bj0rn: you’re very welcome - I enjoy your posts tremendously, particularly in this context… I hope you will carry on for as long as it gives you amusement to do so

Coldfire: as you say, yes, I’m disagreeing with you, no, I didn’t particularly set out to attack you - I must get into the habit of editing before posting, not thinking about it afterwards… However, since I did post it, I am obliged to explain it:

“Wankies” was a term briefly in use here in the late 80s to describe Brits who went too far in trying to assimilate US culture (wankies <> Yankees, Rouss - it rhymes - clever, isn’t it?); they ended up becoming sycophants of, and bad imitations of, Americans - “mock-Americans”, in fact - like “mock-turtle” - “mock” in this context = fake, sham. The point of the remark was this: You can say what you like about bj0rn for as long as you like, although as I hope I’ve made clear, I think you’re dead wrong; BUT in going so far as to apologise on behalf of Europe* to a mostly American public, entirely unnecessarily, you lose balance and hurtle towards “wankiedom” - ie, you demean both yourself, which is your prerogative, if their good opinion is so important to you that you feel you need to do this, and the rest of Europe, which is very much not your prerogative at all. To bring me back to my last post, you do not speak for me, and it annoys me that you seem to imply that you can apologise on my behalf (as a European) for sth that needs no apology to begin with. I hope that clarifies it. I do not especially insist on the precise wording, but I do stand by the concept.

(*and I can’t find the message offhand but I know it’s not far away…)

I did not intend to have a go at you particularly, and I have read lots of your previous posts with enjoyment, but on this one point you go too far.

For the rest, no, of course I’m not bj0rn - can’t you tell a native speaker? I use capitals correctly, and my English is so good that Rousseau doesn’t even know half the words - buy (borrow, steal) a dictionary, sonshine… although you wd have to learn the alphabet to use it…

And I figured out that you were bj0rn when you used the word sycophant. Oh well, just a hypothesis that didn’t pan out. I guess an apology is in order, since accusing someone of being bj0rn is just about as bad an insult as you can get around here. You have to admit, though, that that first post was most definetly bj0rn-ish.

Other European guy states, maybe unnecessarily, that first guy is certainly not a representative example of the entire continent (yeah, it DOES matter what some people on these MB’s think of me, and I would not be ashamed to post an ignorance-disclaimer as described here). By no means does he claim to represent every European poster on this board, let alone the continent of Europe as a whole.

Third guy, first incomprehensibly, then more elaborated, states that he sure as hell does not need people to defend him from the opinion of American or any other posters on this board. As was already easily deductable from the previous posts by the second European poster.

Third European guy turns out to be a Limey. Figures :slight_smile:

Seems to me you’re basically explaining to everyone that you don’t want to be considered as part of the European continent per se.

Do you understand that our language has rules? I know that you speak Viking over there in Iceland, and I’m not sure if your language has any rules, but ours does. And you seem hell-bent on disobeying EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM.

You obviously missed the point of the quote that you quoted. Not that I expect you to understand things like that, but whatever. Socrates was referring to writing in the artistic form, like poetry or prose. Here at the SDMB, we are trying to share ideas in the most comprehendable, while still eloquent, manner possible. The writing in this forum has exactly nil to do with painting. Our goal here is to understand and to be understood. Making up words and ignoring grammer rules most certainly impedes this, wouldn’t ya say?
The point is that we are trying to communicate ideas here over a written forum. It follows therefore that proper grammer and real words are kind of essential. Maybe you can take your posts to a poetry board, and see what they make of it. Who knows, they may understand you.

But as for the SDMB, until you start obeying the rules of our written language, you are going to find it very difficult to be taken seriously.

And until you stop pissing people off, you are going to find it very hard to drag your Icelandic ass out of the Pit.

Rousseau: don’t apologise - as a pro-bj0rnite, I took it as a compliment - and yes, it was a word, wasn’t it?

Coldfire - gone on to better things, presumably, since I see we now have a Coldfire/bj0rn thread head-to-head - great stuff. I’ll be off there directly, but for the record, so as not to look as if I slunk off under cover of dark, the following (briefly):
yes, what the heck, I’ll be the wankie - what does it matter? I think it’s a good word, and I may even include it in a new name - omni-not has made over “Brad”(thank-you thank-you) so Durno-Brad-the-Limey-Wankie-anus cd well be on the cards - hell, I’ve got taste…

For the rest, I thought I had a good point - and if I practise long and hard, one day I will not only have a good point, I’ll even manage to put it across in such a way that other people see what it is too.

And now, off to my present third*-favourite occupation, watching Coldfire being irritated…

rousseau: i dont want to get into a philosophical debate here in the pit. but let me tell you that your view of phaedrus is very narrow-minded. if not wrong.

i have also pointed out that this is not my native language. so you cant yell at me for doing it wrong. you can correct me. but that isnt what you are doing.

I really hate to say this, but I think I’ll have to nominate Phaedrus as Troll du jour. I gave him the benefit of the doubt for a long while, and defended him more than once. But I am now thoroughly of the opinion that he is posting simply to stroke his own ego and watch people get angry at his solipsistic and deliberately inflammatory posts.

This is the first and hopefully the last thing I’ll post in the Pit about him.

  1. If “self-opinionated” is a word, please provide a dictionary definition, with cite.

  2. “Self-appointed” is an adjective. You cannot call someone “a self-appointed”; you need to have a noun “a self-appointed _____”.

You have done rather well, learning those punctuation marks that exist only in English, but you still have some work to do in regards to learning those capital letters that exist only in English.

It is a phonetical spelling of a dialectal pronunciation of the word “you”. These things (phonetical spelling, dialects and different pronunciations) are more things that exist only in English.

Please excuse me now, I must say 50 "Hail Cecil"s for having responded to the bj0rn. It won’t happen again.

There’s a difference between spelling one word in a post phonetically and misspelling four our of every five words in a post because you’re too lazy to make your post comprehensible.

That should be “four out of five”. And before the bj0rn has a happy fit, there’s also a difference between one typo in a post and misspelling 80% of the words in a post.
