The whole thing started because Santorum openly stated that the government should be able to stop consenting adults - and this includes heterosexual married couples - from performing perfectly safe acts in the privacy of their own bedrooms, simply because he thinks those acts are icky. Someone like that needs to be stopped, and Savage used the only method he had at his disposal.
(As a side note - Savage didn’t even come up with the definition; some (straight) reader of his did.)
