What if the Cubs Were to, Uh, You Know

Supposing this year the Cubs, uh, …you know. If you were a Cubs fan, could you even deal with it?

I mean, on a strictly emotional level, what would life be like for me once The Thing I’ve Been Waiting For All My Life actually happened? Remember at the end of The Truman Show? At the end, Truman escapes and tells the world “good bye.” The viewers stare at one another in stunned silence for a few seconds and then ask “Is anything else on?” Would it be like that? Once “IT” has happened, do we just enjoy the moment and then move on to something else?

Also, Harry Caray and Steve Goodman are dead. Steve Stone has gone into self-imposed exile, Mark Grace is with Arizona, and Ryne Sandberg is off playing with Legos® or something. Really, the people to whom it should matter most are either dead or have other things on their minds.

And on a practical level, could Chicago handle it? Would there be riots in the streets?

Still, I can’t help but imagine that the ghosts of Cap Anson, Andy Pafko, Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers, Frank Chance, Phil Cavaretta, Hack Wilson, Stan Hack, Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Ron Santo, Ferguson Jenkins, and others are lingering out there in the ivy, cheering on the boys… [sub]OK, so not all of those guys are dead, but you get my drift.[/sub]

sigh

Here’s hoping… fingers crossed

Hell would freeze over.
Pigs would fly.
Handy would stop at 9999 posts.
Everyone would get along.

I believe the Cubs are currently good enough to make the playoffs. Even in their low offense form. They can’t hope to get very far unless they make a move or some players get hot for the rest of the season. If they make “it” there will be a riot. If they win “it”, you can be rest assured that there will be rioting to put European soccer riots to shame. I have little doubt in that.

Cubs win anything, hahahaha. Thanks guys for the good laugh. Remember there is always next year.

heh heh.

Who’s up for a Chicago Dope-lootin’-fest in October?

Actually, what I was thinking was the end of Princess Bride, where Vizini is wondering what to do . . . here he is, he’s killed the six-fingered man, and he’s tried all his life to do it. Now where does he go?

rastahomie, let’s first hope the Cubs don’t do what LA did in '91; blow a huge lead in the second half of the season.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: Cubs/Red Sox in '01… Game 7. World blows up. Jesus arrives. Judgement Day. Armageddon. Etc.

I dunno, we lived through Philly winning in 1980.

But I think for good measure you should toss the White Sox into the picture.

I agree with White Lightning. It will be the end of the world as we know it.

It’s going to happen.

And when it does, look in the Chicago Sun Times for the classified ad **Crunchy Frog ** is going to place about it.

[sub] Crunchy, you’re going to regret making that bet hehehehehe [/sub]

Well, if THAT happens, then my social life is BOUND to pick up. Because hell will have frozen over.

[sub]And yes, I am a long-suffering Cubs fan[/sub]

When playing the demo for Baseball Mogul 2002 (a managerial simulation), I played as the GM of the Cubs for one season. We were the division champs but lost the pennant to the Braves in 7 games. The Braves went on to beat the Red Sox in another 7.

Oh, and Pun, that was Inigo Montoya. How could you forget? He says it often enough.

Forgot to mention, the demo only allowed one season of play. After the first season as Cubs GM, we were $400K in debt and unable to resign any high-priced free agents.

Hey, Jeff Olsen…you know, every time I see your name, I keep thinking of Jimmie Olson, Superman’s sidekick. Maybe I could take you under my wing, and we could be like a crime-fighting duo.

If either the Cubs or the Red Sox were to, um, you know, then there’d be massive celebrations in the city and region, and lots of pompous nonsense written and said about the end of the curse and so forth. But after a while, if they didn’t turn into perennial winners, that stuff would get old, and they’d be back to being considered failures - but with the lovability and the special panache gone.

In a way, it may be more fun being a fan of a “cursed” team than a simple loser, mightn’t it? I just hope to find out some day.

Well, according to my husband, the Cubs are going to do it this year. He also said they were going to do it last year, and the year before, and the year before…

I hope they make it. I’m not a baseball fan, but I can’t stand watching the disappointment in my husband’s face every time they lose. Then again, I’m sure he’ll be a joy to live with when they do win, what with all the “I told you so”'s he’s going to be tossing around.

I do know this. There will be a riot. Look what happened back in the early 90s when the Bulls won their…was it the second or the third? Two cabs got overturned by people in the streets. This is Chicago. This is apparently how we celebrate.

And, yes, my husband (and countless other fans) will probably be like Inigo Montoya: “What the hell do we do now?” But I’m sure they’ll live

I think Cubs and Red Sox fans enjoy losing every year. It’s such a part of them that they would be at a complete loss as to how to behave. They’d have to find some other miserable team to root for, like the Clippers or better yet, my hometown Warriors.

Except for the last one, even the Indians were in the playoffs every season since '95. If they can do it, the Cubs can also.

And Superdude:

What’s going on, mentioning that the “Cubs might win the World Series” is a taboo as S-E-X all of a sudden?

Woooo Hooo! Glad someone jinxed it… and it wasn’t even a Card’s fan!!!
