I am not sure how I feel about policing language towards those who you hate.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think it is right, and wouldn’t really use those insults, as there are plenty of better invectives to throw around, so there really is no need for it, and I am not really a huge fan of hurting people.
But calling someone an insult is done so because you don’t respect that person, and so using negative language against that person.
I was with an acquaintance when a woman cut him off. He yelled “Cunt!” out his window at her. I asked him why he chose to use this language, and he said it was the most hurtful thing he could think of, and he wanted to hurt her.
I don’t know that I see how calling one woman by an insulting term that happens to be specific to females insults the entirety of females. I see it as language that is meant to hurt a specific person.
I can see “slut” as that is implying that they are sexually promiscuous, and that there is something wrong with that, so there is carryover to the rest of the gender on that word. Similar to how “gay” used as an insult implies there is something wrong with being gay.
But I really see “cunt” as the female equivalent of “dick”, I see both males and females referred to as “whores”, in that they give up their principles in exchange for money or other material gain.
Like I said, I am certainly not tied to these words, and don’t think I have ever used them in an inappropriate or non-academic setting, but I am not sure where exactly the misogyny comes in, when your intent is not to insult and degrade a gender, but your intent is in fact to insult and degrade a person. I generally try to avoid being insulting and degrading to anyone, so I guess I don’t necessarily see the difference.
