I look at Richard’s rubbing against Sue last week as more of a power thing than sexual. It reminded me of how our male cat would mount his sister, even though both of them had been fixed. It was to show that he was the dominant one.
Saying that, Richard’s act was still disgusting and he lost a lot of respect from me.
Being slightly obsessive-compulsive, I can understand how Replaying something like that incident in your mind, and reliving the sensation you felt could make you more upset. Especially at someplace like the island they’re on, where there isn’t anything to distract you from your thoughts.
I kind of liked Tom the first time around, but this game, between foolishly getting drunk on whiskey an episode or two ago and now his disgusting Sue dance, I think the guy is one of the biggest jerks in the history of the show. And please get rid of Rob soon. I also think it was pretty stupid to celebrate like they did, especially considering the reason Sue left.
I’ve always had more of a connection with the frst show contestants, excluding Jenna, and I was hoping for either Rudy, Richard or Sue to win. Now the only one left that I like is Rupert and so far, he’s not doing too well.
And I curse Osten for setting the precedent of contestants leaving.
I was distracted during the whole Sue build-up and then meltdown…can someone throw a few details my way about what exactly she said about why she was upset, and what the reason was that she felt she couldn’t go on with the game? From what I could see, when they first started showing her talking about the Rich incident in confessionals, she seemed pretty OK with it…calling Richard a jerk and all, but not doing the whole “I’ve been violated!” bit. The next thing I knew, she was sobbing all over the place…what happened there?
Also, I see a bunch of people saying that Kathy’s assessment was spot on…what did Kathy have to say about it?
I think any of the women in the show (or all of them as a Force) could have claimed sexual harrassment against Richard Hatch and the show’s producers for allowing him to prance about in the altogether. Richard Hatch used his nudity as an intimidation weapon and that’s the basis of any sexual harrassment suit. He was given an unfair advantage over all the women, not just Susan. This was a workplace, since all the participants in the Survivor show are in it for the money and workplace sexual harrassment rules should have applied. TPTB should have made Richard wear clothing. Period.
BTW, an interesting bit of speculation based on the “next week’s episode” teaser at the end of tonight’s episode…
For those of you who caught the teaser, a moment at the end seemed to indicate a “shocker” for the contestants. This shocker may or may not be the emergence of a “third tribe” made up of the booted contestants to this point, minus (of course) Jenna M. and Sue. What this means moving forward, I couldn’t say – will they be allowed to compete, or are they there for a different reason? We’ll see next week.
I would be absolutely stunned if anyone could make a sexual harassment charge based on Rich’s nudity alone, or at least if anyone could win such a case. Although it’s been edited to look like Rich was the only person who was ever naked out there, I’ve heard and read that a good many contestants, male and female, have been (famously, Heidi and Jenna from S6). Dealing with naked people, while distasteful, is an established and expected part of the game; I think you’d have as much luck suing for sexual harassment because people were standing around naked during the filming of a porn film. In fact, I’d be willing to bet small amounts of money that language in the contracts the players sign explicitly discusses nudity on the part of other players, and requires the would-be contestants to specifically state that they would not consider such nudity to be sexual harassment.
annie - I think you are stretching it quite a bit to consider Survivor - or any activity where individuals are vying for money or valuable prizes - a “workplace.”
I assume the contestants were able to validly waive liability for all but gross negligence OBO the show’s producers. And I cannot imagine an argument whereby the show’s actions constitute gross negligence.
I find it telling that the people closest to the action - the other contestants - both male and female - were doubtful of Sue’s motivations and the legitimacy/credibility of her performance. For Sue to dish it in the manner she did, and then to react in the extreme manner she did, suggests to me some emotional instability on her part.
It suggests to me that Sue figured out a better way to win a million dollars that does not require sleep deprivation, poor nourishment, physical demands, and mental toughness to get paid.
Let me just say that any respect I had left for Rupert is completely gone. He’s terrible at playing Survivor, that was obvious. But I just don’t understand his comments regarding Sue.
It doesn’t matter if she was faking being upset or it was genuine. Rob said it perfectly, with a matter as touchy and sensitive as that, you must give Sue the benefit of the doubt.
Tom - never had any respect for him, so I can’t lose any.
Shii-Ann - Shut up. Please. You are one of the worst Survivor players to ever play the game. You don’t know what you’re doing, you have no idea what’s going on around you, and even if you could formulate a plan, you’d wimp out when it came time to execute it. You and Kathy are toast.
