Thing-a-Day, 2011 edition

I’ve tagged mine with my name as well as SDMB, but just searching for that doesn’t get every post with that tag.

And I’m getting emails of comments on random people’s entries but not for comments on my entries.

I posted today’s early since I have to work tonight.

It looks like most of us are doing visual arts, which flickr could handle. Is anyone doing non-visual crafts?

Le Ministre - how long are your videos running? Flickr allows videos up to 90 second.

We could put the pictures into the sdmb meets flickr group

I’m sorry this isn’t working out well for everyone. Next year I’ll try to get a site set up for us all to post to.

Flickr doesn’t work well for me, so I’m going to keep using the Shutterfly site and my blog for my own posts, and I’ll keep checking back here to see what you’re all up to. Please keep sharing links to your creations, they’re awesome and I’m enjoying them!

This is working out well for me - I’m sorry if I’ve given the impression that it’s not. I love that it’s a big tangled jumble of different crafts, disciplines and that all levels of skill have been encouraged and appreciated. I’m finally getting the hang of scrolling through the most recent pages and commenting immediately on whatever catches my eye, even if the comment is nothing more than a ‘Lovely!’.

For me personally, this has been a giant leap forward - I’ve struggled with composition for years without making any kind of progress. Having the obligation to post something, anything, on a daily basis coupled with the people’s supportive comments has been tremendous.

I have a wish list for the web site for next time. I’d love it if it could work out that we could post something once, in one spot, and have it automatically go to the SDMB group page, the Le Ministre page and the Thing a Day page (plus whatever other affiliations you wish). I’d love it if for every post, I could click on something that would show me everything that person has done. I’d like to be able to easily go back and look at, say, Day 7. I’d like to be able to easily follow up on people’s comments - even if it’s just to say a ‘thank you’. Navigator buttons top and bottom would be a good idea. The search function could be a lot better.

You know, if the blog went the other way, so that the oldest stuff was on the page with the lowest number, that would go a long way toward solving a number of these problems. Your post from Day 5 on page 79 wouldn’t have to move…

I’m not sure I’d be able to keep this up at any other time - when I’m at home, it’s all I can do to squeeze my 3 hours a day of practice in while doing the laundry, dishes, groceries, meals, errands, vacuuming and cleaning. Shaving this extra time out of that schedule would be extremely difficult, if not impossible.

Zyada - some of my stuff has been as long as 2:30, though most of it is shorter. It doesn’t particularly need to be on video - I just find people are a little more forgiving of my sometimes scrappy playing if they can see my hands dealing with an awkward shift. Other than that, there’s no good reason that they have to see my mug making guitar faces. I should look into Flickr and see if it will allow audio-only material.

And I’m immensely enjoying everyone’s contributions. The Angry Chickens, the beautiful jewelery, the glass fusings, the Easter egg, the collages - it’s all fantastic. I’m very glad I let myself get talked into this.

That is everything I’d like to see in a website with the addition of a forum for general discussion, questions, etc.

I post via e-mail, and when I put the general TAD address, the SDMBTAD addy, and my posterous addy in the TO field, it goes all three places. How are you posting? (Maybe my method won’t work for you because you’re submitting video.)

I just saw Antigen’s message upthread about the Shutterfly account, so I just made an album there. (Your eggs are really neat, BTW!)

twicks, I love the Homage to Henri!

I don’t know why not, but if I do that it will only get posted on the first address I send to. I need to do three separate e-mail, to the general TAD, the SDMB TAD and the Le Ministre posterous account. That could be as much a part of my ISP’s irritating web-mail interface as anything else…

See, it’d also be cool if the same comments showed up in all three places. I don’t know how that would work in terms of web-site organization, but that would certainly make it easier to respond to people’s comments.

Perhaps we ought to move the whole thing to FaceBook… (d&r)

I also haven’t figured out if there is a way to add tags in an e-mail. Not that I’ve succeeded in finding anything by searching for tags…

I found how to add tags via email.

In your subject line, end with ((tag: tag1, tag2…))

That will be removed from the subject and added as tags.

Maybe for next year, I’ll write a web page to collect our entries.

Thanks!

All your stuff is gorgeous, but I esp. like that bracelet.

Thanks! I can’t seem to stop making them… I only bought three of them, but I’m considering a trip to Michael’s tomorrow to get more!

I love the jewelry you’re making, it’s all very pretty! Do you sell that stuff?

Me too! Is Henri the cat or the fishy?

She sure does! I bought a pendant from her that’s gotten a lot of compliments – love telling people I know the artist. Check out BebopBeads on etsy.

Actually, Henri is Matisse, one of my all-time favorite artists. He did paper cutouts at the end of his life, when his hands were too crippled by arthritis to hold a paintbrush. (Check out his “Jazz” series.) After I was done, not only the medium, but the colors reminded me of him, and of the interiors he did earlier in his career.

Okay, I’ve been making stuff (well, skipped Thursday because I was beyond fried, but did two today to catch up) but not posting. Caught up on posting now.

I was in a funk last week, probably peri-menopausal related, not sleeping well, not able to concentrate, etc. I did little odds and ends, cut some cardboard for my cat scratcher, made some plarn, organized some things and then kicked myself in the butt on Friday and did a lot of house cleaning and did some yard work on Saturday and Sunday. But I haven’t posted anything because I just haven’t felt like it. Reading the blog I see I’m not the only one. Anyway, I haven’t given up and I’m going to try to get back in the groove and post soon.

Well, that was really interesting, and I’m glad I did it. Boy, what a lot of work, though! Net results - Twenty-two short songs, five dinner parties (that I would have thrown anyway.) and one short story (that I would have had to have written anyway.)

I’ll probably keep the Le Ministre posterous account going, but with my next show and a recital coming up in less than 3 months, I’ll be very lucky to be able to post anything once a month, let alone more often.

I just wanted to say “Thank You” to twickster for bringing this to my attention - I wouldn’t have signed up if I hadn’t seen this thread.

I’ve been doing stuff, but not every day, and I haven’t been posting. Obviously persistence isn’t my strong point.

The shit really hit the fan last week at work, so, per my annual tradition, I didn’t do 28 things. Total of 20, I think – I guess I should post the rest of them.

The collaging was super fun, though, and I’m not really ready to clean off the dining room table yet. Still lots of paper to go!

Dunno if Posterous ever came back up for me or not … I haven’t been doing the community thing this year, sigh.

Well, I dropped out. I did some stuff but stopped posting. I kept meaning to but I’d have a busy night at work or need to get stuff done around the house. I haven’t even had time to turn my computer on in a week. I guess I knew I would, I feel like I have to finish multiple house cleaning, organizing, decluttering and remodeling/redecorating projects before I have room or time to work on creative artsy projects. Not to mention not being unable to find my supplies because I’m so disorganized. I may try next year if I can get all the other stuff done.
