Who will be Trump's running mate? (J. D. Vance Has Been Chosen)

Exactly. By this past spring, Trump had completely taken over control of RNC leadership; the new co-chair of the RNC is his daughter-in-law Lara.

If Trump tells the RNC, “I want to get rid of Vance, and replace him with someone else,” the RNC’s answer is not going to be, “we’re sorry, but our rules don’t allow for that.” It’ll be “yes, sir!”

That’s right. Though clearly it’s best for Trump if JD DOES play along. That would remove the 'Trump made a mistake’ storyline and change it into a ‘Trump chose wisely but was thwarted by [fill in the blank].’

I’ve guessed upthread that the blank will be filled in by some combination of carrot and stick for Vance: threats of bodily harm if he doesn’t “volunteer” to step aside, plus some kind of job/cash combination that would let him marginally save face.

I’m now wondering if the reason for the “voluntary” stepping aside might be something that can be blamed on Vance’s wife. That would please the base on two counts: it would show that, as they tend to want to believe, Women are No Damn Good, and it would also show that as they definitely believe, Non-Whites are No Damn Good.

So we may be hearing that Vance’s wife has a serious health problem, or that she changed her mind about wanting to be a VP’s wife, or some such thing.

In the meantime, Donald has to decide how he can make up this lost ground against Harris. Would Elise Stefanik take away all those female votes now going to Kamala? Would Marco Rubio reclaim the Latino vote, or Tim Scott the black vote?

Poor Donald. He was so confident of a landslide win against Biden that he could afford to indulge himself with a pick that reflected in a lovely, lovely mirror his own vicious hatefulness. And now he has to lower himself to pick someone who can actually bring him the votes he’s desperately going to need!

It’s not fair!11!!!

Personally, I don’t think so. Even with his famously poor diet and exercise regime, he does seem to have surprisingly good health. I think he’ll instead sink into dementia, like father Fred, who lived past 90.

As I said upthread, Trump is mercurial and has no use for rules. I can’t think of a time when he was told that he can’t do something and that successfully stopped him from doing it anyway. This is the guy who threw an insurrection and got the backing of the Supreme Court on it. Can’t does not apply to Trump. If he does not like the rule, it isn’t a rule and no one has the power to make it a rule. Trump already owns the RNC, he’s certainly not going to be bound by their dislike of his choices.

While I am firmly of the opinion that this earth is immediately better off the moment Trump is no longer with us, I would like him to live past this election. I want him to lose to a woman of color. I want him to go to jail. I want him to watch his support crumble as suckers stop paying his bills for him. I want a strong repudiation of who he is and everything he stands for. If he dies before the election, he doesn’t have to face any of this.

I agree. Because it’s not just about Trump going away. His followers need to feel the pain and humiliation along with them so that they are demoralized and don’t rear their fascist heads for the foreseeable future.

More brilliant ideas from Couchfucker McMaritalrape; childless people should have to pay more in taxes to provide for people with children.

Hmm. People with lots of kids living off of government aid paid for by hardworking Americans? I think St. Ronnie had a name for that.

I agree, I mean, Trump can certainly get Vance to “withdraw”, and I’m sure that in that circumstance there’s some route available for replacing a candidate.

Eh, I went and looked.

The Democratic and Republican National Committees have separate rules governing how they fill vacancies of presidential or vice-presidential nominees. Under Rule 9, the Republican National Committee explains how it fills a vice-presidential vacancy “which may occur as the result of death, declination, or otherwise.”

The rule allows the party to reconvene its national convention if it chooses or to move ahead with a vote of the smaller group of Republican National Committee members who would determine Vance’s replacement.

Could Trump Replace JD Vance? Experts Explain How It Would Work - Business Insider

On top of that, the RNC is essentially an arm of Trump’s campaign; they could just create a new rule.

Vance doubled down in an interview with Megan Kelly today, apologizing to cats first and then saying “I’m sorry it is true”

Offended by everything, ashamed of nothing. Perhaps a recipe for success in life, but most of us and our siblings abandoned it after the first time the car was pulled over and the slapping began.

I’ll bet that Donald Trump got slapped by his dad. Maybe even more than just slapped.

Does he not know about the child tax credit?

And yet Republicans oppose Biden’s plan to expand child tax credits.

Vance was confused, because they are often referred to as “Loveseats”.

We’ve all seen “FJB” stickers, etc. If I find one that says “FJD”, I’m in.

I just want him to lose. Period.

And his sorry excuse for a running mate, too.

Here’s a question. Remember how James Gunn got in trouble for his old tweets? Those were hiding in plain sight, and nothing else to my knowledge has come out since.

Most of the stuff about Vance has also been hiding in plain sight. The question is whether stuff a bit more hidden will continue to come out and embarrass the ticket, or has most of it been dredged up already?

Of course, I think Vance will continue to disgrace himself and the Trump campaign in real time, but a little more dirt wouldn’t hurt.

In theory, J D Vance was thoroughly vetted.

Yeah, about that…

I’m sure the campaign was 100% aware of Vance’s previous (maximally) negative comments about Trump, and… WTF?!

You can’t can’t CAN’T put someone like that on your ticket. As anyone could have predicted, our side is now constantly playing that shit like Muzak in a 1970s supermarket.

I know Trump appreciates those who kowtow before his golf shoes, but c’mon–it just makes no sense.

Not as salacious as the rumor about couch escapades, but the childless cat lady thing has taken off also, judging by what I’m seeing online, and Vance is already scrambling to try to distance himself from that brouhaha.

But many top Republicans have made negative comments about Trump before switching to supporting him.
