I just book two nights at the Hotel Olcott, not Wolcott, for $99 per night. The Olcott is at 27 West 72nd, a hop and skip from Billdo’s Bagel Brunch. Reservation desk is only open limited hours, and you’d need to send a check in the mail for a deposit.
Yes, I said “send a check in the mail”. Yes, this will be 2003.
Well, if I’m in VT at the time, then I can’t go. That is the determining facter. If I’m on VT, then it’s for a specific reason, if I can get away then I will go first to NY (probably for the new year) and then be able to go down to the city that weekend. So it seems that Honey will be able to give me a ride. I’ll let you know before Christmas if I will actually be there for you to pick me up, along with directions.
Sadly, sadly, I will have to be scratched from the list. All the money’s going to holiday stuff; people are visiting a couple weekends after the fest…and there’s really no excuse that will make me happy, but still, I won’t be there.
Not that this is a bump or anything, but would this be a good time to ask about ground transportation from LGA at 5:30pm Friday into the Upper West Side? Taxi? LaGuardia seems utterly void of subway lines. On that note, anybody wanna share a taxi around that time?
Along those same lines, if any of the Thursday-arriving out-of-town Dopers are arriving at Laguardia at around 5:00 pm, I’d love to share a taxi as well.
I have just worked out my Holiday schedule, and all looks well. Lindy, I’ll be in touch as soon as I confirm with the missus how we will handle the travelling.
I’m still sad that I won’t be there to have fun with you. BUT my very good friend Mortimer, the Travelling Sheep will be there in my stead, so be sure to say hello to him (he will probably be hanging out with Joey Hemlock).
I can tell you’re all going to have a fabulous time. Take many pictures so I can be jealous.
My advice on this, particularly if two are travelling together, is to take a cab. The ride from LGA to West 72nd Street is about $17-22, plus $3.50 toll plus tip.
If you want to go cheap, you can take the M60 bus, which runs from LGA to 125th Street, and transfer at Lenox Ave to the # 2 or 3 train to 72nd Street. The fare is $1.50 (I’d make sure you have that in coins if you’re coming from out of town), and you can get a transfer that you can use to get on the subway.
Lindy, I’d suggest a cab, particularly if you can get someone to share it, or the SuperShuttle van service if you want to save a few bucks. You can also get an airport bus, which is cheaper but won’t take you precisely where you want to go.
I posted a general discussion of airport transport on page 4 of the prior thread, and I’ll include details and links on the next update.
There are two hotels, the Olcott on West 72nd and the Wolcott on West 31st. Olcott is $99 for a studio, I have not called the Wolcott, but Lindyhopper reported getting a room for about $80 on the last page.
Hey, we’re on page four now, how come we’re not peer-pressuring all the guys into wearing kilts yet? Persephone, I’m terribly disappointed in you! (My fella will be wearing one. Oh yes.)
My boys were quite warm on the stroll through the Village last year, and it was a bit nippy out. With the jacket and the wool, I was fine. You’d be surprised, but dude, you’re gonna have to trust me on this one. Kilt Checks are for the wimmins.
