I don’t miss them. But growing up, one could purchase hot dog with mustard flavoured potato chips. What are/were the weirdest widely available flavours you can recall?. Were they edible?
The fact that this thread calls the snack in question “chips” instead of “crisps” but speaks of their “flavour” rather than their “flavor” is giving me Rhode-Island-clam-chowder-type* mild disorientation.
Anyway, I personally am a fan of dill-pickle flavourored chiprisps, but I don’t know how “weird” they are considered in general.
(*) The pink stuff made with cream and tomatoes. Mind you, not saying it isn’t tasty.
I once tried pickle-flavored potato chips
Ate a few and then threw in the trash.
I’ve given up on trying weird stuff .
FWIW I am Canadian. But not Canadian enough to consider “ketchup” my favourite chip flavour, how about that, eh?
I was in Singapore a couple of weeks ago. I saw seaweed flavored Lay’s in one store, Like this:
Not overly weird, but not that long ago I was looking for something to eat and saw some nacho cheese tortilla chips and asked someone if they were any good. She said ‘they’re fine, but they’re potato chips, not tortilla chips’.
I ended up not trying them. Nacho Cheese Potato Chips doesn’t really do it for me.
That reminds me, when I lived in India I liked the regional Lay’s chip flavo/ou/oh the hell with it/rs there, such as Spanish Tomato Tango and India Magic Masala. Spicy!!
But I don’t know if that counts as “weird”, they were normal basic flavors for that market, not culinary oddities.
Ditto. I’m struggling to find a flavor that I would consider both “weird” and “widely available.” Dill pickle chips is probably the closest I can come. There’s also spicy dill pickle that are findable. Both are fantastic, but I’m a huge fan of salt & vinegar, so this is just basically salt + vinegar + dill (+ hot pepper).
Sure, I’ve had a bunch of unusual flavors by American standards at the Asian groceries, but I wouldn’t call them widely available, as you really have to seek them out. And then there’s the limited time offerings that come out once a year with Lays.
I’m not a big fan of the squid flavoured chips you can get at the Asian grocery store.
I had some Lamb & Mint-flavored chips in New Zealand that were quite tasty.
Seen- lays chicken and waffles.
Eaten-beer cheese
I don’t know if anyone finds this weird or not, as most of you probably think everything in Australia is eventually going to be attempted as Vegemite flavour. Which, sadly, seems to be the case. But I maintain that this is nonetheless a travesty, even if you like vegemite.
They had these in the late 1970s. They were disgusting.
That actually sounds really good.
It did to me. The first chip was good. All the rest tasted like stale beer.
I got some fried egg flavored chips from Universal Yums that were quite good, also the lays brazilian picanha flavor they had going a few years back was the absolutely best chip I’ve ever had.
I like the dill pickle potato chips. I bought a bag of the waffles and chicken chips, but tossed them after tasting. Just vile.
Haven’t tried them but I submit Chazz Chips from Lithuania.
They have some other interesting flavors such a mussels and white wine, pink soup, cepelinai (sausage), bloody mary, truffle, and hemp and jalapeno.
