I just re-watched Season 1 to try and decide why I was still watching this show. Season 1 was hilarious! So funny. Celia was such a bitch, Nancy still had a relationship with her kids (and Andy) and she was just trying to make a go of it and seemed to almost have a handle on it. That was pretty much the way I felt until they burned Agrestic, too. Once Conrad and family were out of the picture I think the show jumped…albeit slowly and painfully.
Now I just don’t enjoy it and sometimes it makes me downright pissed off. Nancy is SO selfish and she barely has a relationship with her family anymore. She’s made all the wrong decisions. Had Agrestic still been around I think she could have run her little business forever with no problem. Grow house and all.
Season 1 was so much fun to re-watch with all the pot references. As a smoker, I just loved seeing all the potheads, the medical marijuana store and the growers conference they went to to buy a plant. And I think Nancy had the most chemistry with Conrad. They would have made a good couple. Now I actually like Esteban more than Nancy and that’s not a good thing!
I’m going to verrrrrryyyyyy cautiously suggest that there was more to said rape scene than meets the eye. She didn’t seem particularly disturbed. In fact, sorry, she seemed a little “into it.” Actually I rather got the impression that she manipulated him and was pleased ( if conflicted, as she is every second of every day about every single thing ) with the outcome. I think Esteban was fooling himself if he thought he was actually in control in that moment - I think Nancy was. To her I think it was rough sex rather than rape and in its own incredibly twisted way confirmed to her that she had a hold on Esteban and might not be killed for her treasonous ways afterall.
Nancy has made it explicit in this season ( including in her own words ) that she is an adrenalin junkie. An exceptionally selfish adrenalin junkie, who likes to think of herself as a good person, but who is slowly coming to realize she’s not. It’s a more absurdist version of Breaking Bad.
She’s not smart ( unlike Walt from BB ), but she’s cunning ( which Walt isn’t ), which unfortunately is short-circuited by the fact that she is above all things foolhardy. But for whatever reason she has been able to consistently mesmerize every significant male character that isn’t her sons. It is the unfortunate secret to her longevity to date. I think that scene with Esteban was just a particularly disturbing extension of that.
Me and the friend that introduced me still really like it. We watched Monday’s episode just yesterday when I visited her, and we both admitted our secret love for Ignacio.
Does anyone else think that Nancy finally pulled her head outta her ass on last night’s episode? She finally realized that she had to get back in control of her life. I cannot believe that Esteban really thought that Nancy would give birth at home. And did you hear scary Mexican guy say “This way you’ll never have to leave?” Thank you, Nancy for using your brain for once and actually thinking of your child.
Semi off topic but does anyone know what that circular hammock type thing is in Silas and Doug’s store. I’m in love with it.
I’m pretty surprised they let her go. Considering her car was “in the shop,” I assumed that meant they didn’t want her to leave–which meant, they were watching her and wouldn’t LET her leave.
Watching a full-term preggo get into the General Lee was worth a chuckle or two. Still not sure this show still has “it,” but that was amusing.
I’ve watched just bits and pieces this season, nothing last season (didn’t know Agrestic burned down), so I should probably just stay out of this thread. But I gotta ask, if Esteban had ulterior motives for the birthing room, why didn’t he have someone watching Nancy? It seemed awfully easy for her to get away. Except for the part where she had to crawl in the car window, of course.
Did he just want to make sure that Nancy didn’t take the baby and run?
I haven’t checked in on this thread in a while, I’ve been pretty distressed about the way the show is going, but I am totally back on board after this week’s installment, which I am about ready to declare the BEST EPISODE…EVAH!!!
Nancy finally got the sense to kick scumbag Esteban out of her life, Andy seems to be growing up…I was literally applauding the end of the episode!
And the subplots were hilarious too, loved the Dean/Doug/drawer scene, Celia is back in fine form, and I am very happy to see Lupita back in the mix. I hope the lady doc sticks around, I like her. Overall, although Esteban will obviously be back to stir up mischief, the show seems to be moving back towards comedy and away from darkness. Two resin-stained thumbs up.
I hope they do stay away from the dark stuff. It was too much. I was worried about how they could possibly get back to the old feel without being totally ridiculous. But to be honest I don’t even care - they could have Esteban go away and never be mentioned again and I wouldn’t care if they made the show light hearted and funny again. I started rewatching season 1 on Net Flicks instant view on Sunday and realized I’d totally forgotten how different the show was.
