I actually just did them as a veggie plate. Beets and jicama cut into strips that are maybe 1/2" x 1/4" x 2" long. Not too thick, but thick enough that they’re crispy. I put lime juice on them and a little bit of salt. You can do the same with carrots and cucumber - they also taste really good with lime juice and salt. I don’t normally mix beets in with anything else because they take over, colorwise. I saw an interesting beet and carrot slaw recipe the other day, but I’m not sure where. Googling only turns up recipes that aren’t the one I’m thinking of.
We went from interminable rain to summer. Boo.
I don’t have very specific plans for summer. I’d like to get my house painted, if the weather cooperates for a few days. I’ve got lots to do in the garden. I’ve got a few day trips planned as well. I’d like to go visit Mom, but haven’t found a good date yet.
I’m doin’ poke chops for dindin tomorrow MOOOOOOM. Perhaps we should start coordinatin’ menus.
We were kinda matching up menus last week. Getting a three-way match would be just weird.
It’s hot! It got to 98 today, or so they say. Unfortunately, Mr. Carrier’s invention isn’t helping us. We came home from a party yesterday and were puzzled why it was warm in the house. Thermostat’s blank. uh-oh… Do some sleuthing and find the circuit breaker’s popped. Reset it, and the system comes back to life. For 15 seconds. <pop!> Aw crap.
Right now at 10:30 PM, it’s 82 degrees inside and still 90 outside. We’re half-naked and sticky. Not the fun sort of hot and sticky either. The air conditioning guy is due to arrive tomorrow afternoon.
The A/C guy is EVERYBODY’s friend there days—ours poped by Saturday, redid some wires, gave it a shot of A/C juice and it lumbered to life for yet another year. They are comming back to de-gunk the coils–haven’t been touched in 4 years, the cleaning should lower the power bill somewhat.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffienatin’ YAWN 'Tis 72 Amurrkin out with a predicted high of 101! Factor in hyooomidity and it’ll be more like 108! I might melt.
Alien I have the A/C guys come out every Spring to check everything out and make sure everything’s ok. Money well spent!
Rosie those kidlets are some keeeeeeeeyoooooooote overload!
{{{Soapy}}}
I’ll be in my bunk.
Ok, now I seek more caffiene plus rumbly tummy wants to be fed. Then, alas irk purtification must commence.
This stoopid allergy stuff bites donkey balls. I didn’t sleep very well.
I’m going to visit my friend from Missouri after work today. She’s in town to visit her daughter and SIL, and watch the grandbabies for three weeks while the grown kids go work some folk festival. They leave tomorrow night, so this is the last chance I’ll get to see her, and her new boob job! (She had a reduction.)
The AC seems to be functioning here at work today. Yay! Yesterday was miserable with it never getting below 80° in here. (Where’s the sweaty smiley?)
Servers are actually up and running, too! I can get some work done.
See ya!
Oh, yeah:
:cue twilight zone theme:
We had pork chops last night!
Howdy from irk. I am postin’ from my newly setup irk landin’ space. Since I wander around all over the place as a part of irk, I don’t have an office per se but a landin’ space at the main place. I likes it! The good part for me is I use a laptop for irk stuff, so I can pretty much irk from anywhere but it’s nice to have a sit down place for paper irk and such.
Today is an actual day off. I slept in till 6:30, walked all the dogs(that was a lot of poop), and had a Greek style omelet for brunch. Now I’m chilling in the A/C. Playoff hockey tonight on TV.
:DAnti-Blurf!!!

Congrats picu!!!
I have poke chops in my fridge. It’s like we all part of some perverted, pig eating collective.:D;)
I usually put a little blurb here for the French and Indian War event at Cook Forest. Its June 11th and 12th this year in case our friend is still lurking around and interested. Look for the tired old priest if you get there.
Today at lunch, my new coworkers were talking about the recent trip to Japan of one of them. Some of the workers have lost family, home, everything: they are now living in the factory itself. The factory is working two daily shifts, each 11h long. My coworkers kept remarking on how amazing it is that anybody would work 11h days.
After lunch, I asked about our regular working hours, which nobody had told me yet: 7:30sh to 18:30sh. Have I forgotten how to count? I’m reasonably sure the Japanese get some sort of lunch break too.
