Staying. I don’t think the freedom to call a fellow poster a “ct" in the Pit is enough of an inducement to go elsewhere, and I don’t think throwing a collective tantrum when told you can’t call a fellow poster a "ct” in the Pit from now on is a marker of intelligent and reasonable discourse.
I think that Ed et al. are wrestling with the unwieldy prospect of making this place pay its bills, and the attitude of many posters that “the Dope has outgrown its connection to Cecil and you’re not the boss of us anymore” isn’t helping one little bit. Hopefully it will all blow over soon.
I’m staying. First of all, I really like this board. It’s the only one I’ve ever found that regularly has interesting questions and intelligent conversations.
I’ve posted at domebo and giraffe, and fathom in the past. Really have no interest in keeping up on 3-4 boards. Assume I’ll most likely end up here out of inertia if nothing else. As of now it looks like these boards are getting by far the most play, with Domebo running 2d and Giraffe a distant 3d.
Gotta admit the main effect of this brouhaha has been to lessen my interest in ALL of the boards.
I hate drama and avoid any thread that looks like it might contain it, so these new boards are a surprise to me. I haven’t been to them, but I might take a look.
To be honest, though, I haven’t noticed any dropoff in the activity here recently. How long ago did the new boards start?
I also don’t read the threads that are chatty, nor ones that are games, and I don’t have any interest in Science Fiction or Fantasy. Are the threads on the new boards full of this kind of stuff? I’ll take a look later tonight.
I have no intention to stop reading and posting here, although I’ll admit that it’s been much lighter than usual over the past week. Once all the set-up stuff is finished, though, I expect I’ll be back at my usual levels. (I keep a lot of tabs open at once, so it’s easy for me to just skim through several different forums and read whatever threads interest me. I like having more than one site to look through.)
I really hope that Ed is able to come to some sort of compromise of the rules and moderation here that most people can live with. I think it’s better for everybody if the SDMB survives and thrives, spin-off boards included.
I’m staying. I used to occasionally wander to the pit for my Recommended Daily Allowance of vitriol, but never stayed for the flame wars. I just read the OPs and maybe the first few replies-- that and mini-rants. Which I will miss. But it’s not like I can’t find angry ranting anywhere else on the internet…
Read ATMB for a clear explanation. Short version is that one of the administrators made up some new rules about The BBQ Pit and some people were a) upset about the rule and/or b) upset about the administration’s answers to their comments about the rule.
I feel I’m pointing out the obvious here, but registrations aren’t any kind of indication as to how many people actively post. I’m registered at Domebo but haven’t found it to be what I’m after, so while I’m adding to their registration numbers, I don’t think it really counts in any way.
By the same token, how many of the 82k Dopers actually* actively participate*? How many signed up and decided they didn’t like it?
Only time will tell whether this is just a little ripple of change or the start of a mass exodus, but regardless, quoting membership numbers doesn’t reveal anything other than that people were temporarily engaged.
I’m doing both. BTW, does anybody else think this whole SDMB “splintering” thing would make a good book in a year or two? I get the feeling that a bunch of people who post and moderate here have much more invested in SDMB than the rest of us.
As I’m sure everyone was waiting to find out ( ), I’m both staying and going. Since I’m now registered everywhere. Like someone else said, why wouldn’t we do that? And because we’ve survived something as tiresome as P2P, I figure we can make it through anything!!
