Dunno if this is new, or goes back to the 1930’s – or to the 1030’s – but it is not uncommon, nowadays, to hear Bible Radio preachers deny that the Biblical God is the same as Islam’s Allah.
Creating Adam and Eve, sending the flood to Noah, talking to Abraham, talking to Moses – he sure sounds like the same guy. But the anti-Islam fervor has led to this strange new (?) revisionism.
ETA: it’s like asking of Downey’s Sherlock Holmes is “the same” as Rathbone’s Sherlock Holmes. Yes and no?
Yes, they are incredibly ignorant. I remember Jerry Falwell saying that Muhammad was a terrorist, while Moses was a man of peace, proving that he was ignorant of significant portions of the Pentateuch.
I guess he never read Thomas Jefferson’s autobiography, in which he explains that the Virgina Statute of Religious Freedom (a precursor to the First Amendment) “meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mahometan, the Hindoo, and infidel of every denomination.”
Just because the Internet is awesome, I have to add this link to Jefferson’s words in his own handwriting. It’s the last sentence on that page, and makes it pretty hard to argue that Jefferson wasn’t including Islam and Hindu when he referred to freedom of religion.
There is a Chick tract claiming that Muslims worship the “moon God” so it’s not a super new idea for fundamentalist Christians.
I talked to a friend of mine who is a youth pastor who claimed that the god of Islam couldn’t be the Christian God because…and it was so stupid and illogical I can’t even remember the reason. :smack:
[digression] Cyrus the Great, the devout Zoroastrian who restored Temple and Homeland to the Jews after their Captivity in Babylon, was selected as “Greatest National Leader ever” in a SDMB contest. Cyrus wrote his own laws of religious freedom *which are known to have been a major inspiration to Jefferson. *[/digression]
What does this have to do with stupid Republicans? To remind us of their brazen arrogance in claiming men like Jefferson, Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt — men who would vomit in disgust to see today’s “politics.”
Counting all the nutty offshoots of Yahweh as the same is an interesting tact. I mean, yeah, the same up until all the retcons and fan wanking! Kinda important, no? Otherwise they’d all be Jews.
In short: Meeting held to talk about Muslims in the US, republican protestors show up, claiming they care about “free speech” and how hate crimes oppress the poor, dear little christians.
They then fucking CHEER AND APPLAUD when one of the presenters mentions a mosque that was burned down by an arsonist.
Fucking monsters, every single fucking one of them. I guess christians and republicans think “Free speech” means “The right to murder others”.
I have to point out that I know many fundies (who are also Republicans) who essentially deny that Thomas Jefferson is a Founding Father, because they don’t like his political and/or religious philosophies.
That the Christian god is the God of Abraham - the god of the Jews - is pretty important. Otherwise Jesus could not have been the Messiah that fulfilled the prophecies.
Moslems, too - what fanwanking is there? The Q’uran itself says it’s the god of Abraham and that the people of the book have the correct and only god.
Michael Savage and former Congressman Allen West likens Senator Kirsten Gillibrand to the Khmer Rouge for trying to take military rape prosecutions out of the military chain of command.
The only good thing about this? Former Congressman Allen West. Hopefully a never-again-to-be-a Congressman Allen West
