I thought summer came in Febuary this year or thereabouts?
SHYTITS aka Shiny Hot Yellow Thingy In The Sky is back
The last few days have been just fine for us peasants up 'ere in’t frozzen norf but not so good for those suvvern poofs wiv their lectric lights and indoor lavs and other new invenshuns.
Serves 'em right I say, I’ll go feed t’ferrets now
Yeah, last time the weather report said that, there were floods in NE and SE England that left hundreds homeless and cost billions in damage.
Colour me cynical, I don’t believe the weather reports much 'round here. I pack for all 3 seasons - kinda warm / wet, cold / wet, and sunny (for 15 minutes at a time).
So this weekend when my friends are off to the Shrewsbury Folk Festival, they’re promised glorious weather. How come last weekend when I was down in Devon at Beautiful Days, it rained all soddin’ weekend?
I get to spend my weekend unpacking a muddy tent, washing it, drying it, cleaning out the bag it’s packed in, and then packing up a clean and dry tent ready for the next weather-based fiasco.
I feckin’ hate mud.
I haven’t been going to Singing Beach in Manchester. Gorgeous beach, lovely deep water, and MBTA accessible.
Today I woke up foolishly optimistic, and planning to go to Newport. Instead, I’m going to drive up to Maine. Fuck it, if it’s too cold to lie on the beach anyway (let alone swim) I may as well go north, enjoy the pretty scenery and eat some fabulous lobster. With jeans and a sweatshirt on. Grrr.
I’m really, REALLY hoping that Saturday lives up to the hype. I’ll be in Rhode Island, so I’m planning on going to Bonnet. I have two shiny new bikinis going to waste, dammit!
Ha! They always make it look like that. If you go check the forecast in a few days it’ll still look like it’s going to be delightful soon.
Wankers.
But look…someone does like this lovely English weather.
Yea gomisboy, I know what you mean…
I’m probably the only guy in the U.S. that doesn’t find a southern accent appealing…but give me a woman with an English-type accent…yeaaahhhhh
Take a woman from Turkey…give her an English accent…
Stronger words are called for me thinks. Don’t they realize people PLAN for the bank-holiday weekend based on weather reports? Bloody useless scumbag shite-faced wanker tosspots.
I guess the wanker part was appropriate
Walking home the other night, I had to keep my eyes totally focused on the sidewalk for the whole walk home from the bus station (about 800 yards or so) because there were at least 2 LARGE (6-8 inches long, 2-3 inches wide) slugs per paving stone. It was bloody ridiculous! I don’t mind the little blighters, not having a garden of my own, but it was a real falling hazard - those suckers are slippery when you step on them in the rain in the dark!
BlinkingDuck - amen, brother. When I first came over here, it was Aussie chicks, so much so that I was seriously considering moving there, but then I met a girl from Kent with a super posh accent… put her in a dark-skinned body (or even with a good tan) like those gorgeous Turkish girls, and I would never let her out of my sight!
Huh. And why has no one ever told me about this beach before? I’m so there. Saturday.
MBTA accessable? By the Gloucester/Rockport commuter rail, you mean? Tell me more!
Fucking slugs. I hate slugs. We’re talking full-on phobia.
Fortunately, it’s mostly snails on the pavements around here. Crunch crunch crunch all the way home.
Bleh. I stepped on two snails last night just on the way from the back door to the garage. (ten feet maybe) Crunchy with a mushy aftertaste.
But I’ve got their number. Horse bran. They love it and eat that instead of the plants. Makes 'em die from over eating.
- and it doesn’t kill the hedgehogs like slug pellets do (when they eat the slugs that have eaten the pellets)
The back of my garden is a writhing mass of huge slugs.
They’ve eaten all my herbs (except for the sage and the dill for some reason), a beautiful asiatic lily, a rosebush, half of my amaryllis, and my artichoke plant. Fuckers.
Southern Europe done stole your summer. Sorry 'bout that. You’re welcome to claim it any time you like.
Any time you like is fine.
Sooner the better.
It’s 95 degrees out there right now, at almost 7 pm. The predicted high for tomorrow is 97. It’s been like this all summer. Isn’t it fall yet?
Mum came over to visit the last week of July. She said it was the first time she had worn a short sleeve shirt all summer, and she is from Sussex. Of course, for true contrast, it was 98 and humid the first day she was here…
I must admit that one of the things i liked about living in New York was that the weather did actually tend to do exactly what they predicted it would.
Of course i could still never quite managed to ditch the British habit of carrying an umbrella everywhere with me.
Yup. Newburyport/Rockport line to Manchester(by-the-Sea  ), take a left out of the parking lot, walk about a half a mile to the beach (just follow everyone else!). There’s a bathhouse, so bring something to change into for a more comfortable ride home. There’s also meh-ish (but not too terribly pricey as I recall) snackbar.
Cons:
$5 walk-on fee
Can get very crowded on weekends
Inflexiblity of the train schedule. As I recall, there’s an 8:30a and an 10:15a out of North Station, and a 2:20p and 5:30p return back to Boston. Three hours is kind of a large chunk of time to be stuck anywhere, even somewhere as beautiful as Singing Beach.
For the 4th day running the SHYTITS has been pouring its rays on the chosen people of NW England
Yup, all looks good for the bank holiday!
My missus has gone to the in-laws for the weekend, so it’s even better timing
Thanks, DianaG! I’ll try to get there.
please god let it keep up… I’m in Liverpool this weekend…
