Tony Snow dies.

Bolding mine. It’s worth pointing out that if our press were truly doing its job, journalists would accept these claims with skepticism and investigate them deeply. That has been happening less with Bush’s press conferences than under any other president I’m aware of. Snow’s job was perhaps not one that an honorable (or honest) man would take, true, but a more vigilant press wouldn’t have allowed him and the administation to get away with as much as they have.

Must resist temptation to Godwinize thread. Must resist it. Must resist. Must.

Look, there are just some times you enjoy someone’s terrible news. We all draw that line in different places, but there are some people who are so irreemably evil, such deep sources of suffering for their fellow man, such tools of demonic awfulness that some of us can longer resist gloating at their undignified passing. . I don’t tell you you have to gloat with me. But let me gloat in peace, please. I ain’t hurting you, am I?

All I have to say is it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy, okay? I’m enjoying the moment.

But if he doesn’t care what other people think, what is the point of posting his nasty opinion? Is he talking to himself?

No, really, don’t bother. Your hatred doesn’t mean anything any more. You’ve heaped so much of it upon every person, cause, or idea that is different from your own for the past several years that it’s just a bland backwash now. All you have left to spew is the last sip of a flat, warm Pepsi.

Well, not anything unnatural, but if God sees fit to strike Sean Hannity a flesh eating virus I might start going back to mass.

Yes. I repeat, no. Try as we will, there are no such absolutes, it wouldn’t take you much time to find at least one example of someone who had canceled their privilege for humane consideration. Nor would it take me long to imagine a circumstance when I might come to his aid, despise him as I do. Its never cut-and-dried, all these judgements are grey.

I think Mr Snow’s behavior was despicable, but if he were on trial, I would not favor a death penalty, because that would degrade me. I intone a pious lecture to Diogenes not because I have respect for Mr Snow, but because I respect Diogenes. My feeling (and that’s all it is) is that Mr Snow is not as worthy a subject for disdain and contempt as, say, Jesse Helms. But that is only my feeling, it has no basis other than that. I strive to avoid hatred because of what it does to me, it does nothing whatever to them. And that is reason enough.

And if I really believed that my words would somehow find their way to his family, I would surely deliver lofty hypocrisy as words of comfort. And if that is wrong, well, fuck me.

Do try and make this personal, if you can, it will surely improve the tone.

On the contrary, I think the press is more powerful and investigative than ever before, and more skeptical. The press reports what a guy like Snow says at the behest of his boss, the President, but it doesn’t mean that they or we have to believe it. The press has to repeat what he says, it’s their job.

And as far as the honesty thing goes…that’s politics for you.

No way. Seriously?

Re: Snow fall. What a horrible way to die! I wouldn’t have wished that on him. But I’m not sad about it one bit, no, not a single mote.

Whatever his role as ‘just the mouthpiece’ he was part of the propaganda arm of the Administration Which Shall Not Be Named, and we KNOW what that entails.

Lord Haw-Haw has died? Pass the beer.

C’mon, he was a press secretary, not the Mouth of Sauron.

In the cases of Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly, only agonizing enough to make them have death bed conversions upon realizing the error of their lives.

Personally, I’d prefer they happen to stumble upon the Board, and, stunned by the crystalline clarity of my reason, did the ol’ one-eighty. Not that I’d be smug about it, mind you. Probably never mention it. Very often.

He worked for Fox, too.

That may not make him the Mouth of Sauron, but it qualifies him as at least a Tooth.

Or perhaps “mouth” isn’t the precise orifice.

Why shouldn’t it be personal? If DtC actually feels that way, and is not simply trolling, he has emerged as one of the most disgusting people I’ve ever encountered on this board. He’s always been one of the most opinionated and hard-headed, but this? This is disgusting. To rejoice that a fellow human being suffered a painful death, and to desire that others do the same? Disgusting.

The Helms thread and this one are fucking disgusting.

OK, so there is no one, at any time, for any reason, worthy of this sort of treatment? Not ever?

(Harumph! Typical of the mods, trying to stifle leftie opinions…)

Should I find the thread where Dopers rejoiced over the killing of Saddam Hussein’s sons?

Not all deaths are tragic, man. Sometimes the dead guy was an asshole.

You'd be surprised, but your rancour here is not helping. Seems to say more about you than Snow.

I can understand, to some extent, a feeling of gladness that an evil person in a position to advance his/her evilness is no longer around to do so, and will feel the same, to some extent. I do not - nor will I ever - understand rejoicing in a painful and horrible death of someone who is simply on a different side of the political spectrum.

I’ll be relieved for the people of Zimbabwe when Mugabe dies; I do not wish him the sort of death that Samuel Doe of Liberia suffered. I hope that Nixon had a clean and painless death; I’ll still piss on his grave if opportunity knocks.

Is that more clear, or just confusing?

May I opine that I’m glad Genghis Khan is dead, the dirty, murderous bastard? I don’t know how he died (actually, I don’t know that he died, but it’s a good guess)–I sure hope it was painful and lengthy, giving him plenty of agonizing time to think about all the folks he killed, and why that wasn’t a good way for him to have spent his life.

How disgusting am I being? You can tell me. Just plain disgusting? Fucking disgusting? Really, over-the-top fucking disgusting?
