Weirdest Potato Chip Flavour

Have you tried Worcestershire Sauce flavour? Those things are awesome.

Oh, yea! Back in the UK but it’s been 20 odd years now. I do sometimes use Worcestershire + ketchup as a dip for my fries. Love Wooster sauce in general.

Not flavor but maybe texture.

Growing up in India, potatoes would be harvested in late summer and prices would drop. We as a family would buy a lot of potatoes, slice up potatoes in mandolin slicers, and then boil the chips in salted water. Then they would be sun dried on cotton cloth - they stick a bit and had to be peeled off when dry. The result will be sundried potato chips. These would be stored in tins and throughout the year, on any given day, we would take some out and fry them fresh. YUM

Nowadays we just buy sun dried chips whenever we visit India.

The best I ever had were years ago, Doritos Late Night All-Nighter Cheezeburger flavor, in a black bag with neon signs. They actually DID taste a lot like cheeseburgers, pickle, ketchup and all. … The gas station convenience store often sells odd flavors. Herr’s had some meaty-flavored roast beef or baby back ribs flavor, also very good. All I see from them now is dill pickle or ketchup flavor.

So, they were only flavored by salt? No other spices?

Yeah - no other spices. A lot of cuisines in India use spices sparingly or none at all. For example in many of Bengal’s fish (seafood) recipes, spices are mostly absent : you want to taste the fish, not the spices.

Thanks, I hadn’t realized that. Every time I read/hear about Indian cuisine, it seems spices – and a lot of them – are the be-all end-all.

Isn’t that a variation of the way potatoes are preserved in the Andes?

I do not know what happens in the Andes. There is nothing special in this process.

Banana remnants have been found in Indian archaeological sites (circa 2500 BC like Harappa) and Banana / Plantain chips were/are made into chips using a similar process. Tapioca “chips”(https://www.vegrecipesofindia.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/sabudana-papad-recipe33.jpg) in India, are also made in a similar way. Tapioca chips are crunchier and fluffier when made fresh.

Was scrolling looking for these here! Hostess sold those for about ten minutes in the 70s. They sold quite well at first, as people saw them, shook their heads, and said, “I gotta try those”.

Then they tasted one and threw the bag away.

The apple pie chips are nasty. Don’t waste the money.

If it gives you any idea of the grossness magnitude, even my 8 and 11 year old junk food fiend boys wouldn’t touch them.

Thanks for taking one for the team. :+1:t4:

Do try the mango sherbet with chamoy. Sublime.

Usually the HEB oddities like that are really good, but the apple pie ones are just terrible.

My favorites are Tapatio hot sauce flavored, which I think are delicious. But they seem to have stopped making the potato chips and only make corn chips, now. I do wish we could get ketchup flavor here in California.

I’m there for crab flavor. Surprisingly, I hated dill pickle. I like salt and vinegar, and onion and chive, and even chocolate coated chips (but they are too expensive). Shrimp aren’t bad but I think it very much depends on the brand.

I’ve always liked the “Paprika” flavor they sell in Europe- I think mine were from Czech Republic or Italy.

They’re sort of like barbecue chips, but missing something- the smoke flavor?

I was in Italy last year for work and went to the store for some snacks and found the following Pringles.

Indian Chicken Tikka Masala
Maylasian Red Curry
Ketchup
Ham & Cheese
Paprika
Texas BBQ Sauce
Roast Beef and Mustard

I was able to refrain from trying any.

They were big in Hungary, too. Here in Chicago, I sometimes see Chio-brand paprika chips (which were also sold in Hungary.) I believe they are a German brand, but I could swear I’ve seen them made in Hungary and Romania before.

I agree, if you strike “smoke” from the sentence.

I hate both paprika and ketchup chips. They make me sad. Just give me plain salted chips at that point.

I had some Ruffles or normal Lays “Magic Masala” chips the other day at the Indian grocery, and those were pretty awesome.

I don’t know if I’d like shrimp potato chips, but I love shrimp chips (shaped like FrenchFries).

You’re right, thanks, I was thinking of Long Island clam chowder with the tomato-cream combo. Duh.
