Mom certainly wouldn’t have told young me that! I thought it was a department store.
Dad was in construction and once had to tear down a real cathouse in San Bernardio. Mom got mad at him because after he told us about it, us kids all wanted red velvet furniture and mirrors on the ceilings. We didn’t know why we want such things, but we knew that Dad wanted them and that was enough for us. I can barely remember it, but Mom does to this day! Telling his impressionable young daughters about the inside of a cathouse, oh gosh, how could he!!!
Terry Nichols, his name was Terry. I knew I’d remember given enough time. I’m glad it happened now instead of waking up at two in the morning saying AhHa!
Most of my meeting famous folks came from my time in a San Diego theatre. Played beach volleyball with Neil Patrick Harris at the crew opening weekend beach party. Shot the shit with Penn Gillette backstage during shows, super nice guy, funny offstage, too. The dude from “Airplane”, Bob Hays, taught me a bunch of nice back stretches. He insisted we call him Bob, not Robert.
Well, theater folks don’t count! They meet more famous folks in a day than us common folks meet in a decade!
What did you do in the theater? Not everyone is an actor, but the other jobs are also very cool and interesting. Unless you were the janitor. I was a janitor at the Arizona Monument for a while and learned that some jobs really don’t have cool and interesting stuff involved.
Our shut-in but stubborn friend has finally realized that he cannot take care of himself anymore. He doesn’t have internet and doesn’t know how to find an assisted living place, so Hubs is looking for him. Hubs is a very good friend.
I spoke too soon. I thought I could start backing off on the antihistamines. The itching yelled, “Whoa, Nellie!” Hmph. This morning I called the allergy clinic I was referred to and got VM. Left a message but haven’t heard back yet.
My brother called. He was driving cross-country from their summer quarters to their other home on the east coast, a loooong drive, and we have a tradition where he calls me about three hours from journey’s end, and I talk him home. And I’m just the gal to do it, too.
Holy obsidian. Batman! That is SO cool!
I was not a fan during his presidency, but he seemed a lot more human afterward. I read that he liked to go to the gates and hand out candy to trick-or-treaters.
I wonder who paid for all the free booze at the 19th hole. You’ve sure led an interesting life! So has VanGo! AND missred!
I have not. I’m two handshakes away from Britney Spears, but I can’t explain how because it would out the person in between. Lessee…the father of a friend used to play golf with Alice Cooper. “Good ol’ Al,” he’d say. “Helluva nice guy.” The only famous person I’ve known first-hand is one you probably don’'t recognize: Eudora Welty once spent several minutes complimenting me on my writing. That’s all I’ve got.
Nettie, I love that Room of Doom name.
Mooooom, SO glad FCD is getting MRI’d tomorrow. Let us know how it goes.
shoe, we’re always here to remind you of how wonderful you truly are. Sometimes it’s hard to see that from the inside looking out, but it’s true.
I painted sets a the La Jolla Playhouse/UCSD for a couple of years in the mid 90’s.
My favorite piece I didn’t get to see lit properly. IIRC it was for a show about Jewish jazz men in Germany, ca WW2. But the drop was intended to look like photos in a newspaper We did it by spraying paints through wicker seat material.
I didn’t understand how very cool it was until I was much older. I was just a kid who liked dinosaurs and was in walking distance to go to museum after school. Mom encouraged this and told me to volunteer to help, so I did. I was just a little set of hands, I didn’t do anything important. I did once hold a skull of a precursor to the well known Saber Tooth Tiger. Both Doctors treated me just like a grown-up which impressed me almost as much as the skull.
I was lucky enough to be raised in a different time, one where the world moved a little slower and wasn’t so crowded. If I didn’t get to the bus stop on time, I had to walk about a mile to school and yes there was a lot of uphill going on. Nowadays, a parent/caretaker would drive the child to school.
Harrumph indeed! Mass production doesn’t compare to artistry. Was the spraying through the wicker seat stuff an original idea for that work? If so, very, VERY cool!
Oops, forgot to mention that you the tax payers paid for my drinks while Nixon golfed. Thanks tax payers, I had some amazing drinks while looking out over the empty golf course and ocean.
Nellie I hope the antihistamines get your itching sorted out soonest.
Moomm glad FCD is finally getting his MRI.
shoe you are wonderful and we’re glad you’re with us. And your food sounds delish.
I knew someone who worked as a dramaturge in that area at that time. Maybe you and I have a degree of connection…
I grew up in LA and knew lots of folks, mainly due to the school I attended. I also did some volunteer work and ran into people there. I’m not going to run through the whole list, but I will mention that I used to babysit for John Carpenter, the director. That was fun.
