Things That Go Bzzzzz In The Night: A Ghostly MMP

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off today. It’s nice out, so I shall open the windows after vacuuming. I didn’t win Powerball, so I guess I gotta show up sober at work tomorrow.

Last night I dreamed I was stuck in an elevator with Rupert Holmes, and there was no Escape.

That’s coming, there’s just a wait for the required PSWSLS vaccine before I can go.

A deranged terrier tour? OK.(Gordie is like a toenail fungus. Irritating at first, then he really grows on you.)

No, I didn’t. Although I always enjoy celebratory arson.

We’re at about 55 feet above the bay, and there’s snow mixed with the rain. (Of course. It’s Recycling Day. It always has to be wet on Recycling Day.) The Spousal Unit has just started a fire in the wood stove.

We’ll have steak and eggs and hashbrowns for breakfast in a few minutes.

Wood fire sounds good. Maybe I’ll bring some splits in to dry out. A few years ago, we had Vaux’s swifts nesting in the chimney. The cats liked it, but we had to wait until they’d migrated to have the chimney capped and light a fire.

I did 2 loads of laundry this morning, thanks to dirties from the grands. When the second one was done, I did a quick rake-out of a couple of garden beds then fired up the mower and mulcher. I made 3 passes, emptied the cart, then stopped to top off the mower’s gas tank (shoulda done that first.)

I fired up the mower, but when I engaged the blades, it died. Turns out, there was a monster clog in the discharge tube, but I got it unclogged and the mower is fine. The mulcher, however, won’t restart. I decided to come in for lunch and let it sit a bit before trying again. FCD has left for his date with Roxy. If I can’t get the damned mulcher started, I’ll detach the mower and just ride it around to chop up leaves. We shall see.

I’m in shorts and sweating… in NOVEMBER in MERRYLANDE!!! Insanity!! Weird, weird weather.

For some reason my Dope isn’t marking new MMP posts as unread so I’m missing out. I have this thread as “watching”. Any clue as to what I need to do so MMP posts show up in my ‘unread’ list?

I feel like I’ve been marooned on a desert island.

Tell me in little words because I am a tech peasant.

I think today will be a jammies day, as I’m less itchy in them. It’s also plant watering day, Oh, the excitement! The kids will call, as they always do. Due to the only one of the four of them (I count my DIL and SIL.) I didn’t get to see this week was my daughter. A rare week indeed that I get to see 3 out of 4!

We got lots more rain overnight.

Happy end-of-Daylight-Saving-Time! If I have to choose between more light in the mornings or more light in the evenings, I’ll take mornings: it’s soooo hard to get up/going when it’s still dark outside (even with my wake-up light).

Of course, Bailey’s internal clock didn’t reset…she’ll adjust shortly before it’s time to start DST again.

I’ve had a dishwasher everywhere I’ve lived as an adult, except the one year I lived in Arlington, Va.: that kitchen hadn’t been updated since the house was built in 1953. I live alone, and found that I didn’t mind handwashing my stuff at all. That was 8 years ago. I still sometimes handwash things, but I do tend to load up the dishwasher.

Yesterday I met a friend/former co-worker and her adult daughter for lunch. I’ve known her (and the daughter) since 2001: we stopped being co-workers in 2006, but continued to meet up for lunch every few months over the years. When her daughter hit high school, she started joining us from time to time. Until yesterday I hadn’t seen her/them since before the pandemic: we met at the same casual restaurant we’ve been going to for 20+ years, and wound up sitting in the (otherwise empty) place and talking for almost 5 hours. It was really nice to catch up!

There is a Great Harvest bakery next to the restaurant: they make awesome dog treats, and the best scones I’ve ever had in my life (and I once lived in the UK). I hadn’t been in one since the last time I met this friend for lunch, so I got some treats for Bailey…and one scone for myself. My first truly “bad” food since surgery! I ate it after dinner, and tolerated it just fine. I’ll confess to slightly mixed feelings about that: the more I can tolerate physically, the more work I’ll have to do emotionally/psychologically to ensure the weight stays off. Ultimately, though, I do want my food options to be more broad than narrow.

