly and Skulldigger to make sure they have what they need around the house. We will be out of town the weekend.

Happy holidays and many blessings to each and everyone of you that have so kindly posted in support of Poly’s situation.

My prayers continue in support of Polycarp and Skulldigger’s situation.

Tris: gotcha:) I think I was a bit over-zealous in defense anyway. Late hour and all that. Plus of late I’ve been emotionally bleeding.

Fizzy and I have been looking at getting a new (to us) car, so lemme just impart the wisdom we’ve picked up from her father:

You’re going for a small car, I think, so your best bet is probably either a Honda, Toyota or (surprisingly enough) Hyundai. All three are very solid cars, run well, get good mileage, etc. The only drawback is they are decently expensive. The 2000 models we’ve been looking at are about 8K (lowest) in this area … we’ve been looking on Carmax’s site of late simply because it’s extremely (IMHO) user-friendly.

Poly, just in case this wasn’t eminently obvious, please keep us updated so we can help you in whatever fashion would be most beneficial:) As you may have seen me post in this forum before, strength lays in knowing your weaknesses (or areas where you need help) and allowing others to help you through them.

You know strength:)

Poly, I’d just like to add a postscript to the best wishes I’ve already sent your way. In a year in which this community has seen so much sadness and loss about which we as a community have been helpless to do anything other than offer moral support, it is bringing me great joy to be part of bringing about a positive outcome for you and Skulldigger. Your allowing us to help you has certainly given me cause for renewed hope and optimism. Thank you.

I don’t know if this is a good option or not, but I’ve got a 1986 Honda Accord with 253K miles on it, that Mrs. F. and I were going to donate to charity shortly. We’d be just as happy to donate it to Polycarp, but it’s got its problems, and it’s old. It would probably need some work just to get it ready for the drive from southern Maryland to Raleigh, is the worrisome part. But just for completeness’ sake, I’ll add it to the options.

RT, Sounds like a good possibility on the car.
I may have found a van for $1000. Might can get the price down. It’s in good shape, new tires, old-84 Plymouth. It’s in the area. The guy selling it is a friend of my brother’s. He is going to find out more tonight or tomorrow.

Wish you the best…I want to say more, but what?

Firefly,

I have a week coming up at the first of the year. I will happily drive the don-a-wreck to the mechanic of greatest reliability in the general vicinity of our esteemed friends, Polycarp, and Skulldigger. Or, I will follow relentlessly behind your own sorry ass as you nurse this aged Honda to the same destination, if you feel it is not reliable enough to let me drive off into the night in it.

Then, we can have it thoroughly appraised and estimated to make sure it is reliable, and that the money available is sufficient to make those repairs. If not, we donate it as is to someone else, and we are out a few days running around. (And you are out a car not worth carrying our friends.) I am confident that a Honda with six or seven hundred dollars of known repairs done just recently will be a trouble free transportation device for at least a few months.

So, Jkayla and the other near by dopers can let us know who, and where to take it, and we can get it there early next year, and it can be in the driveway of casa Polycarp in time for job interviews in January. (not to mention grocery runs, and such.)

Is this a good plan?

Tris

HomeSlice…may I just suggest, with great love, that it is usually not a good idea to make judgements unless you know ALL the details?

Perhaps, and actually PROBABLY, Polycarp was at the library looking for job opportunities through the net…which people tell me is a GOOD place to look for work. Then, after he was done, he thought to himself "Self, I love the people at the SDMB and I would like to stay CONNECTED to them…because they MATTER to me. So, I will spend a few more FREE minutes here, at the library, and say hello and attempt to respond to those who have emailed me with questions (which would, BTW, include me…I had a question about how best to proceed on a matter of faith, and I though Poly could give me some advice…and he DID. GOOD advice, too! I wondered at the time why it took so long for him to respond…if I had asked him and he had TOLD me, this thread might have happened a LONG time ago…but I guess that is irrelevent now.)

Honey, to pull out a very worn cliche ( but, as cliche’s tend to BE, a TRUE one) it is never a good idea to trash someone until you have walked a mile in his/her shoes.

I wish you love, peace and joy. And I hope that you will at least THINK about what I have said. If you wish to discard it, that is your right. I hope you will do me the courtesy of at least THINKING about it, though. As I would extend YOU that same courtesy, where the situations reversed.

AND…in OTHER news, we now have a PayPal total of… (sheesh, I feel like Jerry Lewis, and really…I look NOTHING like him, trust me  )

$2185.00!!!

And I would like to remind you that I have NO idea how much money is coming by USPS mail…so that total could well be, and probably IS, a GREAT deal higher!

ALSO…the generous, loving and WONDERFUL people who donated the computer have emailed me to say that it should be there within the next couple of days. They also told me that it included:

a modem already in it
a DVD Player
Windows 2000
QuickVerse installed
Keyboard
mouse
speakers

AND sent me this message:
“It’s a GOOD computer. Can’t wait to see Poly back on the board…”

BLESS YOU, my friends. You will have a special place in my heart for all time!

Wow.

Hi.

I lurk mostly but I just wanted to say THANK YOU to everybody on this board and those who posted here (and those who didn’t but still offer the same sentiment. I’m not thanking you on behalf of Polycarp (whom I respect and admire–but who doesn’t?), but for my own reasons.

I’ve been going through a pretty dark time in my life lately and it means so much to me to see the best thing done for the best person and by the best people. This is a beautiful thing that’s happened and right now it’s making my life a whole lot better.

So thanks from somebody you didn’t even know you helped.

Denise

I’m so proud to be part of this community.