I enjoy his work, too, and I think I recall him saying on Facebook that it’s not that he doesn’t like cats, it’s that he’s extremely allergic to them.
@The_Stainless_Steel_Rat, I’m usually good at these things, which is why I’m so aggravated. Dunno, maybe it’s that I’m trying to do the assembly on carpet, and that’s allowing too much flexing while I’m trying to achieve solidity.
Aggravated enough by the Foreman grill arriving with broken handles. Fortunately, the Jungle was quite eager to exchange it. Attempt 2 is due Friday, need to drop the bad one with return label at Kohl’s this weekend.
Once had a nice chat with Ruth Buzzi at some litlle shop in the Santa Barbara area (she was there for a car show). I didn’t even recognize her, but DH (seven years my senior) did, although he thought the woman we were chatting with seemed too young to be who she was (she did seem flattered by that). Also happened to be in a magic shop in LA when Harry Anderson came bouncing in (identity confirmed by an employee). I did enjoy “Night Court”, but did not attempt to interact. Seemed only polite to let the gentleman enjoy his shopping in peace.
Yes, I’m still up. Awhile ago, I heard three shots fired in rapid succession–definitely shots and not fireworks or a backfiring vehicle. Four years ago, there was a gunfight at the house across the street from my complex that wounded two people. The shots tonight sounded like they were coming from there or close to it, but sounds can be tricky. Judging from the comments on Nextdoor, people from all over my side of town heard the shots. Police are investigating.
Woke around 4, dammit, but mostly slept well. I woke thinking Matt lost on Jeopardy last night, but I’m pretty sure it was just a dream. Weird brain.
Shortly, I will shower and tend the critters so we can hit the road early. This afternoon, I have to fetch Roxy. The middle of the day is still unplanned. Perhaps an adventure awaits? Or not. Who knows?
yay! i had a problem with well potty related things until I was about 11 years old when I realized the part that was supposed to tell you you needed to go wasn’t telling me anything after an incident and I told grandma and I went to a urologist and has a couple of procedures done …the bad thing is I quit taking the medicine about after a year when it was decided I didn’t need it or the doctor visits anymore, Now if I have to go in the slightest it feels like I’ve been holding it for hours …
I just got an email from our electric co-op about a program I apparently had signed up for. They have been sending me periodic updates about my energy consumption in an attempt to get me to conserve. Which is fine, but I don’t remember signing up for it. Anyway, I completed the survey, and apparently in a few weeks, they’ll be sending me $100 or $150 based on my energy use.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 61 Amurrkin out and clear with a predicted high of 90 and mostly N.O.S. for the day. I foresee a day of honin’ sloth skills. I could mow, but somehow cannot foresee that happenin’ today. I shall, however, make red beans 'n rice (with snausages) for sup, so there’s that for productivity.
unknown good for hubs and you helpin’ out your friend. You know for real celebrities, I am impressed! I do not. I did grow up near FDR’s Little White House, however. FTR, Nixon was never impeached. The house was in the process, but he resigned.
red and VanGo y’all know for real celebrities as well. Impressed, I am!
MOOOOOOM hope FCD’s MRI goes well. I got a hundred and fifty dollah rebate from Jawja power a couple of years ago that was based on our energy use. So, yay free money!
Nettie hope you get the shelf for the room of doom put together today.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.
Sitting in the waiting area at the imaging center. He’s getting an x-ray and a CT scan. They just called him back. They provide Wi-Fi here, so I can amuse myself while waiting.
I don’t know any famous people. Met a couple, but don’t know them.
The furniture saga continues, but I am hoping we’re near the end of part one. The requisition and funding for the extra labor charges and pieces that should have been ordered are done. Hope it goes through today because tomorrow the Government may be shut down.
I am trying to finish up an application for an intensive leadership program through work, but keep getting interrupted. I have until tomorrow to submit, but I hate doing things last minute. I would have had it done had the furniture thing not been such a hassle. Oh well. I may not even get selected, and part of me is fine with that because there is just so much to do for work. We’ll see.
It’s supposed to be rainy all day long today. A good day for a nap, but alas work calls. I did not sleep well at all. I was so tired yesterday that I went to bed at 8:45 which is pretty early for me. I went to bed, although I did not sleep. The last time I looked a the alarm clock it was 2:30 am and my alarm went off at 3:30. I hit snooze a couple of times but ended up getting out of bed at 3:50 am. It’s gonna be a loooong day but, maybe I’ll sleep tonight.