I am off work all week! Woo hoo!!! I’ll be in some company-provided training on Monday and Wednesday from 4pm-8pm, and I’ll need to log in a little early tomorrow to take care of two quick reports, but otherwise I’m in staycation mode.

I haven’t heard anything about election day (Tuesday) yet: as far as I know, I’m still on standby to be a fill-in election officer somewhere in the county. I really do enjoy helping people vote, but it makes for a really long day…at this point, I’m mostly hoping that I won’t be needed.

I’ve had the windows open 24/7 for the past two days. Crazy weather for early November, but I’ll take it while it lasts! It rained early this morning, so there’s an ever-so-slightly-damp feel in the house, but it’s tolerable. We’re expecting a high of 76 (it’s currently 73), so even though it’s still a little overcast things should be drying out soon. I have no plans for today other than some reading while I eat lunch, then some quality couch/TV time.

That was a cutesplosion!

Congrats!

Too bad…you could have called him afterwards and left a message on his Answering Machine.

I have the current MMP set to “tracking” and set the new one to that every week (once I find it) and I always get hew posts marked unread. Maybe that’s what you need to do?

I get to the latest posts by going to my avatar in the upper right of the screen and clicking on it - I get a link to the latest MMP posts in that menu.

Apparently, the mulcher needs to sit for a couple of hours before it deigns to start again. I just finished clearing the back yard. In the interim, I just rode around the front yard chopping what leaves I could - not ideal, but done. Maybe tomorrow I’ll drag the mulcher around the front.

I wear earmuffs and I think I need to get goggles, too. I’ve got leaf crud in my eyes - the glasses, they do nothing!! I think FCD may have some safety goggles in his shop.

So chores are done for today, apart from making supper. I’ve got a pile of russets that need to be use, so I’m thinking soup - maybe a double batch, and I’ll send some to the inlaws. But for the moment, it’s time to read.

16 minutes, 3 injuries, 2 Red zone picks.
#ExperiencePackersFootball
And Detroit scores the first points of the game with 15 seconds left in the half, because Lions still gotta Lion.

Thank Og there’s hockey at 5. :ice_hockey: :goal_net:

Thanks, I’ll try both of those. I appreciate the help.

I get so verklempt if it feels like I’m out of touch with my buds. Yesterday mid-afternoon I realized I hadn’t ‘heard’ from the Mumpers and I was adrift til I found everybody again. You guys ‘people’ my world (and I love it!)

Awwwwww…
{{{{BBBoo}}}}

I was out in the catio, getting an armful of wood when I heard a ‘pop’ down by the beach. When I came inside, the power was out. I’ve started the generator, so we have cable and Internet for as long as Xfinity’s power backup holds out (maybe three hours).

You may have seasonal allergies to whatever kind of leaves, etc fall at your place, as well as pollen and/or leaf mold. Fall allergies (eyes, nose) gets overlooked but it can be miserable, as I found out last Thursday! Crusty, itchy, red eyes after being out and about for more hours than usual on a dry, windy days. I think the wind was blowing in allergens from Wyoming and Montana. I take Zyrtec regularly but the allergies won that day. A prescription steroid lotion for around my eyes helps with the itchies, thank goodness.

Potato soup sounds delicious.

It is sunny, pouring, and 72 degrees outside. In November in New York. Glad I got the leaves taken care of yesterday.

Catman has slept through the return to standard time, as is his wont. Despite Weather Underground’s assertions to the contrary, it’s snowing now–fat, wet flakes. I’ve brought in some wood and I’ll be monitoring the Portland roads since I have a morning oncology appointment tomorrow.

According to Amazon my latest edits are live, but I’ll give it a few days for the paperback to catch up. I haven’t updated since spring because the formatting is a PITA for the hard version.

