I had mine done long ago. Or is it, I had mine dong lone ago. ha ha ha They snipped on a Thursday, and by Monday I was up and about, on light duty. I felt great over that weekend, and they said I would but they also said I’d feel good enough to be up and about, and I was, but they warned me to stay down, icing my junk.
By the end of the week, I was back to full duty.
Minimal pain / discomfort, nothing really worth writing about. Follow the post op instructions to the letter and you should be fine. The worst part for me was shaving my balls before. The best part was (is!) truly spontaneous sex.
I’m currently waiting the results from my dr’s office on my second sample (they consider you “infertile” if you return two 0-counts in a row and I was successful the first time). Overall, it was mildly uncomfortable. I’m one of those people whose body reacts poorly to medical procedures and I nearly fainted twice on the operating table as I could feel some of what was going on down there (no pain) and my silly imagination tried to fill in the blanks for me).
I had the procedure done on a Friday and spent the rest of that day with the ubiquitous bag of peas in the recliner, just using OTC pain killers. I had almost no real pain the first day, but there was some more pain on Saturday. By Saturday evening I felt pretty ok and spent Sunday afternoon out for shopping, haircuts and lunch with the family, although I needed a few more sit breaks.
I had an unusual amount of swelling on one side probably based on varicocele. I was a bit extra sensitive for a few weeks, and felt like I was walking bow-legged for a few days. The worst part was that it was about a week or 10 days before I felt comfortable lying in bed, as my scrotum was so swollen.
I guess this new vasectomy approach is a good one because I never experienced any discomfort at all, really. And while I was a bit careful over the weekend, I wasn’t that careful. I did light chores and took walks.
Of course,** for all I know he didn’t even sever the tubes**. I wasn’t watching, right? So how would I know? Maybe it’s a scam; he does a little incision, pretends to do something, and in three months when my test says my swimmers are still swimming, I go back, he says “Well, darn it, your body sure does heal well” and does it for real, billing OHIP for a second procedure. It’s so crazy it just might be true.
My doc recommended a jock strap for after surgery. I didn’t believe him. A couple hours after the surgery, I begged my wife to go get me a jock strap. Why I didn’t believe the guy who went to school for several years to earn the title of “Doctor” is beyond me. Jock strap and frozen peas were my friends for a few days.
Surgery was on Friday, I went back to an office job on Monday with the jock strap on, (and pants for all of you dirty minded people )
I was a careful on how I stood up for a couple of days, but it wasn’t bad at all at work.
I’m surprised I haven’t seen mention of the at-home sterilization test. I had my vasectomy earlier this year and for the validation, they connected me with another company that produces at-home testing kits. For $50 or so, they send you a package with two tests which you do your self.
It’s basically like a pregnancy test. You “go” in a cup, add some solution and apply to a little tester. One line for “firing blanks”, two for “live ammo”. :o It was very easy, and I never had to go back to the clinic.
As others mentioned, they recommend you do two tests, at least 2 weeks apart, about 3 MONTHS after the surgery. Those of you who have had the surgery in the past (and never did the follow-up ?!!), you might want to consider getting one of these tests for peace of mind. I think the company that makes them is just called SpermCheck.
Thanks to all who participated in prior threads which I read up on before my procedure. Swapping out 2 bags of frozen peas worked like a charm. There was only minor discomfort the day of and following day (never any pain, just an ominous feeling that if I do too much, pain would be imminent). By two days after I was fine to drive and get around. At 7 days the last of the stitches came out and I was back to 100%.
Dr. Weiss’ name is a running joke around here between all the dads. It’s always funny when one of the… errr… “still-productive” dads ask who he is… and we all respond “You’ll find out soon enough!”
