That's it. Let's have a Comfort Party.

Hey, todd and Copper_moon

I think there’s a “widow’s walk” on the roof. I’ve got some flannel-lined sleeping bags to lay in the hammoks strung up up there. Next few nights are going to be clear and in the mid50s - perfect for watching stars, feeling the breeze off the ocean, listening to the surf, gently swaying and falling asleep without knowing it…

…and waking up just in time to watch the dawn come up the next morning.
[sub]One of the most amazing nights I’ve ever spent alone was just like this.[/sub]

ummm… knock knock…
can a stranger come in for a little bit?
I’ve brought a fresh warm sour cream pound cake, some Mayfield chocolate milk, and my crocheted chenille-prayer-shawl-in-the-making…

cjhoworth… I can massage your neck, I’m a little out of practice… but I was the family masseusse (sp? I’m a mathgeek… can’t spell!)

Lsura… we had that last week… although I think I’m getting it too… it figures. I took a two hour nap after I sent the little demons off to school. boy did I need it! I could use another… I need a pillow!!!
Lynne_kilii… if you share your brownies… you can have a massage too!

hey lurkmeister… anymore stew left? it’s about dinner time here… I could use some stew… definite comfort food… my mom was not a good cook, but there were a few things she made that I liked… that was my fav… my kids like it too! mmmmmmm

I definitely need this party… missed hubby’s call. haven’t talked to him since saturday and he only emailed me once since then… he’s been gone just over a week… I hate this! I want him home!!! ok… this isn’t a pity party… who wants to watch old musicals??? I will join you! they had Finnian’s Rainbow on last night. I love that movie! tried to find it on dvd… nope, not yet! :frowning:

The weather is finally nice so the kids are outside playing and will do their work when it gets dark. some peace and quiet time for me! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

hey, thanks to all for the warm welcome… forgot to add that to my message… the chocolate got me all flustered! mmmmmmmmm warm brownies and milk… who wants some more ice cold milk? I’m pourin!

Thank you, Tygr for the heads up on the sleeping bags…I’m looking forward to a night up on the roof with you and yours, Copper_moon, the Drifters and anyone else that wants to come along for some time under the stars. I’m practically vibrating like a tuning fork in anticipation of a gorgeous night sky.

CinnamonGrrrl, welcome aboard! You’d be welcome even without the sour cream pound cake, but you must have read my mind…that’s exactly what I’ve been wanting. Wanna join the rest of us on the roof tonight?

evilmthldy, welcome back! I’ve missed seeing you the past few days. It’s good to see you again. Count me in on the milk…would you like me to see if there’s some stew for you?

Thank you for the welcome… I’d love to be on the roof tonight with such a nice bunch of new friends. I’ll bring my guitar, if the weather is clear and dry (BIG if)…!

Welcome, CinnamonGrrl! I’ve got my knitting…let me see your shawl. How pretty! Crocheting scares the hell out of me…

Cabbage Patch Stew is brilliant, bodypoet, especially when it’s chilly or you’re in need of soul food. This is also a 1-pot wonder

Cabbage Patch
1 can kidney beans - drained and well rinsed
1 can tomatoes (give them a good squish up) or several fresh
1 large onion - sliced
3 celery stalks - chopped
3 cloves garlic (more or less to taste)
1# ground meat (chicken, beef or pork)
1 small head of green cabbage - shredded
2 cups (1 UK pint) vegetable stock

Brown the meat with the onions, celery, and half the garlic.
Add the tomatoes (with juice), kidney beans, rest of the garlic and vegetable stock.
Bring to the boil.
Add cabbage.
Add water if needed to cover ingredients.
Boil again then simmer for at least half an hour or until the smell drives you nuts and you gotta have some.

Serve with hot buttered torillas, marikli, naan, or scrummy flatbread of choice.

I’ll share my Crayons with ya CinnamonGrrrl if you’d like to colour with me. The puppy laying across my toes is quite friendly if you want to pet her

CinnamonGrrrl! Come on in! Everyone is welcome here, especially if they arrive with sour cream pound cake in tow. We gots all sorts of goodies: the kitchen is packed with food, the dining room is full of soap and candle crafty things (not to mention new micas to play with!), dogs and cats abound, and of course we have the stars and hammocks just above our heads. Perfect!

and ivylass! Have you just arrived…no, it looks like you’ve just been sitting there quietly, knitting away. I’m just going to sit here and admire you yarn-working types for a bit.

Anyone for a game of Monopoly?

Not to turn this into a drinking game or anything, but while I’m mixing drinks, here’s a terrific comedy of alcoholic dissuetude, “Withnail & I”. Can I fix anyone up with a martini (or a 'Collins – do you prefer the mix or just lemon & sugar?) while I’m getting myself one? There’s olives in the fridge. I hope you like your martinis dry. …Alternatively, chamomile tea is really very nice & soothing… here’s the cinammon!