Tomorrow I have to get blood extracted at the Preventative Healthcare For People With Jobs place; they will also make me watch some slides on workplace safety (I could write those… what language do you want them in?), give me an appointment to come get the results and get verified as “healthy enough to use a computer while sitting down”. Most other places just verify that subcontractors appear alive, whether any special adaptations are needed, and give subcontractors the same safety information their own employees get; it’s faster and doesn’t involve fasting
Hamburgers for supper - anyone? anyone?? And some salad and chips, I think.
Well, it looks like I could be all retired by the end of July, or maybe August. I was hoping to hang in there till the end of Sept - we shall see when the announcement is finally made. We’re waiting on the official RIF letter before the clock starts.
On the plus side, **FCD **thinks they might take me in as a draftsman, which would be cool. I could be an as-needed employee, on call when they need some drafting done. That would suit me just fine. I’ll talk to him some more when he gets home.
I harvested 4 more cherry 'maters. My strawberry plants, on the other hand, pretty much suck. I’m not sure what to do about them. Same with the blackberry bush. Oh well… One day closer to the weekend. Nothing else matters, right?
AC guy has done his deed and gone. I think the landlord got off cheap - one circuit breaker, a “hard start kit” and a bit of R22. The AC units are now cranking away full tilt, trying to overcome three days’ worth of heat buildup in the house. Meanwhile, I melt drop by drop into the rug…
Altho I do have to learn how to work with Inventor or Solid Works, since the last program I used was Autocad2000. Never used a parametric modeling program, and I haven’t done any real drafting for about 8 or 9 years - maybe more. There are a few cobwebs that’ll need to be dusted off.
Hi, everybody. The bad penny turns up again! I know, I know, I abandoned you all for greener (well, yarnier) pastures for a while…but I’m bad. I’m just sorry it took whiterabbit telling me about Norine’s death to get me back here.
Anyway, since I was here last we finally bought a nice house – in Virginia. Papa Tiger’s job is moving to Fort Belvoir in just a few more weeks when they close Walter Reed, so we took advantage of the market being waaay down and found a lovely older home in a pleasant neighborhood and have greatly enjoyed the change. Isaac the idiot yellow lab loves his new, MUCH larger back yard, too, with a whole barky chorus of neighborhood dogs to join!
So what am I doing this summer? Abandoning Papa Tiger over the period where they’re closing the hospital and moving all the patients, like any sensible person! I’m going to head to the mountains and hang out with whiterabbit, just us girls, for a couple of weeks. Well, we’re also going to do a road trip to Seattle to visit my mom, who’s now 90 and hanging in there but needs regular checking up on; but otherwise, we’re just going to hang out and have fun together. While poor Papa Tiger works 16-hour days 7 days a week. Hey, I know when the gettin’ is best!
I haven’t had a chance to read the whole thread yet, but will go back and do that in a bit when I finish up on some rush work. 'Tis the season for rush work. And these days I have not one but two firms after me to do their work, so I’m busier than is probably healthy. Ah well, money is nice, right?
Well, it doesn’t really count if it’s only still left in the shady spots!
Our daughter’s best friend got married on the Victoria Day long weekend. Big white wedding bash, dinner, dancing, etc., with all the trimmings. Our daughter is getting married next week in Las Vegas at an Elvis wedding chapel, just her and SIL-to-be. Daughter adamantly does NOT want anything other than a low-key event, no crowds of people etc., but Mrs. B is now starting to mumph about missing out on the white wedding thing. Oh, well, she’ll have to be satisfied with the reception when they get back.
MamaTigs! Good to see you back! I was this >< close to dropping you an email to see how you were doing, but you know how life gets in the way sometimes.
You *must *share pics of your new digs - I had to go to Belvoir for training a couple of times and I thought it was a pretty area, once you get off the main drags.
Back to the kitchen with me - those burgers won’t cook themselves. Well, actually, they’re doing fine in the broiler, but… laterz!!!
I have two jobs to apply to this weekend and an HR department to call tomorrow.
It’s also ungodly hot. Not Mountain Muggy, genuinely “why the hell is it 91 degrees this early” hot. So I get to walk home again tomorrow. It’s fine when I’m actually walking because there’s a breeze (usually from the cars zipping by me) but as soon as I walk in the door all the heat suddenly catches up to me.
