I’m thankful there won’t be a trial here. Our wonderful news people would focus on Joran 24/7. It would be another circus like the OJ trial.
Sounds like there is a strong murder case in Peru. That’s the trial that’s important. The extortion case here in the U.S. will have to wait. Hopefully, Joran will rot in Peru for the next 30 years.
They’ve never been able to get this guy for Natalee. It’s a shame it took another victim to make a case against Joran.

A few years back an acquaintance of mine got a thirty year sentence in Peru. He died six or seven years into it. The Lurigancho Prison in Lima, where he served, was basically a walled in town, where inmates were left to fend for themselves. At the time, it was dominated by the Sendero Luminoso. I wouldn’t know if that was still the case.
The Netherlands has no extradition treaty with Peru which is the reason that most people end up serving long, long stints for drug smuggling there instead of in NL - a fate which likely awaits Van der Sloot too.
I have followed this story on the Dutch end of things fairly extensively and this I have not heard. I don’t put it past him but at the same time I wouldn’t put too much stock in what Van Susteren has to say - I think she is more interested in sensation and ratings than in the truth. She has failed repeatedly in her coverage of this entire case.
What kind of civil liberties protections does Van der Sloot have in Peru against self-incrimination? Is it anything like America, or can we expect that the Peruvian authorities are beating the ever-loving bejebus out of him until he confesses to both murders?
As if this whole thing wasn’t weird enough already, Yahoo News says:
Outside, seven Indian shamans in brightly colored ponchos repeatedly stabbed a cloth doll representing van der Sloot in a “spiritual punishment” ritual. “We’re punishing him so that all the forces of evil are purged,” one shouted.

National Geographic channel has a series called “Locked Up Abroad” which is a must-see for anyone who’s considering smuggling drugs or doing anything else illegal in another country, especially a Third World one. Oy.
The ep on Peru showed two young women who were sent to prison for drug smuggling. The women’s prison was certainly no picnic, but I’ll bet the men’s prisons there are exponentially worse.
JVDS looks a lot older than 22 to me. He looks puffy and bloated, like some old alcoholic party boy. Which apparently he is.
From what I read about Peruvian jails, they will will be a perfect match for der Slut. Guards on the outside to keep the prisoners in. Inside the prisoners run everything. Seems to be a lot like an “Escape From New York” type society. If the prisoner has money he can get along pretty well. No money,a pretty miserable life. I hope der Slut has all his money taken from him.
Nah. He’s too well known for the Peruvians to allow harm to come to him. Were he some anonymous Dutch kid, he might be getting the rubber hose treatment. But when the world (or even part of the world) has its eye on you, you put on your best behavior. In other words, he’s probably getting treated far, far better than any of the other inmates.

The Peruvians have made available hotel security tapes of Joran and the girl entering the hotel, and him leaving three hours later, alone, with a sports bag. Interesting footage.
On paper, Peruvian law forbids torture. Now as to whether he has accidentally fallen down a flight of stairs . . .
The Peruvian criminal justice system is based on the Napoleonic Code, not English common law. There are some comments about the system and about prisons in this State Department report.

Makes me wonder what went wrong in that room. Reports say she was hit with a baseball bat. That’s a rage crime. Joran must have flipped out.
The security cameras will easily disprove Joran’s claim that the girl was ok when he left. If anyone else entered that room, then they’ll be on the security tape too.
