When the sleet turned to snow, I decided to head to the office. But about 4 or 5 miles down the road, it seemed a fool’s errand, so I made a quick stop at Food Lion for fixin’s for veggie-beef soup, then turned around to come home. The last couple of miles on the main drag, I was behind a plow. But when I turned into my neighborhood, it all went bad.
We live on a corner. The approach to the corner is uphill, and it turns into our street still going uphill. I skidded and started spinning wheels. So I thought, let’s back up along the straightaway and get going enough to reach our driveway (which also goes up for a short bit.) Well, I backed and spun wheels and backed and spun wheels and finally managed to back on to the shoulder, hoping to get some traction there. Nope. So my car is sitting partly on the shoulder, partly in the street (but plenty of room for traffic, such as it is) in front of the house across the intersection. I’m bad guessing distances, but I’d guess something between 200-300 feet downhill from our driveway.
I gathered our groceries and hiked up the hill to the house, wheezing like I was about to die. I called AAA, but since I wasn’t stuck in the middle of the road and since the neighborhood hasn’t been plowed, they couldn’t do anything - no one here uses chains. So I figure once the plow goes thru, I’ll go down and dig the car out and try to bring it home.
My husband went out and when I told him what happened to me, he came in the other entrance to our neighborhood and he got home just fine. Lesson learned. Meanwhile, I’ve shoveled the driveway, and big, fat flakes continue to fall. I hate snow.
I really have no idea why manson1972 wished this storm upon you. I just came in from the first round of shoveling, and I am reminded that there is a downside to snow. Of course, if it would snow more often, I’d just buy a damn snow blower…
Very, very rough estimate (taken by holding a fabric tape measure up to the pile on top of the mailbox) has us at 4.5 inches thus far, and still falling.
I think we’ve gotten about 6" so far here (I live about midway between Philly and Reading). STill snowing heavily. I love being able to telecommute, but I’d rather be napping.
It’s still snowing, but it’s about 35° and it’s all slushy on the road. I’ve cleared what was plowed across the end of our drive, and I’ve retrieved the car. I just had to clear about 10’ ahead of it and I was on pavement. It took about 10 minutes to brush all the snow off before bringing it into the garage, but now it’s all good. I haven’t had to shovel the drive any more - it’s pretty much melting when it hits.
Ugh, FairyChatMom! I’m glad you were able to get your car home!
It’s still snowing here in Falls Church/Tysons, though not as heavily as it was a little while ago. At 11am we had 2.5"; it might be up to 3" by now. Eventually I’ll need to go out there and do some shoveling, but I’m putting it off. At least all of today’s teleconferences and Skype meetings are finally done, so the afternoon should be fairly quiet.
The Firebug and I got out this morning, made three snowmen (rolling up big snowman-sized balls of snow was easy!), had a great snowball fight, came in, dried off, changed clothes, had lunch. Now I’m getting ready to nap.
Guesstimating about 4 inches, here in northern Calvert County.
My mom lives in Harford county - my sis sent a pic taken in Mom’s yard - just over 7" so far. They still have power, so that’s good.
It’s hard to tell how much has fallen here - the flakes are pretty wet and heavy and I think it’s just packing itself down. No matter - the driveway is still just wet and I don’t have to shovel. THAT is a good thing.
After my nap, I went outside, measured the snow with a ruler (6-7 inches), took some pix, went down into the woods, saw a fox. Been living here just shy of 20 years, heard from the get-go that there were foxes in the woods, this was the first time I actually saw one. Got a really good look, definitely a fox and not a dog. He was just trotting along, minding his own business, passing within maybe 30 feet of where I stood, in an area with lots of trees but hardly any underbrush.
Returned to the house after the fox finally ambled out of sight, shoveled the front steps and walk and around the car, had another snowball fight with the Firebug, came inside, got dry, taking it easy. Nice way to spend the first full day of spring.
Looks like we fell in the 5" area, which sounds about right. I had to shovel the drive a second time and there was definitely over 2" of additional accumulation. I’m figuring on going to work in the morning. I’ll take the longer route since it’s more likely to be salted and sanded.
I cleaned off the cars, since that didn’t bother my back. Our sons did the shoveling, and my wife salted the walk. I’m still terrified of steps that even look wet after this winter’s mishap. I’ll be hanging on to the railing for dear life.
We got about 11 inches, I think, and there’s something still falling from the sky. It might be itty bitty snowflakes, but since everything is starting to sparkle, I’m guessing freezing rain.
So that’s the deal for today. Which way we go depends on the local schools - they may do a 2-hour delay also, or they may be closed again. They’ve promised a decision by 8am.
I made it to the office with no muss or fuss. Temps were above freezing and the roads were clear and just wet. We’re promised plenteous sun, so I left my car windows open a bit - it’s damp inside from melted snow and I’m counting on sun warming my dark car enough to dry it out.
Meanwhile, my arms are suddenly aching from yesterday’s shoveling. Can this please be the end of it? Stoopit snow.
