Survivor 3/17 - special night

Small nitpick. Sandra was on, and won, Survivor: Pearl Islands. The winner of Survivor: Marquesas was Vecepia.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.

Yes, and she let them keep some of the rice, too, since they’d lost some of it to mildew.

And I also agree with what Chastain86 wrote in her spoiler about next week.

While there is a Mrs. Chastain, it’s the Mister that does the postin’ here. :stuck_out_tongue:

 So sorry!
If it makes you feel any better, people always assume I’m a guy, but I’m actually of the female persuasion.

D’oh! :smack: Guess I don’t remember it right, then. Sorry. But this time around I do think she is completely useless - or at least, I don’t think she is making herself terrifically useful.

Well, many of the challenges so far have involved swimming. People with a lot of muscle mass and low body fat don’t make very good swimmers. They’re not very bouyant. That was a big problem for Osten too. (Well, that and his being a big pussy.)

I thought Osten just flat-out didn’t know how to swim. Wasn’t he hanging onto the raft when they had to swim to shore after being forced to jump ship in the first episode?

Yeah, because he’d have sunk like a rock otherwise. He’s too dense (in more ways than one  ). He seemed to have the basics of swimming down well enough, but it takes a lot more energy when you also have to work to not sink.

On the Early Show this morning, Ethan said that both he and Lex volunteered to do the archery because they both had success with challenges like it in the past, but when Jerry said she had ‘archery experience’ Shi-Ann and Kathy sided with her and so they let her do it.

He also questioned Lex’s motives and strategy in voting him off as a ‘business transaction’ but then telling him about it because he was his friend. He said if it really was all business then why bother telling him he was about to be voted off, and I have to agree. Which is it - are you taking outside friendships into the game or not?

I don’t have a real favorite yet this season. I’m waiting to see who comes out after a merge or mixing up the tribes. I agree that many are making mistakes again this season by letting their power show. If I had an alliance I would do everything I could to not let it be known, but go along with the ‘dominant male’ and how he wanted to vote until absolutely necessary.

I just had a thought while considering the dominant male phenomenon. Will there ever be a dominant female in a tribe, to the point that she openly calls the shots the way a young male always seems to in the beginning? Or will any female who attempts this be quickly labeled a bitch and voted off?

It seems that any women who come close to this have been the older, mothering types that in the beginning try to nag the tribe into working harder, or telling them what to do, and are quickly voted off with much eye-rolling in their direction. It’s interesting in a gender-study way.

Thinking of archery in Africa just made me laugh out loud, emembering how that gay guy (I forget his name) squealed when he almost shot himself with the flaming arrow! One of the all-time best Survivor moments.

Velma, regarding alpha females - the short-haired female lawyer kinda took charge early on in Amazon. Course, her tribe was all women at the time. And she got voted out pretty quick.

Yes, but speaking as a former swimmer (an open-water miler, no less) I can assure you: it takes a whole hell of a lot more energy to piss and moan and run screaming from a pelican like a sissy-la-la. Osten had problems.

I don’t see a conflict…I’m kicking you out cuz it’s business. I’m telling you now (as opposed to blindsiding you at TC) as a friend.

I definitely remember him (but not his name) – he won a date with Frank as a reward. My wife was sorely disappointed he wasn’t invited back as an All-Star.

Ahhh, Brandon Quinton.

One of the least-deserving contestants in Survivor history, sadly. However, how great would it have been if he’d been included, and formed a Gay Alliance with Rich Hatch?

“Will there ever be a dominant female in a tribe, to the point that she openly calls the shots the way a young male always seems to in the beginning?”

Well, the Jerri/Amber alliance took a shot at this in Season 2.

Hee hee. One of the best parts of Survivor: Pearl Islands was when Pete the Pelican flew in for a visit and starting walking around and Osten scrambled away from him like the sissy-girl that he is, and then started sharpening the machete, acting like Mr. Tough Guy. Then Ryan O. just rolled his eyes and calmly picked him up (Pete the Pelican, not Osten) and walked away with him, and set him down aways down the beach, telling him it wasn’t safe there with Osten the Pussy.

They took away Colby and Ethan … there is no more eye candy to be had… oh well, my vote is for Big Tom-he just makes me laugh!

Ethan was my favorite out of the people left. Having said that, I was glad to see him go. He looked like he was having a terrible experience, and so I saw his going as being put out of his misery, it was becoming painful to watch him.

I think Kathy is setting herself up nicely, she’s in with the girls at Mogo Mogo and has shown the most loyalty to Lex, without being beholden to him. She also has the repoor with Chapera, so I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with that. I think she has the smarts to wield power without flaunting it. Since I see Alicia as staying close to Amber and Rob in hopes that they’ll take her along, and now Rupert doing the same thing (he actually walked up to Rob and placed the freshly caught fish at Rob’s feet, rather than walking them into camp), I think someone like Kathy could help change the mentality of arse-kissing for acceptance into forming a powerful alliance without the need for kowtowing. I believe Tom is about as loyal to Rob as Rob is to him - read - not much, so I really do see Kathy as having a lot of room to maneuver in the long term.

Oh yeah, that was some fine televizzle, right there! Big bad Osten needs a machete to handle a friggin’ pelican. But yet in his post-boot chat, Osten said:

 Dude … you didn’t think you could the diseases by just touching them? Pussy.

I think it is part of Rupert’s strategy this time around. He was the head cheese the first time and was voted out right quick after the merge. He even said something at the beginning about playing it lower key. At one point in an interview Rob said something about this being his game, sounded like Rupert in the last one saying it was his island. Let Rob be the fool and think he’s the big man now, act like he’s in control, it will bite him in the ass.
