I’m taking it very slow, bit by bit. The script is easily readable, but remembering which vowel combination I’m looking at is turning out to be a tad more difficult. New words just throw me, and I have to spent a lot of time digging through the dictionary I have. But thoroughly enjoying it just the same.
Just thought I’d add, for folks thinking of heading to the Origins RPG convention, that yours-truly will be putting in his usual annual appearance there, as noted in this thread.
Aren’t Arabic dictionaries awful? I couldn’t find words to save my life, and I understand the root system very well, since it’s also used in Hebrew, a language I speak infinitely better than Arabic. It can’t possibly be necessary to arrange the dictionary like that, since Hebrew dictionaries list individual words.
Well, if you were a guy you would be perfect for me. But if you just want a girl to talk to or whatever. Hi!
I have a smaller version of the Oxford English-Arabic dictionary, so I haven’t had to tangle with the reverse just yet. Once I get through the book I’ve got now, and decide which dialect I want to pursue, I’ll probably cough up the dough for a nice Arabic-English dictionary and open myself up to the headaches.
Okedoke.
SWM, 26, 5’7", 170ish lbs, near Philadelphia (pic of bad haircut). Non-smoker, social drinker. My favorite writers are Douglas Adams, Scott Adams, & Isaac Asimov. I’ve played in various RPGs and tabletop games for 10+ years. I like to sample all of the computer gaming genres, with my favorites being the RPGs and strategy games. I’m an avid watcher of the Discovery, History, TLC, Comedy Central, and the Bravo channels. I like good movies and well as the bad (ever hear of Ax’ Em, Monsturd, or Plan 9?) Currently, I work as a Web Designer & Marketing Admin building web pages, brochures, and the occasional spreadsheet. That about covers the geeky points.
For the regular, boring traits, I enjoy boating, surrealism, car modding (Mustangs specifically), sushi eating (except uni, blech), and aquatic animals (I keep saltwater fish). I enjoy the finer things in life like sculpting belly button lint and giving wet willies. My skills include playing guitar, bass, and sax, juggling, playing golf, pool, and bowling. I’m left-handed, which can explain more things than you think. Can enjoy both the outdoors and the indoors, but rarely at the same time. I’m sarcastic, twisted, cheerful, slightly egotistical, stubborn, and in a word, weird. LJ link for a more personal look at my not-so exciting life.
And there’s me in a nutshell, which is exactly where a nut like me should be.
Frank #2, you are a cutie , but oh so far away.
Ayup. The look on your face in the bad haircut picture was priceless.
I think we scared him off.
Another latecomer…
Well I’m not a nerd, but apparently I must like them because the last two guys I have dated were nerdy Dopers!
So maybe the third time will be a charm!
I’m a beautiful, fun-loving 28-year-old SWF and live in the Washington DC area. See for yourself: me and me again (with my friend Brian).
So a big “how you doin’?” to all you single male DoperBabes!
Man, I go out of town for a weekend (to play in the Magic: The Gathering pro tour, as previously mentioned), and now there are a genuine excess of doper babes who must, if I am to live by my Code of Conduct, be hit on.
They include, but are not limited to:
saramamalana - I challenge you to a game of online Scrabble. (For the princess?) yes. (To the death?) yes.
draelin - I already hit on you many pages ago, but I’d like to renew my membership
luluBahrain - Now that you’ve written more than one sentence, I’m ready for some flirting… email me if you’re still interested
siege - you’re probably a little bit too old for me, but, just for the record, you ROCK. I’ve had a mini-dope-crush on you for ages. (Women who play Hearts… is there anything hotter?)
RainGrowsBrite - Why are you like this? (like what?) Like how you are?
Juniper200, Ava, so_da_ne, kyla, simply_cats, and just about every other women who has posted on this thread - You all rock.
First, the essentials: SWM, two weeks shy of 35, live in the SF Bay Area (though more East Bay-ish).
Nerd-wise, I’m more of a biology geek than a techno-geek. I do build and upgrade my own PCs, so I’m not completely tech-ignorant. I also work in I.T.
I still think dinosaurs are cool, I play video games, like sci-fi and horror movies, love RPGs, play Warhammer / Warhammer 40K (though I tend to collect and paint the figures more than actually play), play Magic: The Gathering (casually only, though), and so on. Standard geek stuff, I guess. My library consists of mostly non-fiction (the last three books I bought were about bird evolution…go figure), and I enjoy history, even if it’s more recent than 65 million years ago.
Music-wise, I listen to lots of things, though I’m not a big fan of rap or country music (though there are admittedly select songs that I like), and prefer more goth-y / darkwave / industrial stuff, though I’ve never actually been what anyone would consider a Goth.
I like animals (duh!) and have two cockatiels which I adopted from a local rescue agency.
Hey Darwin’s Finch!, we have a few things in common. First our screennames are birds…mine is the scientific name for the snowy owl! My old screenname was “birdgirl.” I love birds. Secondly, I was just at a goth club this weekend with OpalCat. However, I’m not a gothy type of person either in my day-to-day life. I only get gothed up when I go to the goth club.
Hmm, I have some nerdy qualifications too, but have been too lazy to post to this thread. Not ashamed, lazy. Okay, it’s a bit of both.
And to brag about my geek side in about the only forum where it is “socially” acceptable, and with numbered points even, to redouble and magnify the effect:
- I was the State of Louisiana Scholastic Chess Champion in 1991 when I was in 12th grade.
- I played quiz bowl in high school AND in college and have tried out for Jeopardy! 4 times.
- I spent a looong time in grad school in a science-y field instead of getting a real job.
- I play competitive Scrabble. Yep, I study lists of esoteric words for fun and amusement.
- Most of my personal travel is goal-oriented, not “relaxing on the beach for a week” type stuff. (This is actually way more geeky than it sounds, trust me.)
- I go to museums and art galleries by myself frequently, because I want to learn new things.
OK wow, last time I ever say anything about how glad I am the weekend is here.
Yes,yes, you should …um…behave yes…um, thats is… is it hot in here? hoo…
Ahem.
Where was I?
Well at least I can blame being un-coordinated and clumsy for any injuries. As for dancing, well, have you ever seen those videos of people getting hit with a stun gun? That sort of twitching convulsive thing they do? I make them look like Gregory Hines.
That’s some funny stuff. I can see how that might not fly too well at work though (So I should probably order 5 or 6).
Punished hmm…
Well, consenting adults and all.
Seriously, I am the same way with my boss, but it mostly takes the form of “how much can I surf the dope and still get my work done”.
If only I had a wheelbarrow, that would be something. (That seems really, really appropriate this week)
I see I neglected this thread for too long! Welcome Darwin’s Finch and ataraxy22! Nice to meet you!
Not a chance.
My brain’s currently in sleepy mode so until I think of a wittier response… how you doin?
Wow, all these good lookin single male geeks… is it a little warm in here?
It’s almost like I have been through the tornado and woken up on the other side of the rainbow in Nerdkin Land.
[SING]We represent the Comicbook Crew, the Comicbook Crew, the Comicbook Crew…
And in the name of the Comicbook Crew, we welcome you to Nerdkin land.[/SING]
Hey there, Gamera.
Y’know, you and beergeek and I should all get together sometime since we all live relatively close.*
