Hey, now, let’s see if what Santorum is saying (about less marriage because of gay marriage) could make some internally consistent sense. We know that homophobia is pretty strong in the over-35 male demographic. If anything is associated with gays at all, it’s to be shunned, right? So marriage is now “tainted” by the fact that gays can marry.
So now the fear is that [del]a statistically significant minority[/del], well, any number, however small, of a new generation of straight men will begin to say, “Get married? Are you crazy? Do you think I’m gay!??”
This is silly, of course. It’s crazy on the level of refusing to live in a house because, "Queers do that."But for those who remember the era where gay men were seen as horrifying monsters and gayness a label assiduously to be avoided, understandable.

I think they are aware of their own mortality, and that they know already that it will be long gone before the worst effects are visible to all and not just the scientists.