We’re having our first serious rainstorm of the season. Temperatures have turned colder. There will shortly be not the first, but one of the first, fires of the colder months.

I keep fairy lights strung on a stick-woven folding room divider that resides in a corner of my family room and adjacent to (but not too near) the wood burner. The lights started out as a backdrop to the annual Solstice Rake, my supremely lazy alternative to a holiday tree. I like the fairy lights so well I now leave them strung year round, because they are so cheering on a grey rainy day. Between the lights and a fire blazing away in the wood burner, the house is cozy and convivial, no matter what the weather is doing outside.

It’s been a busy couple of weeks around the old homestead. A very old friend came for a wonderful 5-day visit, then I went for a ladies’ (using the term exceedingly loosely) retreat with good friends at the coast. Much fun with both happenings.

I’ve read but not retained as much as I wish so will surely miss out on some important events of some Mumpers. Apologies for that. Still…

doggio, I’ve had weird ghostly-ish things occur in my life, but nothing current. My home of the past 18 years seems a very settled and staid place, from a “weird things” perspective.

Do add me to your list of drunken lawn trespassings. There’s a full liquor cabinet just waiting to be violated. I, too, have a weakness for Hendricks’ gin. It lives in the freezer, though.

shoe, Halloween is a non-event in my neck of the literal woods. I’ve kept a crisp $50 bill at the ready for the first intrepid little miscreant that makes their way down the long, dark spooky driveway, over the streams and around the ominous corners to the house that can’t been seen until you’re practically on top of it. The $50 is getting old and less crisp these days. Halloween used to be my favorite holiday, though.

And yes, goat is tasty! I love the silly critters, though, so I don’t eat it often.

Hope work is going better.

swampie, I appreciate your distinction between slob and sloth. We are of a similar mind. Tasks get done when they must be done – but why rush it?

MetalMouse, nice thing to do with your leftover treats at Halloween. Congrats on the debit card win! And good luck with the soccer matches. You’re a good ‘un to help as you do.

yankers, good luck with the distant ageing rellies. I struggle with the same issues. It’s tough. The ‘bloop’ story is fascinating. I’d have to find out.

FCM, sounds like your own struggles with FCD’s parents and brother are getting ironed out bit by bit, thanks to your organized and industrious approach. I hope things settle down with some finality soon and you can get back to your own pursuits! Roxy and Tobias are precious with their new haircuts.

I’m also looking forward to no more mid-term campaign ads. I mostly listen to calming music these days.

Sari, love the dog tales, but I agree with the others: It’s long past time to give Barky mom the heave-ho. You don’t need toxic people in your life. So cool to hear Cerby is making himself at home!

nellie, so glad the surgery went well and you’re on the mend! I’m sorry your former friend had to learn the hard way about COVID vaccines. I’ve experienced this with several people with whom I was formerly close. It’s hard to watch.

JtC, as ever, the GG/VBC stories are such fun. So sorry your hubs is suffering so for their antics! I hope hubs’s ribs heal fast so he can get back to laughing with wild abandon. And hot coffee on the girlz… I can relate to that one all too well. < wince > It wouldn’t make me give up coffee, though.

BooFae, it was thoughtful of you to attend your mother’s friend’s funeral and obviously a difficult challenge for obvious reasons. Nicely done.

Taters, I hope the super crud is finally done with you! Sorry for your unpleasant surprise in the den. Ugh. And extra scritches to Polar. (Not for the surprise, though.)

Flyboy, I’m glad the accident did so little damage. That’s enough excitement for one year, eh? As for cars that like to be hit, I had a Trans Am like that in my distant youth. A story for another day.

wetone, my reaction to the flu shot was much the same as yours. But it is nothing as compared to my reactions to the COVID vaccines, which are 4 days of misery for each. For this reason, I opted to have flu and COVID 10 days apart and no regrets. Had the pneumonia jab a couple days ago and no reaction whatsoever to that one. Vaccines is weird.

nettie, hope you’re feeling better soon! Glad it’s not COVID, at least.

