No, DEATH is the only way to stop a serial killer. If he escapes or gets released, he will kill again. Ask Bundy’s last victims. Oh wait, you can’t…he killed them AFTER escaping from prison.
I daresay the police didn’t handcuff him hoping he would try something and they would have an excuse to kill his sorry ass.
I’ve no doubt he’s going to claim he was deliberately framed, probably pointing to the fact that “All the evidence was against me as if I was trying to get caught what with the body in my room and all, and if you know anything about me you’ll know getting rid of bodies is something I do good!”, but I wonder if he’ll claim the Holloways were in on the framing.
On his own personal website Joran is reputed to have made references to using date rape drugs to get girls. (ETA: I think it was actually that he and his two buddies that employed the tactic, not just him).
So when he later did the “confession” in which he said she had some kind of seizure and died, the theory was that she had been given a date rape drug and it killed her. NOne of this can be substantiated without a body.
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. Maybe it started when he picked up a girl in a bar, and he wanted to get laid but she didn’t, and he forced himself on her. Or maybe he just fell in with a bad crowd that enjoyed preying on Spring Break girls. Either way, I’d bet his dad was protecting him, leaning on the police and prosecutors to keep things quiet.
A profiler on Today this morning said that she believes he is not a serial killer, but rather a serial rapist with a rage problem. She thinks that both Natalie and this new girl fought back hard against him, which is why they were killed. This second girl was brutally over-killed, with beating, strangulation, and stabbing, which indicates that he was incredibly angry that she was fighting back, and, it being exactly five years to the day since Natalie died, he was NOT going to let her get away with that.
I have a feeling that his new friends in Peruvian prison will help him “get in touch” with his feelings of rage and educate him about the traumatic effects of sexual violence…
If people end up dead at your hands, then you are a murderer. If she wants to call him a serial rapist in addition to being a serial murderer, then I’d sign on to that. But a serial rapist who just happens to kill people in a rage? Not sure I get the distinction.
IANA Criminal Psychologist, but I would assume the difference is that a serial rapist rapes a lot more people than he kills and that the killing is not usually premeditated, whereas to a serial killer the killing is the whole point of the act. Not that I’m defending one against the other and frankly I’d be more likely to support the death penalty against a serial rapist than a one time “heat of passion” murderer as I think the latter has a better chance of being rehabilitated to a degree; the murdered victims are just as dead whether they’re the only one the rapist ever killed or the 400th. If the profile is accurate however van der Sloot probably has a lot more victims out there than the two dead girls he [allegedly*] killed, some of whom may not even recognize him as their rapist due to the GHB he allegedly uses which not only disorients but has amnesiac effects of events that occur while you’re under its influence.
On the news today they said several people from the Dutch embassies in Chile and Peru had gone to see him in his cell. I wonder out of curiosity what that’s about.
*I say allegedly because he hasn’t been found guilty of being anything but an asshole and narcissist. I personally think he’s also a murderer but I’ll call him alleged murderer just in case any Dopers move to Lima and become jurors. Specifically I think he was probably telling the truth when he said that Holloway died as a result of the drugs he slipped her and he disposed of the body.
There is at least one organizationdedicated to the allowing of Dutch prisoners in Peru to serve their sentences in the Netherlands. Not surprisingly most Dutch subjects arrested there are involved in drug smuggling. Since V.D. Slut is going to be extremely high profile but at the same point not somebody capable of being spun as a desperate student trying for a quick and easy $5000 it will be interesting to see if they champion him or drop him like a glowing horse shoe.
She’s using a very narrow definition of serial killer; someone who kills with premeditation for sadistic sexual gratification, i.e. a sexually motivated murderer. That definition doesn’t always fit people we typically speak of as serial killers - Charles Sobhraj was a serial killer who killed for financial gain rather than sexual pleasure. She could be right that Van der Sloot is a serial rapist who kills in a rage afterwards, but there’s a pretty strong argument that that pretty much makes you a serial killer.
It’s not completely uncommon for prisoners to be transferred to their home country to serve their sentences. Not usual, but not unusual either–somewhere in the middle. After all, when the imprisoning country releases the prisoner, he/she is just going to get deported anyway. Admittedly, when it does happen, it’s mostly not when the prisoner is a murderer.
There was a lot of tv coverage on Aruba. Greta Van Susteren had coverage every night for several weeks. The Natalee Holloway story was everywhere.
The news story I remember was general background on Aruba’s party scene. Tourist girls were targeted because the chance of them filing charges was slim. They had planes to catch home and were reluctant to spend extra time in Aruba following through on a criminal complaint.
Joran and his buddies allegedly used alcohol and drugs to take advantage of a lot of tourist girls. It’s hard to prove since no charges were filed. What’s the boundary between seduction and rape? These girls were only in Aruba for a few days. Sooner or later a tragic situation like Natalee was bound to happen.
I believe the initial reports out of Peru stated that date rape drugs were found in the room with the dead girl. Not sure if that’s been confirmed or retracted.
