So Who All Is Staying Here?

I’m staying.

:crickets: :sound of one hand clapping:

Yeah, that’s about what I thought.

I’m staying. I registered at one, and posted a couple of times, but there wasn’t much to hold my interest. Even if it picks up, I will probably post here more.

Umm…can someone fill me in? I’ve been away a little while…what’s the deal, and where exactly are the other boards?

I don’t think we’re allowed to link as it’s considered as advertising, but they’re called domebo and Giraffe Boards.

I’m not going anywhere, and I happen to like the new rules.

You’re kidding me, right? You actually believe that there will be less drama because a few people are posting at other boards? Oh, that’s rich.

Nah… The Man just stuck it to us.

Registered on Domebo and Giraffe, and finding myself quite active on Domebo. Still, I’ll be checking in at the SDMB. I hope I’ll be posting more again once the dust settles.

When I really really need to call somebody a cunt, I’ll sign up at another board to do it. Since my rage only burns with the energy of one 20 watt light bulb rather than a million suns, I think the SDMB can contain it.

what I meant, why is there talk of people migrating? What has gone on that I’ve missed?

I’ve visited the Pit maybe four times in the years I’ve been reading this board, so I’ll stay. I’m not really into cussing people out over politics or religion or whatever.

People have been told they can’t call one another cunts in the Pit, and have decided the Boards are doooooooomed!!!

I am here until I get bored or pissed off enough to leave, and that hasn’t happened in the last 10 years. I don’t give a good goddam about the brouhaha du jour and I guess I’ll see if I miss those who leave or not.

I wish everyone the best whether they choose to stay or go, but I can’t pretend I care about new rules or new boards when I don’t.

Ed Zotti has involved himself more in the day-to-day operation of the Boards, including modding in the Pit. He rather ham-handedly created new rules for the Pit – rules which some objected to as censorship, and others as unclear. Blah blah blah, several hundred active Dopers have moved to one of the new boards. See ATMB for more, if you can stand to read page after page of invective.

What, seriously?

If you honestly think that’s the reason, then you’re not nearly as bright as I’ve given you credit for.

If when I find no interesting conversations, if when discussions here do not incite me to go and look some stuff up, if when this place is no longer a fun time to spend a little time, then I’ll consider doing something else. Maybe another board (I’ve lurked, and so far nothing I’d care to return to too often), maybe I’ll actually read a bit more. I don’t know. It really is just a message board.

One thing I do fear … a good message board needs the right number of people. Not so many that you do not know who is who and enough that good conversations are maintained. Too much snark all over kills it and is the problem most everywhere else I have seen anyway. SDMB had the critical mass but was not too massive. The option of the Pit kept snark down elsewhere. I highly doubt any of these new boards will get the mass or keep the balance sufficient to achieve what SDMB did but I have no doubt that if many of them leave for good that the SDMB will hit my if thens before long. A shame for us all. But in the end not that big of a deal.

As to the what happened. Yeah, Ed heavy handedly tried to impose some new rules that were perhaps somewhat inconsequential (I certainly felt so) but were indeed stupid. Very stupid. Tried to fix something that really wasn’t broken and breaking it iin the process. And while flippant may be a great persona to project it instead felt to many like their concerns were getting flipped off. People felt dissed, feel dissed, and that is hard to undo.

Still here, obviously. I’ve joined a splinter board in case this one gets its plug pulled, but that seems unlikely.

I’m staying. I didn’t hang out in the Pit 99% of the time, so the new rules don’t bother me. But I do find them stupid and think they will likely drive down the quality of the board in the long run by ruining an outlet, so I am going to argue for getting them repealed even though they don’t directly affect me.

I’m staying. Just discovered there’s been a debate! I don’t say a huge amount but I read a lot. I haven’t read the Pit for years because of the language. I figure excessive bad language is a sign of paucity of argument. So I’ll probably read more with the new rules.

Oh, ouch. If you’re going to insult me, take me to the Pit and I’d be happy to meet you there. Otherwise, you can take my posts to mean just what they say and if that affects your opinion of me, I guess we’ll both survive.