Damn, spoke too soon. Looks like Nancy was about ready to reverse course and go back to Esteban. Maybe her son getting shot will spark some sense into her?
And WHY the hell is Dean hanging out with Celia again?? Argh…
Not too surprised that this thread isn’t running along.
The show’s gotten desperate. It’s like someone’s given Kohan marching orders to insert the “funnies” in each scene. So, is (ditch)Weeds coming back for another season?
You would think so, but noooooo… Bitch had to go marry the fucker instead, but only after ensuring that she and her family will be targeted by well-paid hitmen.
Meanwhile, Shane is turning into a classic masochist with his refusal to take the pain pills. I wonder if they’re going to go anywhere with that; I could easily see him starting to self-harm if his home situation continues as-is. And he really shouldn’t be in a swimming pool with a major wound like that, even if it is wrapped in duct tape (as it appeared to be).
Nancy’s clearly beginning to take on the role of Drug Kingpin (Queenpin?), and apparently doesn’t have any qualms about it.
Final complaint: what the hell was up with bringing Lupita back for one episode, and then completely forgetting about her?
I imagine it was to pre-empt any “Who’s watching the baby?” questions from viewers. The suspension of disbelief when watching this show is fragile enough as it is.
Sigh… clearly Nancy is not going to stop making blatantly self-destructive decisions and I just need to deal with that. Shane’s mental health is clearly an issue (remember the brief subplot from season three when he started having hallucinations of his dead father, then apparently suddenly stopped?) and he also seems to be developing a bit of a drinking problem. Anyone would think the poor lad doesn’t have positive adult role models or something…
It’s interesting that Andy and now Silas appear to be becoming more responsible and mature as Nancy grows increasingly erratic.
Overall I think this season is a big improvement over the last one, which I think was the weakest. The show changed in a big way when Agrestic burned, and I think it took them a season to figure out where they were going.
I know everyone is under contract for one more season after this one, so I assume there will be a Season Six barring some massive drop in the ratings, and I have no idea if that is happening. I know I had an anxiety attack at the end of last episode when they announced there were only three more episodes left!
Talking to myself here…must be time to fire up some more MILF.
As we approach the end of the season I am quite impressed with it. The cast really seem to be playing well off each other and the writing is compelling. Against my better judgment I find myself being sucked into not totally hating Esteban anymore (though I am guessing his days are numbered).
Very happy to see that Isabella looks to be playing a bigger role in the anti-Celia campaign (and loving the Dean/Doug bits). I hope Shane gets more to do than sneak beers soon (and would any mother in the world really have fallen for that move??). Nice to see that Andy has fallen in love, although given that his girlfriend is (a) being stalked by crazed anti-abortionists and (b) played by a rock star who probably doesn’t have time to commit to another full season, I am not thinking that will be a happily-ever-after type deal.
Looks like we are heading for a cliffhanger ending, probably with Pilar’s campaign to kill Esteban and/or Nancy and Nancy’s efforts to kill Pilar colliding (glad to see Guillermo back, too, he plays freaky and evil so well). Only two more episodes.
Up until the Estaban getting arrested twist, I didn’t see Guillermo going ahead with fulfilling Nancy’s contract on Pilar. There’s no percentage in it for him, but if he strings Nancy along until the very end and then turns her over to Pilar, then Guillermo can pretty much write his own ticket in Mexico.
Now, I’m not sure that Pilar will even care about getting Nancy out of the way. Whether the charges stick or not, the mere fact that Estaban has been arrested for corruption precludes his ability to be elected. (The electorate might not care, but there’s no way he’s going to be able to raise any of the ‘clean’ money he was lining up, and that’s really the only way he can beat Pilar’s candidate. She’s got all the other influences/avenues sewn up.)
One thing I love about Weeds is that you never have an idea where it is going next. Sure, some (or most) of the storylines are over-the-top, but it is still fun to watch!
Nancy always seems to come out “smelling like a rose”, despite some pretty hairy situations. The characters are great - and there are so many laugh out loud moments.
Realistic? Hell no!
Fun to watch? Hell yes - and hope the show runs for many more seasons!
I wouldn’t call her continued slide to the bottom smelling like a rose, but she does seem able to avoid worse consequences for her string of very bad choices. It seems to me that she’s lucky to be staying alive after all this. But I get what you mean.
