The victim of a savage racial assault that included raping the boy with a long plastic pipe has committed suicide.
Apparently he underwent a few dozen operations and lived with a colostomy bag. They really went to town on him. One guy got life, the other got 90 years. Now they get to sit and know they are responsible for the guy’s death.
Sick part is that this is likely a source of unending delight for these two pieces of shit. I’m sure their skinhead compatriots in prison will be congratulating them for years to come.
Not enough they broke his body, they also broke his brain. I never thought I’d write these words out, because the Death Penalty is something I’ve always fought, but 90 years is way too lenient for them.
I wonder if a case can be made that they are directly responsible for his suicide? Likely not. Even though it is obvious they are.
90 years IS life. The Death Penalty would’ve made skinhead martyrs out of 'em…not that they won’t already be that in jail. It may be an unending delight now, but 40 years from now it won’t be so funny, then he’ll only have 50 to go. Or we might just commute the sentence and he’ll walk in 7, such is the court system.
Yeah, I’ve been following this story, in part because the orginal assault occurred less than ten miles from where I currently live, and it’s pretty sad. Thing is, the assholes that committed it will most likely be spending the rest of their lives in prison, and I doubt they are all that happy about it. That’ll do for me.
Besides how fucked up the attack was, you know what thought occurred to me?

Y’see, for the next 30 years that these pieces of shit (POS’s) have to serve (though I think they’re so depraved that they should never be released from prison):
*David’s health will never improve; he’ll never lose that colostomy bag and return to a normal life–all the while being able to rejoice that these POS’s are still in prision;
*David will never graduate from college or get a job that he hates (or loves)–all the while being able to rejoice that these POS’s are still in prison;
*David will never fall in and out of love or discover all the joys of true friendship–all the while being able to rejoice that these POS’s are still in prison;
*David will never be able to just *live * every day–dash off to the store, lounge around the house, take a vacation, watch a sunset, or whatever those of us who are not in prison get to do just because we can–all the while being able to rejoice that these POS’s are still in prison.
Yeah, they’ve won. True, they’re in prison, and they won’t be able to do the things that David would’ve been able to do, but, still, they’ve won. Goddamn! :mad:

My personal take is that in an incedent where they deliberately cause damage that would have this type of effect [lose intestinal tract and add a colostomy bag, or lose limbs, or become paralized] why not just duplicate surgically the effect. Imagine those 2 scum having to exist for the rest of their lives with colostomy bags.
I would love to give them the death penalty, but as was pointed out it would make them martyrs.
Because it would be unethical for a qualified surgeon to do a medically unnecessary procedure without the patient’s consent.
Life in a max security prison will be suitable punishment, trust me. Their lives will be coned down, narrow, limited things, constrained by forces they are powerless against, as their physiology becomes institutionalized and they eat and excrete and sleep in accordance to when they are allowed/trained to.
If they are fortunate, they may be allowed to do some productive labor which will be of benefit to others. If not, their wheels will spin endlessly, as they try to find some reason or purpose for their continuing existence.
Perhaps they may truly repent, and if so, should be able to be of some positive benefit to others as their years and decades slowly pass by. If not, the years and decades will still pass for them, albeit even more slowly.
I’m sure QtM is right. There is a part of my opposition to capital punishment that is borne of some innate sort of “Thou shalt not kill” ideal (though I’m not at all religious), and another part that is borne of the “Holy shit! They’ve killed how many innocent men in whatever state since nineteen hundred and whatever?” practicality. But by far the main part remains that, well, death is too good for them. No, there is NOTHING (death or life in prison or anything else) that can make justice for the grieving family - so why try? Just lock them up forever in a rather nasty and unpleasant place. No hope of parole. No hope of life. No hope of anything. Imperfect, but the best option we have.
Surgically? Surgery implies precision. These men don’t deserve that. They ought to be sat down on a pool drain and eviscerated.
Either that or they should be beaten to within an inch of their lives. Then when they recover, they’re beaten again. Lather, rinse, repeat for the rest of their lives.
This is where the law is utterly useless (and through no fault of it’s own).
These guys cause a person to suicide through a racial attack. How can you really get closure on that? You can’t. Even torture followed by death won’t quite be enough.
Similarly, a truck driver in Australia last month drove his rig into the side of a train at a crossing. Eleven people died. It seems the truck driver was totally at fault. He should pay, obviously. I can’t imagine how the victim’s loved ones must feel. BUT… up until seconds before the accident, he was just a regular Joe earning a living. Now he faces a long time in jail.
I have no idea how to deal with this stuff.
These guys will find find themsleves with their own kind in prison. Their unfortunate (sorry) circumstances were that they were prone to instituionalization long before the tragic event. The white gangs in prison will take them in and make them right at home. Were prisons not a racially segregated evironment, these guys would be looking at 23 hours a day in a small room and 1 hour out a day for their own protection. In reality, they have commited the acts that get them into the warrior class of one of the ruling prison gangs up front and will be treated as elite by the prison population and the staff.
What is the proper action to take here? Sterilize their parents?
There’s no way the good guys can win on this one. We kill them, we degrade ourselves and martyr them. Even without taking their life, there’s nothing we can ethically do to them that could equal what they did.
But wouldn’t it be in some small way a good thing if in ten, twenty, whatever years time, these guys realized the full horror of what they did, and are as genuinely disgusted at their own actions as we are?
I’m just disgusted that, if it’s accurate, there’s any possibility for parole for either of them.
It could all be mitigated if this was a flashpoint crime, heat and anger of the moment and all that, but it took place over 5 hours.
Drug use or not, they should never get out.
And I wish there was some way to charge the other partygoers who might have known this continued to take place.
[hijack]I’m particularly affected by this because, last night about 4:00 or so in the morning, there was a ruckus in the hallway involving my female next door neighbor. A male was creating a lot of commotion in the hallway and her dog was barking a lot. I never heard her say anything. He left the building at one point and I knocked on her door but she never answered. I went inside when I heard him coming back in.
This morning, there was a note from him on the floor in front of my door apologizing for the ruckus. Apparently he saw me going back into my apartment when he returned. Sorry for the hijack, this thread just reminds me of violence and not being sure of how to help.[/hijack]
Actually, there’s no way, from the information we’re given, to know if getting rid of the colostomy bag was even possible. And while lots and lots of people have lived wonderful lives despite colostomy bags, let’s face it, they aren’t a wonderful thing to have to deal with every day of your life. In his case, it was probably a constant reminder of the rape.
And I wonder, given the time frame, if that wasn’t a factor in all this - not so much the colostomy bag itself but the dawning realization that yes, there is permanent damage and it really is forever. What can be dealt with over a couple weeks or months is perhaps not so easy for years on end. Likewise, he might have felt he would never stop hearing about the attack.
On top of that - was there any pressure for him to be the saintly survivor? All this talk about him rising above it and being happy and normal… you know, that’s NOT a normal reaction to getting ass-fucked by a giant pole to the point of needing reconstructive surgery. That is, in fact, less normal than being depressed and having crying episodes about it. Were there cultural factors leading him to hide his desperation? Avoid counseling? Was he teased (because people are unbelievably cruel)? Was there an unconcious rewarding of stiff-upper-lip behavior and a non-verbal but clear disapproval of him showing negative feelings here?
I don’t know. And there isn’t enough information here to know. But I do wonder.
It’s nice to think that these scumbags will be miserable in prison, but the reality of it is this- they will be taken in by their own kind in there and be protected and made kings.
