I’m reasonably sure it was not erectile dysfunction.
The timing of this shit actually screams, “Let’s get this over with so I can be ready for the Masters.”
Tiger will play a warm up tournament and then play the Masters.
That’s because there is no non-snicker-inducing way to say “sex addiction”.
Does anyone think sex addiction is a real condition and that Tiger has it?
I think that it can be a real compulsive disorder. I don’t know if Tiger has it. I also don’t know what it would be like to constantly have smoking hot women coming on to me everywhere I go every day of my life, so it’s kind of hard to be that judgemental. It might well be that he’s just a normal guy who has temptations that most of us don’t.
It’s funny that no one thinks anything about rock stars doing this, even if they’re married.
Sex, drugs, and being in the final group on Sunday.
Nah… doesn’t have quite the right ring to it.
I’m a bit surprised Tiger has gotten so much attention and taken so much heat, because unlike some athletes, he’s NEVER made the slightest attempt to act like a nice guy, to pose as a positive role model, or to connect emotionally with his fans.
To put it another way…
If Tim Tebow were caught going to prostitutes or Kurt Warner were screwing around with IHOP waitresses, a lot of their biggest fans would be hurt, because those guys built their image around being good Christians and supporters of traditional family values. If they got caught doing what Tiger did, much of what people admired them for would be lost forever.
Joe Dimaggio embodied class in public. Privately, he was a vindictive prick without a true friend in the world. If his fans had known what he was really like, they’d have been hurt. Those fans were embracing him for his classy image as much as his athletic stature. Take away that classy image, and there’s a lot less to admire.
If Sting is secretly a polluter, if Bono is secretly a racist, if Bruce Springsteen is secretly living in the lap of luxury and giving almost nothing to charity, well, something dear would be lost, to their fans, because those guys are admired for what they symbolize as much as for the music they make.
But back to Tiger… what has this guy EVER stood for besides great golf?
Did people love him for his charm or wit? No, because he never showed those things to his fans. Did they love him for his humanitarianism? No, because he never showed himself to be generous or caring (maybe he IS, but he never tried to show that side of him to the public). Did they love him for his warmth and graciousness and good sportsmanship? No, because he was always icy and distant to fans.
So, if fans loved him, it was SOLELY, 100% because he was the greatest golfer in the world.
Well, he still is. So, if you loved him 6 months ago, I think that was silly and irrational… but I can’t think of a single good reason you shouldn’t still love him now.
the rehab could be for addiction to prescription drugs. Allegedly, Elin gave the paramedics bottles of ambien and vicodin when they took him to the hospital.
Tiger said he didn’t take PEDs but he said nothing about other prescription drugs that are not PEDs.
astorian, do you think Tiger was paid Tens of millions of dollars to sponsor clothes, golf clubs, automobiles, sport drinks, watches, etc. because of a negative public perception?
No, but I don’t think Nike gave him that money thinking, “People will buy our gear because he’s a wholesome, boy next door.”
Rather, they thought “Tiger is the most phenomenal golfer ever, and people will buy the gear he endorses in the vain hope that they could play like Tiger if they used the same clubs/balls/whatever he does.”
Eddie Van Halen could be a creep, but even so, if he announced “This is the best brand of guitar strings in the world,” people would listen. Tiger is to golf as Eddie Van Halen is to rock guitar. Whether they like him or hate him, people say, “That guy can do incredible things… I’D sure like to be able to do what he does!!!”
You’ve explained golf clubs, what about Buick, Tag Heuer, Accenture, ATT?
Buick thinks Tiger is a great driver? I think he misses too many fairways.
But he gets more endorsement money from non-golf related items. And noticed which type of sponsors dropped him.
He cannot even find the road right outside his house.
For the record, I would be a sex addict too if I could find that many good looking women to sleep with me without my wife finding out. Of course, when she found out, shit hit the fan… but until then, what a ride!
All hail Tiger!
Sex addict… what a joke. That’s like fat people being food addicts.
Yeah, I asked about the “condition” being treated, after looking in the DSM and failing to see Sex addiction. Which would suggest to me that his hosing is actually a symptoms/manifestation of some other personality disorder.
I’m surprised that anyone would truly question that Tiger and his team have put tremendous effort into creating an image that is more than just a successful golfer. The most talented athlete in every sport does not necessarily gain the most endorsement dollars.
Clinics like those are for cover. Instead of a horn dog he is a person with an addiction, powerless to refuse to have sex with beautiful women who will do anything for him. It is not his fault. you have to cut an addict some slack. A horny rich guy, not so much. After he serves his time getting help, you have to forgive him .
Oh, Christ, the guy doesn’t owe you, me, or anyone outside his family a freakin’ apology. Don’t like it? Tough shit - it’s more than you (and the rest of us) deserves in the first place.
There’s a good opinion piece at Sports Illustrated where the writer says the following:
He didn’t mislead you. He never promised you that he wouldn’t cheat on his wife. So why is it important that he apologizes for something that isn’t our damned business in the first place?
I don’t care one way or another. But people arguing that Tiger has never sold his image is foolish. He clearly did. For example, Accenture dropped him almost immediately because the “Go on, be a Tiger” campaign was 100% purely based on his image as someone you should aspire to be. Tag Hauer apparently based their Tiger campaign on the slogan “What are you made of?” Again, pure image.
Denying this smacks of apologist rhetoric.
Tiger had one and only one reason to apologize: To rehabilitate his image for the sake of corporate sponsorships. This is likely what the skeptics find so distasteful.
As for the paparazzi following his wife and kids, that’s what happens when you hide from them for months. Man up and answer the questions. This isn’t blaming the victim at all. Tiger is not a victim, he’s the guilty party. Don’t the paparazzi’s kids deserve to eat too?
