“You’re killin’ me, smalls!”
Yup, things were slow yesterday, and are even slower today.
I am now at the point of copying all of my posts before posting them, in case they are lost in the 502 error, so I can just paste them once the screen does clear up rather than retyping it.
I’ve been keeping my mouth shut, but I can’t take it any more: I’m getting maybe 2 minutes every single time I sign in then beachballs, spinning circles in the tab and then time out errors. I’m about done.
There was a time back in the naughties, but well after the winter of lost content, when they upgraded the VBulletin software version. It was worse than this, much worse. And it took a looong time to get the site functional again.
Good to know.
Why isn’t anyone giving us an update? Hello? Somebody? Taps laptop This thing on?
Two months is a very long time for a site to be this slow. It’s extremely frustrating. I know my membership money doesn’t cover much. It’s a bargain, really, until I consider how much time I spend waiting, waiting, waiting. Marriages have ended in less time than it takes to open a thread. Cobwebs form. I’m tempted to change my username to Timeout 504.
Why won’t anyone tell us specifically what the problem is and how long it’ll take to get the site back to normal?
The Dope disappeared from my Tapatalk app and I can’t seem to add it back. Anyone else having this issue?
Now the SDMB icon is back in my app, but when I select it I get endless “Loading”.
After a period of mostly-not-too-awful response, over the last few days it’s become worse and worse. Lot of 50xs this morning.
Just plain hideous today.
Curious if this site is genuinely being fucked with…
or
what
It’s difficult to use the SDMB at all today. Nothing loads. Every post I have to edit (every single one) has hung and then given me a 50x error, even tho it actually took the changes.
The SILENCE is the unbearable part.
Yesterday and today. Lots of 50x errors, other times very slow loading. Opening a new forum usually works but clicking the little check mark to get to the end of an existing thread spawns most of the errors. That might be a clue to someone savvy.
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but with a whimper.
^ Baby, can you dig your man?
He’s a righteous man.
What’s tough is that while it seems many people notice the 50x errors … there is no obvious commonality to everyone’s experience with them.
I am satisfied that it’s absolutely nothing on the users’ side. Nothing about device, operating system, browser type, browser version, etc. makes a difference.
Neither does time of day seem to make a difference. Errors are reported morning, noon, and night, around the clock.
I’m not even really convinced that user action is meaningful. Reports of errors upon editing posts are common, but I’ve also seen people in this thread seeing 50X errors when logging on/staying logged on, opening fora, opening posts (various ways), and posting itself.
Everything points straight to the server side of the transaction. The underlying database itself could be corrupted in some way. It could be as simple as a set of records in a given table being corrupted or missing. It could likewise be as big a PITA as physical damage to the drives upon which the SDMB data resides.
I don’t know enough to say whether it’s likely to be a software issue, which is something addressed by calls to upgrade or change the board software. If it were a software issue, I would be at a loss to explain the intermittent nature of the 50x errors. But who knows?
…
As far as silence from TPTB: I don’t think anything insidious is going on. I do think that this board is way, way down on the list of priorities for Sun-Times Media … especially being that the board still generally works over 90% of the time (percentage of user-actions failed by 50x error divided by user-actions initiated). The user-action success rate might even be over 99% … it wouldn’t surprise me that a fail rate of 1 in 200, say, would make the board seem ridiculously buggy.
Anyway … it’s also clear that there is no one among the familiar old-line SDMB admins/moderators that can truly serve as a knowledgeable liaison between any technical staff/contractors and the board membership at large. That could be because the technical side of the board workings are not really understood by any of our admins/moderators. That could also be because there’s really no one with the clear, front-burner responsibility of getting the board back to normal and thus no info is forthcoming even TO the admins/moderators. Or it could be a mix of both. I write this not to impugn anyone on staff, but simply to manage the house’s expectations.
…
I remember in the distant past a technical person named “Jerry” being frequently referenced. Am I remembering correctly that after several sales and transitions of the Reader, that Jerry is no longer around?
Getting a lot of 50Xs as well.
It’s being unable to even get into this thread to report problems (this was my third attempt) that makes the board seem ridiculously buggy