BBBoo, what a lovely surprise! Have you figured out your chocolate benefactor yet?

oopsie, support groups can be wonderful, can’t they? I’m glad you found one that works for you, along with a new friend.

red, hope the mental health day and bike ride were splendid! Sounds like they were. I always loved those “stolen” days when I worked in more formal settings. Scary about the deadbolt and doubly so if it’s your only egress. I’m glad you were able to defeat it with screwdrivers and good news it is replaced.

kitap, glad you had some good news. Stay strong!

susan, loved the story about surprising your friend at her book reading, and big congrats on presenting at the conference. That’s quite a tribute!

ace, I can’t imagine a 3-hour hot flash. Glad that passed. Also good news that your daughter didn’t slice a tendon. Sounds like the whole ordeal was bad enough.

bumba, hope Tire Adventures are over with for the season! Stuff like that is so annoying. And I am sorry you lost your wonderful friend.

And now it’s goddam snowing! First I’ve heard of it. Nearly 3 inches have already accumulated. The fire is built and blazing. Good thing, too, because this is Power Outage Weather™. I’ve already gone out and knocked wet snow off a couple ornamental trees, filled extra water containers and ground some coffee ahead, just in case. If this crap keeps up, I won’t be able to get out of this place for an early morning auto maintenance appointment. Oh, darn.

Oh, and I dropped a Vitamin D caplet on the sofa, and in the 2 seconds it left my sight, it is now undetectable. I know how this story ends: With a greasy Vitamin D oil splotch somewhere on the sofa, difficult to remove, in a place I should have been able to find it with all the searching I did. Aarrgghh. MPSIMS enough for you?

Poor Shayna! I hope that the gunfire goes away soon ace.

Feel better soonest sari.

doggio, I’m wondering if Gordie and Nelson will swap tips on how to drive us batty. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve only ever lived three places with a dishwasher. It’s not too bad doing them by hand for one person and in one bedroom apartments that have notoriously small kitchens, I’d rather have the cabinet space.

I’m fixing to tidy up the last project’s mess in the studio before continuing the paying gig, but other than that, I’ll practice some sloth before bed.

I think that only works that way if somebody quotes you, at least that’s how it works for me. However, at the bottom of the thread there should be a button labeled ‘TRACKING’. Click on that and pick the first (WATCHING) or second (TRACKING) option. I think that will do it.
Also, yes goggles. I’ve been to the ER twice with foreign objects in my eyes. Ain’t fun.

I had a roommate in college 50 years ago who had a dishwasher, I/we haven’t had one since. Not because we don’t like them, but, like Red, we want/need the extra cabinet space.

I had a bad night last night. My hip was hurting way beyond the Acetaminophen’s ability to help. I alternated between aching and stabbing pain, and if I found a position that just ached, it would turn into stabbing pain after a while. I even tried sleeping in the big recliner, without success. Don’t know how much sleep I actually got. I may have to start looking up Orthos around here, or see if Wifey’s ortho in Portland accepts our new insurance.

Howdy Y’all! We deheathenated, had a really good first Sunday brunch, and overall a good time was had by all. The Baptism was sweet. She did not cry when water got poured on her head, but had an epic melt down durin’ brunch. She’s a toddler and that’s what toddlers do. I am sure she was really tired, the poor thing. Also Interim Priest did a summary presentation of the listenin’ forums he held durin’ October. ‘Twas innerestin’ to hear what folks are feelin’ and what and what not is good right now. I really like him. He’s in his forties, so, while still a whippersnapper, we click well together.

In other news, we achieved nappage, did some day drinkin’, and the biiiiiiiiig trash can has been hauled all the way down to the road for pickup tomorrow. It shall be dark around six o’clock, which is fine by me cause we are in for the evenin’.

Everybody have a good night. Catch y’all in the next MMP!
