So, I booked my hotel and made my flight reservations. I will be staying at the Town and Country Resort on 500 Hotel Circle in San Diego. Now, I better see some of that nice So Cal weather when I’m down there. Hook me up, will ya?
I’m not really a recipe follower, per se. I had a (I think) two or 2.5 pound piece of meat. I put all the veggies on the bottom, and then put the seasoned meat on top. I think I put about one and one half cups of liquid that contained some crushed basil, beef paste stuff, and worcestshire sauce, and poured it over the top of the meat. I didn’t measure the w sauce. The beef paste I put in according to my taste. I also added a few drops of Maggi seasoning. Then I just poured a little red wine (cabernet sauvignon) on top of the meat too. I didn’t measure it, sorry. For good measure, I put in a bay leaf. The hubby liked it, though he thought perhaps there was a little too much worcestshire sauce in there. My kids loved it. The recipe also said to put some flour in there, but I didn’t do that. I just poured the sauce (after removing cooked meat and vegetables) from my crockpot to a different pot, brought it to a boil, and added a little cornstarch to thicken it up.
I didn’t brown the meat first, I may try that next time. Seeing as how I cooked it on high for like 5.5 hours, I didn’t see the need to brown the meat. The next time though, I will make sure I start it earlier in the day and cook it on low.
I hear ya Kalley. Even though ACBG and I have made a pact to hit the stores the day after Valentine’s and snatch up as much on sale Valentine’s stuff as we can, I’m hankerin’ for some of those Cadbury’s Robin’s Eggs or whatever the heck they call those things. You know, the little speckled malt ball thingys? And some Cadbury Creme Eggs. And those Reese’s Eggs. And a chocolate bunny! And some M&Ms in the purty pastel colors. But no Peeps. I don’t like Peeps. Though I might buy a pack or two of Peeps to blow up in the microwave cause that’s fun.
VunderBob I expected Miss Kitty to go byebye real soon and I was right.
Huh. There was another drive-by witnessing yesterday, too.
I had a conversation about Why Crock-Pot Cooking is Difficult for Men yesterday. Driving Husband said that men naturally prefer to cook things that need constant spice adjusting and fiddling, and that crock-pots are terrible because you shouldn’t lift the lid for hours! That’s what I like about them! You just shove food in and then run off and do whatever you want, and when you come back, the food’s cooked!
Some guards do carry guns, but it requires a special licence and it’s usually just for Brinks truck guards and stuff.
Thinking good thoughts towards Shibb.
Picturing Lady Sybil Ramkin in belly-dancer gear is… is… difficult. Hmm. In Art of the Discworld, there’s a picture of Nobby Nobbs in harem pants and a beaded bra.
Faerie, what type of beadwork? Daisy chain, brick stitch, peyote? I haven’t done needle and thread beadwork for years. I think doing it with cats around would be almost as exciting as spinning with feline assistance. Cats like to help.
Do you ever randomly get the feeling your keyboard might run out of ink? I just did.
Maybe I should finish the laundry and clean the kitchen. Snack first.
[prayer]Dear Og, please help shibb get the multi-muulah consulting job so’s he can throw a big Floridope party and have it lavishly catered. Thanks for listening.[/prayer]
I just got back from a lavish luncheon with a girlfriend at a very good sushi restaurant. As usual, I ate too much and all that soy sauce has made me all thirsty so by the time I leave work I’m gonna feel bloated like the Michelen Man.
As penance, tonite’s dinner will be baked chicken and a green veggie…probably fart blossums. Maybe I will make a meatloaf tomorrow nite but don’t know if I’ll have room for any more leftovers in the fridge unless I evict the anarchist goulash.
I taught the girls how to do a spiral rope chain. They made bracelets bangle-style so I could avoid having to use up my short supply of findings. And the other stiches you mentioned… yes, yes and yes. I also do loomwork, but haven’t for a while although I own a very nice loom. I can follow directions pretty well, so I’m pretty good at learning new stiches from books and magazines, too. I love beads. They are so pretty and sparkly… OOOO Sparkly! is my personal motto.
I rotate my crafts so I don’t get bored. I also quilt and do cross stitch and needlepoint, can crochet, but I don’t do it often, and am trying to teach myself shuttle tatting just to see if I can do it. I have tried to knit, but I’m horrible at it. I uses to make my own SCA garb, but in general I dislike making clothes.
