Polycarp will be offline indefinitely :-(

Woderful news. I am happy for Polycarp. Maybe this will give him a chance to take advantage of an opportunity that will begin to bring him and his family a greater measure of comfort. HooRah for the Dopers and the Pizza Parlor folks. It all makes me feel good.

Wait! Does this mean that all I need to do to see this kind of love around here is post about 6,000 more messages, all full of wit, literacy, kindness, thoughfulness, erudition, calmness, perspective, open-mindedness, intellectual rigor, tolerance and discipline?

Hmmm, actually, I see that I haven’t posted my first Polycarp-type message yet. Better get started. Soon.

I’ve gotten so much more from this thread, by way of pride in this community, than I’ve given or possibly could give. Merry Christmas, all.

(And that’s the first time in half a century that this lifelong atheist has said that and meant it.)

Scotticher, I just emailed you for some info on where to send a check.

To my dear friend and fellow poster Poly - I was away over the weekend when this thread came into being, and I’ve just now caught up on it. My heart goes out to you as I too have been in precarious financial times before. Let my small contribution now serve as a token of my gratitude for the wealth of love you have shown both me and this online community we call home.

May I paraphrase the late Rev Dr. MLK? - "I have a dream that we will one day live in a world where we will not be judged by the religion we do or do not profess but by the content of our character.”

Your character shines through beautifully.

Like so many others both here and elsewhere, I love you Polycarp.

Merry Christmas.

Bob
aka “Mars Horizon”

I don’t know how I missed this thread, sorry.
Maybe I can help in some way. I’m busted down to my socks, but if he needs a PC I’ve got three complete one’s w/ monitors and printers put away. One’s an old 386, then there’s a 486, and another is a 586. The 386 & 486 are sans hardrdves but the pentium works. All the monitors are good as are the printers and etc.
I don’t know if they’d be of any use, but there they are! Surely one of the 3 can be made to work…

I haven’t had time to read all the posts yet so perhaps someone could update me, 'bout to go xmas w/ folks…be back tomorrow.

Y’all have probably figured out the solution here but if not maybe everyone could just go western union him a few bucks?

P.S. I was just thinking, (I know it’s a long way) and I don’t know how we’d do it,
BUT all the computer stuff I was talking about is in the back of an '85 Jeep Cherokee that was running fine until the damned crankshaft broke (new shaft’s 'bout a $100 bucks at autozone). If there’s a mechanic up there near Poly and y’all can figure a way to get it there. He can have the Jeep and the PC’s, maybe somebody’s headed that way?

anyway, gotta run

Peace

here ya go tkeela. Have a happy holiday.

oops in haste …

You can either email me for my address so you can send a check, or you can contribute by PayPal to Scotticher@aol.com (if you do so, please enter Polycarp in the message area…I am still collecting contributions for another person and I need to know to whom you intend the money be given.) Click the “service” box and I don’t think anything will be deducted by PayPal

Geez… I am not getting this right!

That was copied from Scotticher’s response. She is taking care of the contributions for Polycarp. Sorry for capturing all this bandwidth.

Poly,

I wanted to throw out a job suggestion for you. It’s not full time, but it would bring in some cash until such time as you can find full time employment, and you could even keep doing it for awhile after finding a regular 9-5 if you wanted to, since most of the shifts are evenings and weekends, and you are allowed to choose which times you will work. It’s with a company called RGIS Inventory Specialists. A few years back when my husband went back to school, I worked for them in addition to my regular full-time job and it brought in some welcome extra cash. RGIS does inventories for retail stores and they always need people. I know they are hiring right now, because I saw an ad in the Durham paper for them on Sunday, and I bet they’ll be hiring again in the next couple of months. All you need to be able to do is count, pretty much. They train you on how to use their inventory computer, which is about twice the size of a PDA – you wear it attached to a belt around your waist. Currently they are paying $8/hour to start, and when I worked for them, they even paid us for coming in for training. I don’t know if the RGIS in the Raleigh/Durham area has medical benefits, but when I worked for them in Virginia you could sign up for medical coverage through them, which was a pretty nice benefit to get out of a part time job if you need it.

If you are interested in hearing more about what the job entails, email me and I can tell you more about it. I suggest it because it was easy to get hired by them, they always had work for me, it’s more than minimum wage, and it’s something you can do that won’t interfere with finding or working a day job (though they do have day shifts available if you want to work them). If you work for them for 6 months you get an opportunity for a wage increase, as well, if you come in for additional training.

This morning’s total is $2255.00…again, PayPal only.

I was wondering…I know that someone near Poly is going to provide him with a 13" monitor, and that will be sufficient, but if someone has a larger one that works and that they wanted to donate, wouldn’t it still be nice to send it to him? If anyone has such a thing and the will to give it to him, please either post here or email me.

Thanks.

And again…I THINK I am caught up, so if you wanted to hear from me about EITHER of the people in need, and you didn’t, Please email me again!!!

Scotticher, I have a 17" monitor sitting around that I’d be happy to donate. I just checked it, and it works fine.

Tris, I won’t be back up in Maryland until Friday night, so first let’s see what happens with the van Jkayla was looking at. But if that possibility doesn’t go anywhere, then maybe you can stop by this weekend, drive the Honda a bit, and decide if you feel like trusting it all the way to NC.

Hey Aenea, just letting you know that I sent out the two drives (cd and dvd). I tried to find the coin, but couldn’t. If I send you a check can you get it to Poly, or would you prefer me sending it to the paypal fund?

waves Hi Polycarp, whenever you get a chance to read this! I feel special, you asked about me! Well, now you know the whole “CJ was the crazy sunday school teacher” story. From what I’ve read in your posts, you’re a super, nice, intelligent person, and I’m glad things are turning out all right!

Meatros,

I have Poly’s address and can easily forward whatever you send, or I could just drive it up there, either way no big worries.

Thank you!

Poly’s situation has galvanized this long-time lurker into registering. Imagine that. Now I’m off to PayPal…

Welcome aboard…Love the username.

My good wishes go off to Poly and his family.

RTF,

OK, I am free the entire first week of 03. We should have some sort of idea what is needed by then. If we need to go, what the heck, we ought to fill that sucker up with stuff to small to mail that would be useful to the cause.

Folks, let’s face some facts, if Polycarp’s economic situation includes a year off work, and loosing his car to repo guys, I have some blunt questions, that I think need looking at. What are you folks eating? Rent? Is the house yours? Are you fixing to loose it? Just how grim are things? Medicine? I can’t recommend that we try to solve all the problems, but food, winter clothes, and such are still within reach. We got churches, we got stuff, and we got way more than enough love. Let’s do this right. So, if I go wandering off into the wilderness of southern Virginia, and North Carolina, I think I ought to load that venerable Honda up like Santa’s Sleigh.

I don’t want to embarrass Poly, or intrude on his sense of self. But I don’t want them eating dog food, and skipping their medications, either. Yeah, I might be alarmist, but I kinda want to know.

So, I asked on PP about well recommended Honda mechanics in the area. I repeat that question here, in case anyone other than jkayla has contacts, auto mechanic wise. We shall see what works out to be the best solution, car wise. I don’t think two cars is a good plan for someone getting back on their feet economically, even if they both come free, initially.

Tris

According to our local news channel, radar is putting Santa right about North Caroloina about now, so maybe he will stop by and see Polycarp
