Vocationally, ethnically and by body type.
A young woman I knew once asked me why men think it’s such a big deal to talk about who they’d like to fuck. She said “So what? Every guy wants to fuck us!” 
My guess is that the guys who talk the most about MILF’s are adolescents (who probably talk the most about sex in general) so the concept of an older woman to them equates to a woman who’s around 30.

I never did explain my definition of MILF. Limiting it to people that have children just your age, even with a wide berth, is too narrow.
MILF means someone who has a child that is within the “half your age + 7” rule. It can then be extended to someone who is old enough to have said child, even if they don’t. (Assuming motherhood at whenever the average is for their community.)
Or, to be less technical, the idea is just that it’s a generation older than you would be expected to date. If you have or could have a daughter that I could date without raising any eyebrows, you’re a MILF.
Finally, there’s the whole subjective thing. What I was getting at is that I’ve never seen MILF used as something personal in the media. People seem to be objectively called MILFs–and, in that case, it refers to a hot woman with an adult child–and the child is usually thought of as hot in their own right.
By the way, all attractive cougars are necessarily MILFs , by my (laxer) definition.

The porn industry is marketing itself to fetishes. Women move from the “teen” category (can be 30 in pigtails, as long as she is petite, skinny, young-looking) straight to “MILF”. There’s no regular hot women, it has to be MILF.
The origin of the term is definitely loaded to when it is relevant to talk about older women you’d like to fuck, so it was set for teenagers talking about the mothers of their buddies and the like that they would like to fuck. Thus the designation. Agewise, that sets the limit in the late 30s to lower 50s. That is where the label gets assigned as an “objective” descriptor.
Not to be confused with “cougars”. To differentiate:
MILF = Mother I’d Like to Fuck
Cougar = Mother who would like to fuck me
Cougar does not necessarily imply attractive, just on the prowl for younger men. Though it’s only sexy if she is attractive. If she’s not attractive, it’s just scary.
Once you’re an adult, it becomes less meaningful to label women in that age zone as MILFs, as they rapidly enter your acceptable dating zone. The distinction of if they have procreated or not is not really the point. And once you are older than them, it’s pretty silly to use the term.
It could reasonably* be extended to a subjective term to refer to anyone of the generation older than you, say someone old enough to have a daughter your age. That makes it a bit less cross-relational, as the subjective nature means the person you are talking two may not share your point of reference. That’s why the objective category is at least useful.
By the way, I’m single, so I get unlimited freebies.
