Did they yank Ricky?
Is anyone else shocked that True Grit didn’t receive any nominations?
As I said earlier, the theory is that the HFPA didn’t get screeners and weren’t given screenings in time. They announced their nominations too early, long before True Grit was on many people’s radars.. It wasn’t, I’m convinced, a snub specifically targeted at the film.
BEST DIRECTOR
Darren Aronofsky - Black Swan
Winner: David Fincher - The Social Network
Tom Hooper - The King’s Speech
Christopher Nolan - Inception
David O. Russell - The Fighter
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE - MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Johnny Depp - Alice in Wonderland
Johnny Depp - The Tourist
Winner: Paul Giamatti - Barney’s Version
Jake Gyllenhaal - Love And Other Drugs
Kevin Spacey - Casino Jack
I have a free pass to see Barney’s Version on Tuesday. It looks pretty funny. I still wish Andy Garcia had been nominated for City Island here. They must not have been able to afford to campaign at all. I was thinking Spacey might win, he was great in Casino Jack!
I guess they did pull Ricky from the show, he’s been gone quite a while. I wonder which of his comments finally did him in?
Has a host ever been dropped mid-awards show before?
Wow, that is really surprising. I can’t believe they actually pulled him and now I want to know which comment got him sent off.
So much for that theory.
Or not. They always front load the host.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA
Halle Berry - Frankie and Alice
Nicole Kidman - Rabbit Hole
Jennifer Lawrence - Winter’s Bone
Winner: Natalie Portman - Black Swan
Michelle Williams - Blue Valentine
Natalie won, as I knew she would, and she deserves it, but it’s so amazingly wonderful to see the recognition of Jennifer Lawrence’s phenomenal performance, and Nicole Kidman’s phenomenal performance, and Michelle Williams’ phenomenal performance. I haven’t seen the Halle Berry movie yet, but it looks good.
There’s Ricky!
Watched The Kids Are All Right this afternoon. Thought it was meh.
Yeah, I didn’t care for it much myself, but it was by far the best of these nominees. City Island should be here instead of The Tourist, dammit! (I liked The Tourist, but it’s not much of a comedy)
BEST MOTION PICTURE - MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Alice in Wonderland
Burlesque
Winner: The Kids Are All Right
Red
The Tourist
Oh there he is. Much tamer than before.
And now the most *obvious *winner of the night, “The Kids are All Right” for Best Comedy/Musical.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA
Jesse Eisenberg - The Social Network
Winner: Colin Firth - The King’s Speech
James Franco - 127 Hours
Ryan Gosling - Blue Valentine
Mark Wahlberg - The Fighter
Good for Colin, and good for the HFPA for recognizing James Franco and Ryan Gosling!
I think the Top 4 acting winners will also be the Oscar winners: Colin Firth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale and Melissa Leo.
No surprises tonight, which is fine since I like all the winners. And nominees.
2010-11 GOLDEN GLOBE NOMINATIONS
BEST MOTION PICTURE - DRAMA
Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
The King’s Speech
Winner: The Social Network
Michael Douglas does look great, and Catherine is so beautiful!
LOL, ooh and Ricky gets one last one in before the credits.
Equipoise, you’ll probably know the answer to this. When a film wins Best Picture at the Oscars, who actually wins the award? I’m just wondering if The Social Network wins if Kevin Spacey will get a third Oscar (for producing.)
The Producers do, not just an Exec.Prod. (which is what Spacey is). It remains to be seen who the AMPAS will determine as the nominated producers, but Scott Rudin will almost certainly be one (and he may be a two-fer, since he also produced True Grit).
If the producer credits on IMDb are accurate then Kevin Spacey would not get a nomination since Executive Producers don’t qualify. From the rules:
Four producers are listed on IMDb, so they’ll have to cut one if that is the accurate credits:
Scott Rudin, Michael De Luca, Dana Brunetti, Cean Chaffin
I think there’s a limit as to who can go onstage, and who gets the Oscar, but I don’t know the details. I’ll have to look it up. There are 7 producers listed for TSN. Scott Rudin for sure would get an Oscar as Executive Producer. Since Spacey is also listed as Executive Producer, the only other one listed, he very well could get an Oscar. That would be cool.
How amazing is Scott Rudin by the way!?!?!? Look at his IMDB page!
Ooops, ob was faster and had more details. I thought it was Executive Producers who got the awards. Never mind.
Actually, it’s just the opposite. Rudin is a primary producer, not an Exec. (which tends to be more of an honorary title). So Spacey is definitely out–but you’re right, the Academy limits the number of producers eligible for the nod, usually to 3 (there are a couple of exceptions), so we’ll see what they determine.
