I took my father to the hospital last Thursday for an outpatient appointment.
I was amazed by the number of hospital staffers who weren’t using masks. I say “using” because the unmasked people were wearing them, to be sure, usually on their chins. I suppose that’s so if a supervisor comes around they can pull them up.
This is in New York City. NYC was the epicenter of the COVID pandemic in the US last year. It was terrifying.
And this is in a hospital that a couple of weeks ago kept my father in the ER for days because they didn’t have any empty beds due to the current surge.
I don’t know if this hospital requires staffers to be vaccinated.
No, we largely agree that expressing our frustration in this way in this forum is entirely appropriate.
But I’m sure we’re all also greatly enjoying the “Oh deary me, why are you all being so mean about these poor people who are in no way responsible for their words or actions?” storytelling you’ve been providing.
And thank you for conceding that you ascribe no responsibility to these people for their words and actions, even as they continue to cause the deaths of thousands.
Maybe I’m a “retarded shithead” myself, but it has always seemed to me that there was some daylight between ascribing “no responsibility” to someone, and it being just OK to call them slurs.
I don’t know what your point is. I strongly suspect you don’t either.
But you’ve already said you think it’s appropriate to call people “retarded shitheads” when they act stupidly, so we’ve reached the conclusion either way.
“Retarded” as a slur in 2021 is gross and anyone who uses it should be ashamed of themselves. @Frodo, why did you quote a different phrase than the one that was actually used?
That said, @Jimmy_Chitwood, for what it’s worth, it’s not totally clear to this reader what you’re actually arguing in this thread overall.
You are right, I didn’t notice that.
I was wrong then, the shitheads part is ok, but “retarded” is wrong, I have to concede a point to @Jimmy_Chitwood.
That said, I think he’s wrong on continuing to harp against people venting on the Pit against stupid people doing stupid things, if we can’t do that why have the forum in the first place? but we shoud refrain from using slurs.
A [Yougov poll ] looked at a number of different scenarios and ask people who don’t plan to get vaccinated whether that would change their minds,
All were very low among Trump voters “Religious leader urged you to get vaccinated” (2%) “Trump urged you to get vaccinated” (4%) “Required by employer to get vaccinated” (5%) “Someone close to you contracted Covid” (3%) etc.
The only scenarios that broke 5% changing their mind was. “Full FDA approval” (8%) “Vaccine could protect my family from Covid” (9%)
There ain’t nothing that is going to convince these guys.
Putting emotional pressure on people actually can work, but I would agree that it probably doesn’t work in isolation. I think the recent surge in vaccinations proves something I’ve said here for a while, which is that visible consequences work. Shaming by itself without any obvious consequences for not getting the vaccine probably doesn’t work but it probably works better when people hear about someone they know going to their grave.
I suggest you go and give those anti-vaxxers a big hug and a wet kiss. I’m sure that they’re just misunderstood, and in no way are fucking idiots who are spreading disease and infecting others. They just need some kind words.
