Does Mentalism work on a Hypnotised [in the traditional sense] person, under trance?
I can’t figure if the Hypno is a complete wipe, rendering any other control useless
OR
if Mentalism isn’t perhaps a few steps into Hypno, and that the rest of hypno comes in, full force, but with the head start that Mentalism gives them.
Then again, having some knowlege of Mentalism in the first place is devastating to the craft.
On one Derren Brown [What is an instance of the art called, certainly not an illusion]
Derren had the TV audience pick a person by their headshot against the background of a live action scene [I want to say a College Quad or Courtyard, some such like that.
8 headshot photos were shown, one at a time.
As he was doing so, one of the photoed subjects walked into frame for a while.
But
I caught a glimpse of him doing this. Not exactly knowing why, I made it a point not to chose his photo in the line up.
I did not “go along” with Derren’s … experiement.
Because
Derren re-played the video, and pointed out the fact that the ““correct”” answer walked out during the presentation. That our sub-conscious saw this, but not our conscious mind. The influence of that act was apparently, insurmountable in the face of a “free” choice.
I usually say I am doing a “demonstration” when I am performing, since “illusion” or “trick” implies that I am just fooling the person instead of using an actual mental ability. Of course I am just doing a magic trick with a different presentation, but the important part is making the audience feel that something impossible occurred. A mentalist generally has to look more straightforward and not appear to be doing anything, but at the core we are doing the same sleights and misdirection that you see from the stage magicians and the close-up artists.
I have not seen the Derren Brown effect that you mention(and I am not sure I understand it completely), but I would not be surprised if he did not have something unusual about all the subjects that could be pointed to after the fact as the reason they were chosen.
My favorite routine to perform is this one from Bob Cassidy.
The favorite of my high school students though is the Spoon Bending I learned from Osterlind though I don’t do it like in the linked video.
We may need to recalculate those stats going forward. I think the new software has a different formula for the tournament prizes. I would swear that when Missy went out (in fourth place) the message in the text window said she won X amount of chips. I think with the new software, if there are enough players in the game it awards prizes for more than just the top three.
Or there might be a way to reconfigure the software.
Or we could just ignore it and go on the same as always.
My “best” suggestion was: The Chilean Tea Party: Nowhere to go but up.
Yeah…yeah…Phil Helmuth wannabe…
For next quarter, 4th place finishes should be considered since the PM software awards so many chips for that finish, and maybe we should post the number of chips won next to their name in the results along with a cumulative standings…(whould it reflect the standings of our own ranking system? Hmmmm…)
