If Dialidol is correct then Jordin is in trouble.
Really? A few minutes ago, it was
Haley, then Gina. Jordin was third from the bottom. Damn.
I liked last week better. This week there were several performances I only watched half of because they were so utterly and unsurvivably boring.
I think everyone, including the judges, is too hard on Haley. Her voice is quite good (MUCH better than Gina), she looks great, and she has gone out of her way to be more interesting and less Disneyesque. I wish she’d walk around the stage a little less, but she can really flirt and shimmy.
I thought Gina was much better tonight and no one was horrible except for Sanjaya. Jordin showed that she can sing anything. What a huge difference in style from last week. I think that she is the only one with real star power. Melinda and Lakisha are great singers, but I’m not sure I’d pay to watch them.
Speaking of Jordin, how cool would it be to have a remake of Fame with her starring?
I rate the performances thus:
- Melinda. As usual.
- Blake. That was a very smooth performance, and a good rendition of the song.
- Jordin. Great voice, appropriate attitude for the song.
- Gina. I like that she understands that sometimes less is more. Haley should learn that.
- Lakisha. I thought the opening was pretty bad, but the ending was great. She’s not nearly the performer Melinda is, however.
- Haley. Yes, she changed the meaning of the song, but she obviously intended to. It was a playful rendition that turned the song on his head, and I can admire that. Among other things.
- Sanjaya. I actually enjoyed that. For the first time, I’m hoping he doesn’t get booted.
- Phil. Well sung, but the judges were right - you sucked the life out of the song and turned it into a dirge. Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to tell everyone that you were thinking of your wife while performing that…
- Chris R. I don’t get the judges at all. I thought that was a weak performance. His voice has no power, and he’s not nearly as versatile with it as Blake is. They’re both trying to do the same kind of thing, but Blake is much, much better at it. Chris should go home simply because he’s redundant. Everyone else brings something a little different to the table.
Me! And she didn’t this week either, Tony specifically told her not to throw stuff on the end and she did anyway. I just can’t get past disliking her to subjectively judge how she did.
The arrangements sucked a lot tonight, Blake’s was too easy listening, Gina’s was too wistful, Phil was all minor key dirge, etc. I don’t know how much input the contestants have regarding the arrangements, and it must be particularly difficult deciding how to arrange a song you’ve only just heard for the first time in some cases, but ick.
Gina surprised me with how controlled her vocals were, and fuck Simon for being so dismissive especially considering she’s been taking his advice specifically about controlling her big ol’ voice and not pushing and being screechy.
Is Melinda going to find a way to sing a big showtune regardless of the theme every single week? She is fabulous at it, but I’d like to see her singing something else for a change.
Meh, I’m done seeing Melinda sing anything. She’s demonstrated her range (none) and so why bother listening to her do anything else? We’ve heard it already.
Sanjaya: That was him trying to show “them” that he really can sing?!?
Phil: OK, my source is the De-Lovely movie, but according to that, that song is supposed to be about obsession, not a happy happy joy joy love song. So I can’t fault him for making it dark. I can fault him for the corny delivery, as mentioned above the parodyness of it. “Night and Day” plus “Every Breath You Take”? Phil the Obsessed Stalker.
I’m glad Simon kept the “cabaret” comments to a minimum. These songs are supposed to be cabaret.
And Haley: S: “It was pageanty.” P: “Oh, you did your thing.” Yes, and her thing is pageanty. We can agree!
Oh I loved Simon’s response to Sanjaya: (paraphrased): let’s try a different angle tonight: It was great!
Obviously meaning that he was hoping that if he said the performance was good, the voters wouldn’t vote for Sanjaya, since so far when he says the performance is bad, they do vote. It looked to me like Sanjaya took him seriously though
His body lends itself to the wrong trousers. His legs are disproportionately short, and his thighs are disproportionately big. He will always look goofy.
Melinda’s dress was great this week and she was the best performance, hands down.
LaKisha blew off the advice AGAIN. She was just OK for me this week.
Chris…feh…I’m not nuts about him. It’s always fun to watch him try with all his might to NOT do runs.
Haley…she’s going for the sexy vote.
Gina dragged the song a bit, but I thought she did alright.
Sanjaya…best performance since his audition, but it doesn’t count because he should have been booted out weeks ago.
Light-bulb head…I think he fucked himself. It was a real downer.
Blake…He did a good job on the song, but his physical presence is beyond annoying. He has zero fashion sense and always looks like he just rolled out of bed. He needs to beg, borrow or steal enough money to hire a stylist.
Jordin. I love that kid. I think she’ll be in the top three.
All in all, better than last week, but still rather ho-hum.
I thought she followed the judge’s advice and left it off during the actual performance.
In the recap at the end, they did show her doing the crappy add-on at the end, but IIRC, that is from the dress rehearsal. I don’t think she did it during the actual performance.
Didn’t one of the judges compliment her on just holding the note at the end instead of doing a little riff at the end?
I finally convinced my husband to sit down and watch Pink Floyd’s The Wall with me. I haven’t seen it in many years, but wow! I really enjoyed it. So anyway, I missed most of Idol. Missed it? Well, I guess it would be more accurate to say I didn’t see it. I know who I like and who I don’t now and I don’t expect that to change.
I saw Gina and Sanjaya, and sure enough, I still don’t like them. I’m proud of Haley for recognizing exactly what her niche is in the show. Lakisha made me laugh by totally ignoring Mr. Bennett’s advice, although he was right.
