I think what happened is that law enforcement basically backed off and let them overrun the physical space with little physical resistance at all, through some initial combination of collusion and incompetence; and then through simply being overrun and outnumbered. So until that point, the rioters had met with no physical resistance at all, and all the bravado and adrenaline were running high.
But the security details tasked specifically with protecting the people in the building had drawn a line at that door, and had people they were protecting behind it. Their rules of engagement are rather different, and she found that out the hard way. But you’re right, as much as anyone in that mob she had the experience to know that.
If the reports of numerous verbal warnings at that door were correct, quite frankly she got exactly what she should have expected, and indeed what she deserved.
I don’t see how a person, let alone a president, can pardon himself; a pardon typically involves two people. A president pardoning himself essentially grants himself blanket immunity, which seems like the kind of regal power that the Americans were trying to get away from.
Just my 2 cents on the situation where the USAF veteran got shot. Multiple explicit warnings, guns pointed etc. = stupendous stupidity.
But in addition, it seems clear to me that if the security hadn’t taken the climbing woman down when they did, in literally two seconds there would have been not one but five or so insurgents on the other side of the barricade, and a moment later as many as could fit there, barreling forward. Shooting was an absolutely necessary action, after stern warnings had zero effect.
The bizarre thing about commentary on this woman being shot is that the U.S. quite justifiably has a terrible reputation for excessive police violence. But people are second guessing whether shooting this woman under these circumstances was justified? When she and a riotous mob behind her that outnumbered law enforcement were one door and perhaps 50 feet away from members of the elected government who were hiding in fear of their lives?
If a mob that outnumbered law enforcement had broken into the U.K. parliament, or done the same in Germany, even in socialist Scandinavia, I have aboslutely no doubt that they would all have been taken down with lethal force, and probably well before they got anywhere near that close.
I saw quite a bit of pepper spray being deployed, some at the barricades, more at the doors. Most of the problem seems to have been the CP on duty were badly out-numbered. Most attempted to do their duty, and I don’t blame any of the ones who decided discretion was the better part of valor.
So there’s reasonable cause to believe one of the CP was killed/murdered by a blow from a fire extinguisher. My very limited understanding of law (though I’ve seen this apply to POCs peripherally involved in a murder - driver) is that all participating or planning can be charged as an accomplice. I also believe (again limited knowledge) that all these crimes committed in the building are Federal crimes. I think we are talking manslaughter at the least in the case of the CP death.
The fbi went into the capital around 6ish. I’m reckoning that they would take custody of anything that was collected. They cleared out the chambers and cleaned them before they resumed around 8. They will have photos and video of the various crime scenes.
Interesting bit from that article:
“Also charged Friday in connection with the rioting at the Capitol was a state lawmaker from West Virginia, Republican Del. Derrick Evans, who had recorded and then deleted a video of himself joining the throng. A petition has been started for him to step down.”
