Shows you really miss

Add video, trailers, etc. if you wish.

Herman’s Head.

Northern Exposure.

I was just thinking about Herman’s Head the other day.

Thanks to the rona times I recently binged all of 3rd Rock From the Sun again. In that era of comedy when everything had to be dripping with irony and cynicism it was so refreshing to find a show that was completely unashamed to just be silly and ridiculous.

Pushing Daisies, a real breath of fresh air.

World Rally. Disappeared from U.S. coverage. Best racing series out there.

Pushing Daisies, for certain. A brilliant show, cut short by a writer’s strike, then being unable to regain its audience when it finally got back on the air.

Obligatory “Firefly” recommendation:

Thanks to Amazon Prime, I watched it all last year. It still “works,” doesn’t it? It’s not as dated as you’d think it would be.

I sorely miss Law & Order: TOS.

Okay, let’s really show our age here.

The Red Skelton Hour.

Pushing Daisies

Hannibal

The Exorcist

Zoo. It turned into this show that just completely went with the insaneness and it was great

Galavant

That HBO sitcom from the 90s.

It’s main protagonist was always thinking in terms of old black and white TV shows and movies.

The cutaway scenes of him thinking we’re just old clips of classic black and white movies and TV shows.

Can’t remember the name of it though.

I also second Herman’s head.

Would that be Dream on?

TCMF-2L

  • Better Off Ted - cut off in its prime
  • Rubicon - One season that set up a really interesting story in an intriguing style
  • Time Team - It went a bit off the rails at the end, and everyone is too old to come back and do it justice, but I still miss it
  • Community - It ended on a high after a bumpy left turn, but I wish it had continued ever on
  • 19-2 - A very intense and compelling procedural from Canada
  • Broadchurch - The third series captured a great dynamic between Tennant and Colman at last, that I wanted to see so much more of

Yes! And Sid Caesar’s Your Show of Shows.

Dead Like Me had a great first season.

And Head of the Class.

That’s it. Thank you.

Anybody remember The Paper Chase? Cancelled after only one season, but they went on to film three more for pay TV. Watching them is something I’ve put on my bucket list.

The original Perry Mason was on AMI a few years back, with described video for the visually impared. My daughter (16 at the time) and I watched almost every episode together. I’d love to see them again.

I watched Dream On when I was living full-time in Moscow (now about 20 years ago). The Russian title was Kak v kino (Like in the Movies). It was on late at night, with a Russian voice-over.

The first time I turned it on, Benben was engaged in horizontal activities with a naked woman, to the tune of the 1812 Overture. They could get away with such things back then; I don’t know about today. (I haven’t watched Russian TV in years.)

This was a terrific show, and I was always surprised that it only lasted a year (disclosure: I had no idea there were three more seasons for pay-TV out there!). When I was still working, I sometimes had to write extremely long, detailed reports, and occasionally I would mutter to myself “don’t turn this into Bell’s outline of property“.

Men Into Space – I barely have memories of this show, but I do recall it being a “hard” science fiction show about a fictionalized US Space Program. It all took place within the solar system and involved no fantastic concepts (teleportation, FTL travel, aliens) – all just people rocketing into orbit and to the moon and the like. (Kinda like The Expanse, in a way.)

The show has never, to my knowledge, been syndicated, and have only recently been made available on DVD by obscure companies. Even when I tried to find information on it in books devoted to science fiction on TV I could find virtually nothing. It’s only since the internet came around that information on the show became available and even episodes have been posted.

Although I can watch re-runs on TV or DVD, I still do miss the original Dick van Dyke Show and The Prisoner, and would love to see something similar to each.

I’d also love to see something like James Burke’s shows. We got a copy of the complete The Day the Universe Changed from some friends, and I’ve at long last located (and watched) Connections, Connections2, and Connections3, but I’d love to see more.

I am resigned to the fact that Taboo will never have a second season. They got cancelled so I will miss Rick & Morty when this upcoming season warps up.

For my kids though, I wish there was something like Mr. Wizard, Bill Nye The Science Guy or it’s gutter twin Beakman’s World for this generation. Also Where in the World is Carmen Sandiago for the same reason.