Kathy - You’re an excellent player, have an excellent sense of the game and your surroundings. Please have the wherewithall to get rid of Shii-Ann at the soonest possible convenience.
Lex/Colby/Ethan - Why are you competing with each other? An alpha male is worthless in this game - they just get voted off by the females. Unless you have a solid intuition that all the challenges after the merge will be physical, you need to maintain a majority.
Jenna - you’re absolutely adorable. But you’re going to be torn to shreds soon.
The other female - holy crap is she hot!
I want to know what got edited out during the challenge/Sue’s rant. When they were deciding to either split the food or play the game, Jenna mentioned splitting the food to “heal wounds between teams” (or something to the effect). Later in camp, someone mentioned something about worrying if the other team was still upset with them. It seemed to me that everyone was very considerate of Sue’s feelings, and there weren’t any denials or such.
Not to defend wuusy-boy Osten in any way, but keep in mind that these contestants haven’t seen the Survivor show with Osten on it-- it was played and filmed before the Pearl Island episode was shown.
You need to get your PC-O-Meter adjusted. And if workplace rules apply here (which they don’t), it would the rules of Panama, not the US of A.
I think you can sue someone in the U.S. over events that took place in Panama, as long as plaintiff and defendant both live in the U.S.
I don’t understand the hostility toward Shii Ann, nor the perception that she’s a bad player. I didn’t see the Thailand season, but she seems to be playing carefully here and have a good grasp on the politics. I feel certain she’ll outlast Colby, at least.
(In Australia we haven’t seen the latest episode but I check RealityNews and peek at spoilers)
While UTR doesn’t make great television, it’s one of the smarter strategies, and I think that Shii-Ann of all people would be wary of playing her cards too early this time. The best strategy is the one that gets you to the final two with an opponent that you can beat.* Being outspoken, a provider, or a puppetmaster means nothing if it doesn’t take you to the end, and the UTRs know that if they lay low and play smart after the merge the showier players will eventually pick each other off. UTR is an especially smart move in All Stars because it’s clear that the biggest threats are being targeted - Tina (winner), Rudy (extremely likeable), Rob C (“the best player never to win”), and Hatch (winner, provider).
Not everyone can call the shots or else you get a case of “too many bosses and not enough indians”. Survivor is about reading the game, reading your tribe, and adjusting your gameplay accordingly. If UTR players tend to do better, then maybe the other players need to stop running around making such big targets of themselves all the time.
*Added for Colby. The dumbarse.

I have never found Lex ranting, or scary, in any way – I rooted for him in Africa, and I’m rooting for him here. I think he’s an extremely sharp player who seems to genuinely get along with most of the others.
I’m new to Survivor, so I have a question. Normally, when it comes down to the last two, the people voted off decide who wins, right? Will this include the two who voluntarily left, or are they out of play for good?
At any rate, the Dance o’ Joy was really stupid, even though I didn’t like her either. But her turn around from “it doesn’t matter” to “I was sexually assaulted” was really… I don’t know. I don’t like it. It feels cheap. She’s a strong, outspoken woman, and it just seems strange to me that when it happened she made nothing of it. To me, it is like she talked herself into the controversy, rather than actually feeling it in the first place. Not being there, I can’t see what she was like off-camera, so while I am in some ways inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt… it is still hard to swallow.
Munch, they were just worried if the other team would be upset with them for choosing to play. I taped it, and that’s what the concern spoken was, “Would they be mad that we choose to compete rather than share?”
The winner is decided by the “jury” voting. The jury is made up of the players who are voted off after the merge. (Usually the first player after the merge is not part of the jury, but the rest are.) At any rate, those who have quit so far would not have been part of the jury or affect the votes for the winner.
You must have missed the episode in Africa where he went completely psycho because the thought he was “betrayed”. He yelled and screamed like a madman at the rest of the tribe. He’s a complete control freak, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him flip out again.
erislover: The jury consists of only the last 7 people to be voted out, so none of the quitters in this case would be part of the jury.
Especially because he was completely wrong. For some reason, Lex was convinced that Kelly had voted against him (she had not) and never figured out that it was Theresa who had actually voted against him. His ranting and threats at Kelly caused her to break her alliance with Lex and attempt to form a new one to vote him off.