I don’t have cats anymore, but I know the annoyance when they want to help. My cat used to like to sleep on whatever quilt I had in progress, whether it was just still in pieces or in the frame being quilted. And pulling floss through the fabic was difficult when there was a tooth or claw attached to a cat attached to it.
The Elf just looks amazed and bemused that I can sit for hours upon hours doing small handwork and agonizing over getting a perfect 1/4" seam on my quilt blocks.
Over the weekend I ordered some more cross stitch and needlepoint supplies. It’ll be like getting a present from myself in the mail.
My keyboard doesn’t run out of ink, but my brain sometimes runs out of words…
You know I will, too, shall that come to pass. I’m all about the food. And the drinks. Just didn’t want to mention it up front; it would have felt too much like bribing good wishes. Maybe we’ll even create a fund to fly Rue down for the weekend (it’s pretty cheap if you plan in advance).
Excellent. I think that will be a good part of town for you to be in, as it’s pretty central. You’ll be real close to Old Town, which is a good place to go for Mexican food. Chris and I have a routine for how we do it. We start at Casa de Bandini for margaritas (they have good ones, but the food isn’t that special) and then we walk over to Old Town Mexican Cafe for dinner. Their food is better, and they have fantastic homemade tortillas (well, homemade as in they make them there).
If you’re looking for other things to do, I’d recommend www.signonsandiego.com for your surfing pleasure. It has a decent entertainment section that has restaurant reviews, event calendars, etc.
More than likely the weather is going to be real nice for you. I would almost guarantee it, but since we’ve had a pretty wet winter, it’s hard to tell. Plus, if I guaranteed good weather, sure as shit it would rain cats and dogs.
Okay, but I’m not sure how feasible it would be to fly everyone in. Maybe we’ll have to do West Coast/East Coast. I’m cool like that. Just so long as Dopers don’t start cappin’ one another in some sort of Gangsta rap thang. That wouldn’t be cool at all. It’s still several steps away from reality so it’s okay to dream at this point, but the posts I applied for are tech consulting mostly in the USA. So I might even be out West. Who knows? Or I could end up getting the one in Saudi Arabia working with Iraq and India. Not nearly as much fun but look at the money I’d save on beer and fast women.
Mmmm… Moussa, burqas, sheesha and fresh dates.
Well, yesterday’s meatloaf will be today’s meatloaf, whether my sweetie is up to having dinner or not. Last thing I need is a hunk o’raw meat going bad in the fridge! I will steam some rice and maybe cook some carrots. And saute some mushrooms. And bake a cake.
I suppose I should get that cake baking, huh?
That’s all I got. It’s just another day in Paradise here…
I didn’t have cake from Konditorei the other day so I’m having it today. Konditorei is a local cake shop and cafe–they serve a lot of salads and quiche so people have room for the cake. I get Frank’s Blackout, or Gerry’s Chocolate. Both are multilayer chocolate cake, with simply oodles of chocolate frosting, but, as implied by the name, Frank’s Blackout is darker chocolate, and so, in my mind, is just a tad better. They are also quite well-known for their champagne cakes, but I’ve never cared for champagne cakes, so I don’t know how they measure up.
Shibb, will you be flying us all out to the East Coast before or after you cook for me?
This reminds me of a story, and since it’s the MMP, it’s the perfect place to share it. Thursday night I was working a Weight Watcher meeting (working behind the desk doing paperwork) and was listening to the group discussion. They were talking about new foods they’d tried recently, and someone mentioned fresh dates. The leader said that she’d just heard of those recently (who hasn’t heard of dates?). Someone (a “my kind of person” someone) quipped that a fresh date could be really fun and was definitely something that everyone should try. Hilarity ensued.
This was the same topic that then went on to address “things I didn’t know were exercise”. I am proud to admit that I managed to keep my composure when someone mentioned sex.
Thanks so much. I looked at the link you provided. I’ve already mapped my way from the airport to the hotel and from the hotel to the Naval Medical Center. Of course, I’ll be also be purchasing a city map.
I’ll be in class from 7:30 through 4:45 each day. So, hopefully daylight hours will be a little more extended by then, so I’ll have an hour or so of daylight in the evenings.
I’m stuffed. I had a salad from the dining facility and put peas, shredded carrots, green peppers, cheese, eggs and bacon on it. I then added my own raspberry vinegrette. They didn’t have the craisins again today. Bah!
