Not specifically him in that case. But, just so there is no confusion, Riemann is an asshole too.
It’s not patronizing someone to not kick them when you know they are down. And I very much argue it’s not reasonable to expect someone who is in psychological distress to be able to think to ask you to stop, or even think you would listen if they did. It’s still pretty clear from how he has responded that he’d rather you stop.
And, @Sunny_Daze I know from direct experience that the people who were willing to kick me when I was down did not forget my reactions. I had a similar break, and it completely changed how everyone treated me for years. Sure, some people were sympathetic but they were the minority for a long while. And a lot of people never seemed to change their mind: they just left.
You (SD) are even calling the guy a “white knight,” a term originally used to attack those who dared defend women from misogyny, saying they’d only do so because they wanted to fuck them. (It may have been true in some minority of cases, but that was rare.) Now it is most often an attack on anyone who dares think someone is being mistreated and defends them.
Since that’s the right thing to do, it function like “SJW,” a snarl word, and is why @mordecaiB spoke of them in the same breath. And, like that “SJW,” snarl words aren’t going to convince us that we’re wrong, but be worn as a badge of honor. They’re used primarily when people can’t actually find a reason that we’re actually wrong.
I know, I know. I’m starting to lecture. I try my best not to, but I still have a line where things go too far. And this hits way, way too close to home. Don’t read this as me judging people, but making a passionate case against what you guys are saying.
I do actually think @mordecaiB was a bit harsh at first, as bringing up someone in this thread doesn’t mean you actually think they are a troll, and the person who brought it up had pulled back on that claim. On the other hand, @mordecaiB’s reaction shows empathy, and I am loathe to tell people they are wrong for that. Empathy means you may lash out a bit when you see someone you think is being mistreated. You feel what they feel, even if to a lesser extent.
I will respectfully ask that other posters do not take what I said out of context. Again, nothing in my post is intended to attack anyone. It’s all just a reply to arguments I disagree with, and expressing my own emotions.
That said, don’t be surprised if I bow out of this thread for a while. As I’ve told SD in the past, sometimes I just bow out of threads because they start hitting me too hard emotionally. I figure that anyone’s counterargument will stand or fall on its own.
Did you even read what I wrote in the other thread? How about what he wrote? He’s responding with snark and holding his own.
If you don’t like this thread, no one’s forcing you to be here
And no ones forcing you to be an asshole. Seems like you are the one that can’t let it go or has to have the last word. And I’ll read any fucking thread I want. Unlike you, I don’t fucking insist people agree with me on everything in every fucking thread or they should get the fuck out. Why, that’s almost like junior modding, except with no acronyms. Why the fuck would I want to read a thread where a bunch of assholes are picking on somebody. It may be your thing but that’s your problem. You should probably deal with it now rather than coming back later and asking for help.
Maybe you should start a ATMB thread proposing your genius idea to let people be assholes to someone for as long as they want and then have them come back and ask for help from the people that inflicted the hurt on them in the first place. How would you like if that was the rule for misogyny or racial insults? Hell, they are big boys and girls, they can take it. Then later they can come back and ask the misogynists and racists for help. Who even comes up with the idea to hurt someone so you can help them later? Your priorities are fucked up.
I can’t tell yet whether davemabus2021 is a harmless crackpot or spamming nutjob
I’ll settle for “useless troll”. Those types are never “harmless” because they are at least a waste of space and bandwidth, especially a serial poster like this one who doesn’t understand how message board software works. He’s probably fried on drugs, too.
David Mabus is a pseudonym of notorious crazy person Dennis Markuze. He shows up on here periodically.
Looks like whatever thread that link went to has been cornfielded.

Jeez, the guy doesn’t like acronyms, it’s not like he fucked your mom or kicked your dog.
Wait wait wait wait… it’s kick the dog? I got it all switched around.
Shit.

He’s responding with snark and holding his own.

Wait wait wait wait… it’s kick the dog? I got it all switched around.
Yeah, I’m guessing today’s a good pain day for him.

bringing up someone in this thread doesn’t mean you actually think they are a troll
…and sometimes it does. ILMVI has shown that they are, in fact, a troll about this. This thread is very much the right place for talking about that.
Something peculiar. Threads started today or very recently from a certain poster (not nothing) first locked and then disappearing before my eyes. But not all of them, two are/were left, maybe because they’ve been around longer and have traction. But no public notifications so far. Maybe there won’t be any. Maybe it’s none of my business. From what I saw of the disappeared threads, there wasn’t anything there that I would miss.

not nothing
So, maybe a hole?
That user is suspended until Jun 4, 2021 11:32 pm.

Something peculiar.
Clever.
But not particularly peculiar. A new user starting lots and lots of threads while barely coming back to them. He’s getting a time out to get a feel for the culture of the SDMB.
Totally unconscious, not an attempt to be clever. Just for the record.
As for “peculiar” I’ve never seen it happen in real time before, threads disappearing before my eyes.
From the “Someone on the Internet is Wrong” Files:
If you want to make the point that facts are more important than morals, don’t post a stupid fucking political meme with a factually incorrect quote.
Moron.
It now says “Sock Account” and that the account is suspended but not for how long. If they have that much information, why is it not insta-banned, I wonder?
We don’t generally make announcements about sock accounts. If you see Sock Account, it also means banned. {I just changed the title to “Banned Sock”.
I believe that Discourse uses different terminology, and that “Suspended” is the catch-all term for “no longer here.”

It now says “Sock Account” and that the account is suspended but not for how long. If they have that much information, why is it not insta-banned, I wonder?
It takes a little time to do this stuff. The account was banned (suspended) fairly quickly.