…but we’d better have something to eat with that. I’m making a big omelette, with ham, scallions, salsa, American cheese, you name it…

…or for something sweet, there’s cheesecake, chocolate truffles, and doughnuts.

evilmthldy You can have all the brownies you want. Promise.
**plops down on the floor, brushes my hair out of the way, waits, and makes this face, in human form. **

I’m back, and more than a bit frazzled, having just found out that my cousin the journalist, who’s been posted in Kuwait City for the past couple of weeks, will be joining the troops on Friday.

Can anyone remember another nice, Jewish journalist, 40-ish, with a pregnant wife at home, who covered the U.S. “War on Terror”? Hint: he’s dead now.

I need a drink. Anyone care to join me in a pitcher of caipirinha? It’s a Brazilian thing involving limes, ice, sugar, and a hefty dollop of Brazilian sugarcane liquor. They pack quite a punch. After a couple, I’ll probably offer to swap backrubs. Any takers?

Eva Luna, if you’d like to bring them on up to the widow’s walk, that sounds like a good idea to me. evilmthldy, CinnamonGrrrl, welcome to the finest message board on the planet. evilmthldy, I think I’ll take you up on that neck rub, if you don’t mind joining me up on the widow’s walk. Besides, I think you’d approve of my latest knitting project - a Pi shawl (as the radius of a circle doubles, so does the circumference)! CinnamonGrrrl, I’m a reasonable mezzo-soprano, and I can harmonize, although getting neck rubs does tend to disable my speech centers. Friends have been known to joke about “finding the off switch.”

By the way, I’ve invited Polycarp to join us, and I hope he takes me up on the invitation.

Eva Luna, I’ll keep your cousin in my thoughts.

Boy those stars are pretty! Anyone got a star chart?
CJ

You get in first, and we’ll see if there’s room for me.

Ouch! Who threw that?

Sounds good to me, Eva (both the drink and the backrubs). After the last ten days I need a drink. Fortunately, things are starting to look up.

Washte, that sounds delicious. What are marikli and naan (I’m assuming some sort of bread?

:DeVena brushes the flour off her hands:

I’ve started a good batch of dough rising. We can make sopapillas tomorrow. (Big square mexican popovers that you serve hot so you can pinch off a corner and pour some honey inside) yummy yummy yummy!

Any leftover sopapillas we can stuff with shredded pork, green chiles, and tomatoes for lunch!!

CinnamonGrrrl, please do bring your guitar. A hootenanny on the roof sounds like a great way to go, and long overdue, it is.

I’ve taken a spare few minutes and gone into the den with my MiniDisc recorder to assemble a rough Comfort Party soundtrack, because I’m enjoying your suggestions scattered hither and yon among this thread. I’m noticing there’s always a humming tune in the background somewhere, and I want to catch them as they go by before it’s too late. (That’s me, the A/V geek, for you.)

(Incidentally, I’m wanting to do this in real life, so if anybody has any private suggestions in addition to what is or will be mentioned here, please e-mail me directly. Please also include, if you wish, a specific moment in which you’re thinking of the song…star-gazing, sitting around playing cards, cooking in the kitchen, whatever. I need your help, because this gumbo isn’t going to be any good without a little extra seasoning from y’all. I also don’t want to tie up the boards with more traffic by linking in CAFE SOCIETY for such a project of limited scope…so, if you could help…)

DeVena…mmm, sopapillas. You’re goin’ straight to heaven for that!

Oh, thank you! You helped me remember going to the drive-in with my family to see ‘My Fair Lady’ ages ago. We kids wore our pyjamas, and played on the swingset and slide and “manual merry-go-round” (our drive-in had these, in the space in front of the screen, where no one would want to park anyway).

Pyjamas? Because by the time we got home, all five of us kids were asleep, and our folks could just pack us into bed. Back then, kids had an earlier bedtime.

Oh, comfort party… did I already say I’d bring homemade macaroni and cheese?

Lurky, marikli is the Romani version of a tortilla (I’ll email you a recipe) and a naan is an Indian flatbread. You should be able to get some in town from an ethnic shop.

Also forgot to mention that Cabbage Patch has 2-3 TBS of chili powder. Sorry.

Homemade macaroni cheese? Oh yes please. To heck with the diet, bring it on darlin!

I also remember wearing pj’s to the drive-in as a kid so the folks could just pop us into bed.

Reminds me of the Crash Test Dummies song lyric… “some day I’ll wear pajamas in the day time…”

Eh, why not? Sounds good to me

:: shuffles back in ::

:: picks up teddy bear ::

:: wraps blanket tightly around ::

:: sits down in front of the fire & stares into it for a long time ::

Another one.

Wife’s cousin…

…the one I genuinely liked.

Single car auto accident last night.

. . .

[sub]Where’s those kleenexes…[/sub]

oh thank you for all the wonderful words of welcome…! I was not sure if this was one of those groups where you have to have been around a Long Time before people will even talk to you.

Did anyone see the stars last night, on the roof?
