He was fun to torture.
Interestingly, although I did not agree with much of what he said, and thought he responded way too much…
This kind of attitude here frankly disgusted me. Yes, you folks did find it “fun” to torture him. And it reflected poorly on you.
Reminded me of a grade 10 class once upon a time. There was a kid there who was clearly very smart. But also painfully socially awkward. And was just trying to fit in. The other kids thought it was fun to torture him too.
It did not end well. I hope you (and they) can sleep at night.
There was some of that. True enough.
Yes, but @SlackerInc was clearly not very smart.
It’s also time we quit excusing assholes as being “socially awkward”, especially adults.
Yea, actually he was. But smart does not translate well into dealing with people.
No, he really wasn’t. He was occasionally clever and clearly very motivated, but that’s not the same thing.
Somebody once told me the most important attribute for getting a PhD was not intelligence but perseverance, and he was a prime example of that principle.
Whatever. The whole thing reflected poorly on everyone.
In the spirit of SlackerInc, I blame the Jews and Muslims for his untimely banning.
Yeah, that’s the thing.
Play “holier than thou” if you want, but, plain and simple, the man was a bigot who played at not being a bigot. And tried to science his way to excusing those beliefs. He argued at length about why blacks inherently had inferior intelligence while arguing that did not make him a racist.
That’s not social dysfunction. That’s a privileged asshole getting away with it for too long. I’m not going to blame most posters for loudly calling him out for repeatedly and publicly shitting in the pool.
Being somewhere on the Autism spectrum, I’m socially awkward. Slacker, at least his on-board persona, is a fucking jerk.
Don’t forget us ball-busting feminazis.
Well, I don’t think he should have been banned for trolling. That ATMB thread was a disaster, and everyone was dumping on him, in very non-ATMB ways. Maybe a fifth of the posts in that thread were appropriate for ATMB. I guess he lost his temper in a now-hidden post, but he really took a lot of shit in that thread and lots of warnings could have been given out.
I didn’t love him has a poster, but he definitely added more value than Velocity, urbanredneck2, and, of course, aceplace57. And, don’t get me started on octopus! The eight-legged one is much worse than he was just a few years ago – he’s gone off the deep end.
For anti-PC-type posters, he was more interesting that DemonTree. You can’t have a conversation with Kearsen1 because he’ll just twist anything you say into something unrecognizable. Was he racist? Maybe. Not as racist as damuriajashi or puddleglum, who hide behind accusations of inferior culture to hide their racism.
So, whatever, I guess.
SlackerInc and I had a long argument in the Pit once because he said women who are raped have a moral obligation not to tell anyone since we need to protect the reputation of the rapist. I invested a great deal of effort into helping him understand how damaging that view is to victims of sexual assault. He never backed down and I never forgave him for that. It stands out in my memory as one of the worst exchanges I’ve ever had on this board.
I could give a shit less about his intelligence and whether or not he is socially awkward is irrelevant to me. I have a long history of attracting and befriending socially awkward people. I’m not exactly miss social butterfly myself.
This is a dude who told me, yeah, you were sexually abused, but you should have shut up about it.
I’m not going to spend emotional energy feeling sorry for him.
I work with an awful lot of those kids. You do your classmate a disservice by using him to justify Slacker’s misogyny, bigotry, and general skeeviness.
Indeed. I’m pretty “socially awkward” too, but somehow I manage not to be a racist and a misogynist.
Yep. As I said in what would prove to be his last burst of activity in his dedicated pit thread, I would occasionally stop and wonder if maybe I was being unfair. But then he’d post something and remind me I wasn’t.
I grudgingly agree with this. I’m surprised he was banned. But am I really going to go to bat for someone with so little regard for the people he hurts? Unlikely.
Well, that’s as far as I’m going for him, so if it was a swing and a miss, that was my only chance at the plate, to push the “going to bat for him” analogy to its breaking point.
Uh oh, octopus is coming in! Get your bullshit boots on!
Hey! I don’t agree with a lot of folks here but the banning of slacker much like some of the other bannings/warnings are clearly the results of double standards. About going to bat for folks, if it’s the right thing it’s the right thing. Will it make a difference? Of course not.
And no I haven’t gone off the deep end. It’s just that I see more and more affinity for ideological conformity enforced by violence and ostracism and I think that’s the opposite of progressive.
How amusing, Interestingly enough, slacker can quote directly from a religious text which is accurate and be banned for trolling and you can post whatever baseless slander you wish with no repercussion.