I took some vacation time last week to spend time with my wonderful wife and celebrate her birthday. Her actual birthday was on Sunday. Not this most recently past Sunday, but the Sunday before that. You know, the Sunday before the Monday of the MMP for last week, which I didn’t post in because I was on vacation and stuff. We didn’t go anywhere, but I enjoyed the time off, even with computers catching on fire and ice storms sneaking up on us and power outages and stuff like that. That sort of exciting stuff made the vacation time more interesting.
I have been very lucky that nothing in my fridge has gone bad for quite some time. Of course, I made an example of the last thing that went bad. It was some baked chicken. It started looking mean and acting all rough and tough. I knew this would escalate quickly if I didn’t act fast, so I took that chicken out of the fridge and dropped it on the floor. I then stood by with the fridge door open so that all the other things in there could watch as the cats tore the chicken apart. Since then, everything in the fridge has been very polite and helpful. The cats sit by and wait for anything in there to make a move. One of these days something will once again turn to the dark side and the cats will have to repeat their demonstration.
Swampy, I may take you up on that hot tub sooner than either of us expected. May I run away from work, where they’re being less than obliging to Princess Ashes, and make you hot wangs to enjoy whilst tubbing? I’m a very good 1950s housewife.
Oh! Also, last night I thought of you, or my computer thought of you. Sort of. See, I was tooling around Amazon and on my reccommended list was a naughty book geared toward burly, furry gentlemen! Now, I didn’t immediately think of you, because you’re ever so much more dimensional than your bearishness. Plus, I’m a girl who likes guys and not generally a reader of naughty books, so my first thought was more like “wha-huh?, no way dude!” (because my valley girl past comes out when I’m suprised). Then I wondered what the heck books I’d been looking at would have made that particular book pop up, along with a book on a history of coroners in the US and europe. In the end I gave up and it will have to be a mystery why Amazon thinks I like reading about dead people getting cut up and gay erotica sub-groups.
They also seem to think my young daughter needs new galoshes, which is odd because I don’t have a daughter and live in the desert.
Cake for dinner sounds good. Shall I try that kind that is melty in the middle? The last time I tried it was, well, objectionable.
Oooh, fun! I’ve done SCA garb, although not for years- not since high school- and general sewing and corsetry and applique beadwork (European and Plains and Woodland patterns)and spinning (drop spindle) and weaving and wirework and chainmail and bead-and-eye-pin jewellery. With occasional forays into other crafts, but those are the main ones. I can’t knit, but I’m going to learn soon. That looks like a cool beading pattern. I’ll have to find my beading needles. They’re the worst kind to drop and step on, aren’t they?
I read a book on shuttle tatting once. It scared me. You’re very brave.
Question for Shibb or anyone else excessively food-minded- some day soon I’m going to make Nigella Lawson’s recipe for lamb shards on hummus, and I need to know what cut of lamb I should use. It’s basically lamb shawarma, except pan-seared instead of grilled- very thin little sliced of marinated lamb, briefly cooked in a very hot pan, sprinkled with lemon and pepper, and then dumped on a dishful of hummus. And then you eat it with pita and drink a lot of wine.
I’m thinking of doing it for Mr. Lissar’s birthday in a couple weeks. I only need about o pound of lamb, and I need to know what cut would be tender enough.
Oh, and Mr. Lissar says thank you for all the good vibes.
I meant to say this earlier, but I was running to meet someone for lunch (no doubt the reason I messed up that post):
Congratulations to Mr. Lisslar on the new job - that’s great news!
Shibb, I’m crossing everything I can cross in the hopes you get the job you want. Good luck!
BelZarak, you are evil. Welcome to the MMP, you should fit right in.
Now, I’m off to meet friends for Thai, because I’m such a popular girl. That’s right, a lunch *and * a dinner date! Think the short skirt has anything to do with it?
Hey - you mean the 23rd? That’s my birthday! Does that make me your wife? No, that can’t be. My sweetie is FairyChatDad, even tho he only posted a couple of times eons ago. And I know he wouldn’t have a sock, at least not the kind that one wouldn’t wear on one’s feet. So you can’t be him. So never mind. But Happy Belated B-day to your Mrs.!!
I have chocolate cake. Just finished frosting it. Triple chocolate fudge with fudge frosting. No reason. No occasion. Just wanted chocolate cake.