I’d be happy to see Chris, Gina, Sanjaya, or the Light Bulb go.
Nope. She actually did the “ain’t no sunshine” line in the performance. This is at least the third time.
She looked a little pissed off last night. I think she’d rather not do the mentor thing at all.
After Simon’s comment, the camera went back to Ryan and Sanjaya and you could see (but barely hear) Sanjaya yelling to Simon “welcome to the universe of SANJAYA!!!” I think he actually thought Simon was coming around and finally acknowledging Sanjaya’s awesome talents.
I think Haley knows she can’t compete vocally with the others, particularly Jordin and Melinda, so she’s going with her strengths- nice singing and flirty but safe sexuality. She can stay around to the final two, as far as I’m concerned. Growl.
I think Gina looked the nicest I’ve ever seen her, despite that weird single braid in the front thing. I think it was the lipstick, or something. Anyway, I thought it was a good performance, and I’m generally not much of a Gina fan.
I actually really liked everyone but Haley and Sanjaya last night. I thought the songs showcased some actual vocal talent from the singers. It’s difficult for me to rank them as a result. I’ll try anyway.
- Melinda - Much, much better. Finally, she chose an interesting song and I remember why I liked her to begin with.
- Blake - Surprisingly, I thought his voice suited this kind of music very well. I thought he was really, really good.
- Gina - Very nice, though her look distracted me a little. Hated the outfit, and as usual wished she’d taken out the tongue ring so she could “pronunciate” better.
- Phil - I thought his voice shined in this kind of music. Well done.
- Lakisha - Good, but not as good as the others.
- Chris R. - pretty good, but so was everyone else.
- Jordin - Sorry, just not as good as previous weeks. This song bored me.
- Haley - What the hell was that? It looked like something out of a cheesy cheerleading competition at the Mall of America.
- Sanjaya. sigh I’m about at my wit’s end here. I’m so damn sick of the people who are voting for him just to spite Idol fans. What the hell is wrong with you people? (I’m looking at you, fusoya). As always, there’s a pretty simple solution to not liking a show: don’t watch it. Don’t ruin it for those who love it. There are plenty of shows on TV (as well as other forms of entertainment) that I think are stupid, but I don’t feel the need to pop into their threads and tell them how stupid it is and how stupid its fans are for liking it. I also don’t feel the need to try to get the show canceled with some stupid scheme that I think will kill the show. It’s immature, and it’s stupid, and it’s not going to work. Please find another way to entertain yourself.
Sanjaya is a creep. A Michael Jackson sort of oblivious-about-the-world-around-him creep.
I play Everquest 2 (an online game) and was very amused to see a “Corpse of Sanjaya” on the ground in one of the busy zones. That made me laugh.
Posting this late, since I was laying on the couch with a 101° fever while watching the show. This, of course, will probably effect my rankings, since I had my eyes closed a lot of the time, and was also quite distracted by how shitty I felt (things are fine this morning though, thanks). Anyway:

[li]LaKisha[/li][li]Melinda[/li][li]Chris[/li][li]Jordin[/li][li]Blake[/li][li]Phil[/li][li]Gina[/li][li]Haley[/li][li]Alternating between dipping my foot into a wood chipper and a pot of boiling salt water[/li][li]Sanjaya[/li][/ol]
Huh…again, I’m very surprised at my list. I was calling out my ratings to my wife who would then jot them down, but this list looks nothing like how I remembered their performances. Oh well – anything I don’t agree with now, I can just say it was the fever talking.
As for comments, not much today. A lot of last night is a haze, and I didn’t have my handy notepad that I use to jot down things that jump out at me. So, here’s what really stuck:
[ul]
[li]Ryan: “Let’s see what Simon has to say [about Haley]”. Simon: “You’ve got great legs”. Haley: “”. Excuse me, you simpering little Barbie doll? You’re going to go out there and showcase your legs in an attempt to cover the fact that you can’t sing for shit, and then you’re going to act offended when a judge calls you out on that fact? Fuck you seven times with a police baton, handle end first. You want to be respected for your vocal ability? Then get some damn vocal ability! Because right now, all you’re presenting to the audience is that you think you’re eye candy. Unfortunately, you seem to have convinced a good portion of them that it’s true. But hey, I wouldn’t worry about it though – it’s working for you. It’s the single reason you’re still on this show…hell, it’s the single reason you made it into the Top 24. It’s not like this is some big secret. So cram those rolleyes up your ass, smile pretty for the camera, and McPhee your way as far as you can in what is supposed to be a singing competition (which, hopefully, won’t be much further).[/li][li]Chris sounded good…really good. Not his best (I still think Geek In The Pink was outstanding), but good enough for his personal second. Also, I never pay much attention to how performers are dressed, but his outfit looked really sharp – good blending of current style with an old-school feel. Perfect look for a night like last night.[/li][li]I can’t quite put my finger on why, but when I was listening to Melinda’s performance, I couldn’t shake the image that I was listening to a detergent commercial. Might’ve just been the flu meds, but I kept waiting for Ryan to break in and say “New and improved Cascade!”. Still, it was a great job.[/li][li]If I were to Wednesday Morning QB my picks, I’d have gone Melinda, Chris, LaKisha, Gina, Jordin, Phil, Blake, Haley, Sanjaya[/li][/ul]
I agree with you about Chris. Great show from him last night. Melinda, I just sort of give her an auto-pass and go on to critique someone else. Her career is assured regardless of anything else.
