What happened to some of the more prominent posters?

You know, I don’t think that’s ever getting old. I’m going to make fun of Marley for the rest of his natural born life over that.

I imagine it happened this way:

Ed: Whatever you do, don’t touch that button.
Marley: Which button? This button?
Ed: Noooooo!!!

BOOOOMMM!!!

Ed:Goddamnit, Marley

Oh, my ears are burning

Well, I’m relatively new…

Now that Google crawls this place (too bad we weren’t careful what we wished for), your stuff is out there for all to see and stalk. Since the pissant decrepit shitrag pimps Creative Loafing “own” your posts, there’s nothing you can do about it. This is a very good reason to leave.

Dude, this is internet. Everything you post on line is able to be seen and stalked. That’s not big brother, that’s the internet. Anonymity is nothing more than a comfortable illusion based on the fact that no one is looking for you.

That’s true, but they didn’t use to make it as easy for them. Plus, the particularly one-sided arrangement WRT ownership of posts makes it a rather unpalatable situation.

Get off Facebook, cancel your account here, cancel all your e-mail addresses and move to a shack in Montana. Do it quick before they trace your IP address!

Nah, I’m kidding. Nobody’s coming for you. I know that because I’m in a van up the street tapped in to your wi-fi. Also, my younger brother’s got a key-logger on you. We do it as a hobby.

You don’t get it and and are resorting to formulaic responses.

Um… Hi?

So I get linked back to this board from xkcd, and find this thread, and that

  1. I can post again because you guys went the ad route instead of subscription-only.
  2. Some of the most prominent members from 10 years ago are still here. (Opal, TubaDiva, Colibri, Drain Bead…)
  3. Hi Opal! (Um… this meme’s still around, right?)
  4. Persephone (who I once met) and Ayesha have died… :frowning:
  5. Ooooookay I was going to mention another person by name and that name now has lots of controversy surrounding it apparently, so I’ll skip it.

I left around the time Satan was banned, tried to come back in, apparently, '03 and found the board had gone to subscription, and never really returned. And since I can post again now, um… maybe I’ll come back? I doubt too many people remember me.

But, yes, some people re-appear like this, I think.

So… um… hi! Again. Maybe?

Hah!

No, I get it. You are worried about Creative Loafing having the publishing rights to whatever is posted here and you are upset that it is now searchable by Google.

I get it, I just think that: 1) Your worries are ridiculous. 2.) It’s the goddamn wrong thread to voice them in.

Hi, I’m from the future, it’s really not that exciting

I miss Melody Harmonious (sp?)

She entertained us so much with “Ron-isms”.

Where did she go?

I miss being Graped by the Grapist

What does this mean exactly? At the bottom of this page I see “message board users retain the right to republish or repost their own work.”. How is it one-sided?

Hi again, Woody. Been a while. Hung out on Venus during the Interregnum, did you?

I wonder about her, too. Most everyone else mentioned are people I didn’t know or people who I already know why they left.

Maybe just taking a break.

I’m one of those, but I am not a prolific poster, so most of the board isn’t aware of me. Those of us like this would lead to an undercount for that part of the population.

  1. It’s only for lists of two that need to be expanded to three.
  2. We’ve been trying to kill it with fire for several years now.

You’re worried that you are going to miss out on the big bucks when Creative Loafing publishes their vast compendium of board posts?

If you think your posts are that valuable, you could always just republish them yourself. You retain rights to your own posts.

I’ve given permission for some of my Staff Reports to be republished elsewhere. Trust me, even if I had asked for royalties (I contributed them gratis to a compilation edited by a friend) I wouldn’t have made enough for a cup of coffee (at least at Starbuck’s).

IANAL, but that is a gross exaggeration. The text at the bottom of every page says, “By posting on this board you grant the Creative Loafing Media, Inc., and its successors and assigns a nonexclusive irrevocable right to re-use your posting in any manner it or they see fit without notice or compensation to you.” I’ll bet that every other message board in existence has a similar statement. Here, for instance, is the relevant clause from the Yahoo! Message Boards Terms of Service, “With respect to Content other than photos, graphics, audio or video you submit or make available for inclusion on publicly accessible areas of the Yahoo! Services other than Yahoo! Groups, the perpetual, irrevocable and fully sublicensable license to use, distribute, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, publicly perform and publicly display such Content (in whole or in part) and to incorporate such Content into other works in any format or medium now known or later developed.”
