The Chargers beat KC sunday in a close game 41-38, like back in the old AFL days games of old, making KC 9-2 and Denver lost a close game making them 9-2 last night. Denver and KC play again this coming sunday December 1st with one of them coming out of the game 9-3. Both KC and Denver have to play San Diego one more time each.
Now if you do the math the Chargers can’t win their own AFC west division, but they can qualify for the wild card slot beating out the Jets, Miami, Tenn all tied at 5-6 if they in turn lose one more game and the Chargers win the rest of their games they would wind up being 10-6 with the others being 9-7, with me so far?
I sincerely believe that the San Diego Chargers could go all the way to the Super Bowl, please note that I have been wrong before, but this is the season, this is the year, this is best case scenario yet.
On top of that they could wind up playing the New Orleans Saints in the Super Bowl being played in New Jersey February 2014 and as you well know Kenny Breeze was the quarterback for the Chargers for a number of years and Phillip Rivers replaced him at quarterback.
This is not fantasy football … I really think they have chance
Here’s their remaining schedule of which they have to win them all and of course KC or Denver would be the other wild card team in the AFC playoffs.
December 1st 1:15 pm pst CBS
Bengals at Chargers
December 8th 1:15 pm pst Fox
NY Giants at Chargers
December 12th Thursday night game NFL network
Chargers at Denver Broncos
December 22nd 1:15 pm pst CBS
Oakland Raiders at Chargers
December 29th 1:15 pm pst CBS
KC Chief at Chargers
It’s certainly possible - every AFC team has shown some weakness. But that’s a tough remaining schedule. The Giants are on a bit of a roll, the Bengals are winning their division, they have to play at Mile High on a short rest week, and finish off against the Chiefs again, who may possibly still be battling for the division, or maybe even a bye. 4 home games certainly helps - but then they’ll be on the road throughout the playoffs.
It’s certainly worth a $10 bet at Vegas, currently at 150:1.
The Chargers are as good as any of the other 5-6 AFC teams, but they really screwed themselves with a few bad losses. They have some tough games remaining, so 9-7 would be a good result. I wouldn’t predict better than 8-8 for any of the other teams, but one of them probably will, and I think the Chargers lose all the tiebreakers.
Well I’m about as optimistic a Chargers fan as you’ll ever find, but I don’t think I’ll be putting any cash on a Super Bowl run this year - though I do think they have a shot at the playoffs, even with a loss at Denver. The offense is certainly good enough, but the defense just doesn’t seem to have the pieces right now. In the aftermath of yesterday’s win, the talk was all about KC losing Houston and Hali - well the Chargers played without their top FOUR outside linebackers, and only Johnson (and just maybe Ingram after his ACL tear earlier this year) are coming back any time soon. Oh, and the cornerbacks are awful, which doesn’t help.
Next year, with Ingram and Freeney back, maybe a new cornerback or three, and our 2 starting wide receivers back (yep, lost both of them for the season too), I’ll like our chances a lot better.
Did you forget about how the Eagles can help out? The last four opening home games at the Linc against the Eagles were the last four SB winners. (Ravens, Giants, Saints, Packers).
Guess who played the Eagles in the Philly home opener this year??
So if odd statistics continue, the Bolts will win!
(I actually bet $10 on them to win for the hell of it.)
Good excuses, but it’s too early to talk next year. If Denver and KC can win their first nine games … San Diego can win it’s last nine games including the Super Bowl.
Remember when San Diego was 8 and 8 a couple of years back and they had to win their last four games to do that? They went to the playoffs that year.
They could if they were as good as Denver and Kansas City and had some help from the schedule. They aren’t, and they don’t/won’t if they make the playoffs.
Go Chargers they beat KC and they beat Denver tonight in a great victory 27-20 …
They will go all the way … Oakland in San Diego next week and KC for their last game at home in San Diego … of course they need a little help from New England to beat Miami Saturday and they need Baltimore to lose a game, but that’s football, right?
Just a note about Baltimore – the Ravens close out with three straight current division leaders, two of them on the road. They’re looking like 8-8 at best so there’s the target to beat for the Bolts and Fins.
If it actually happened, this would be frustratingly sad, considering that San Diego provided one of the three meager wins in my Redskins’ abysmal 3-10 record. We beat them, they go on to the Super Bowl? Could the universe be that cruel?
You think a hothouse flower team like the Bolts can win the AFC title game in January in Foxboro, do you?
There’s a lot of wailing and garment-rending in NE about losing Gronk. But the Pats won more easily without him, earlier this year, than in the last few games with him. They’ll be fine - and now that Denver lost again, they only have to win out to get the #1 seed.
So the normal Chargers-style finish would be to beat the Chiefs and then lose to the Raiders, and miss the playoffs on tiebreakers. Let’s see how it goes.
As far as the actual playoffs, the AFC seems pretty wide open. I wouldn’t be too surprised with anybody beating anybody else.
Stan Humphries, Natrone Means, and Ronnie Harmon will lead the Chargers to the Super Bowl. Oops, I meant, Dan Fouts, John Jefferson, and Rolf Benirschke will lead the Chargers to the Super Bowl. Oops, I meant, you’re not going to the Super Bowl this year. Recognize and Deal dude.
Ok, so let’s make a bet: My 10,000 dollars against your 100 that Houston doesn’t make the playoffs. 100-1, those are some great odds for you, yes?*
