I agree, and laughed out loud when Simon said this. Not to nitpick, but I got a kick out of the word he actually used, “Incredible.” I’ll bet Simon carefully chose this word, which of course strictly means nothing more than “unbelievable.”

Actually, Jordin is gearing up as the frontrunner. Not that I’d buy an album with her or see a show, but I think she’d work very well.
When wil the producers pick a theme that leaves the big voice girls exposed for their lack of range (i.e. in genres) ? A rock theme would be nice.
These standards are meat and drink to us in the ~99 household. This is why kaylasmom and I spent so much of last night’s show shouting derisive scorn at the judges. Blake and Phil both deserved lambasting for their wooden performances (Phil was worse than Blake, FWIW, but YOU DO NOT SING A FOUR MINUTE SONG WHEN YOU ARE ONLY GIVEN TWO MINUTES TO SING, MR. BEAT-BOX!!!).
Melinda was flawless. My first feeling was that they should have saved her for last, but about halfway through the show I changed my mind. She should have gone FIRST, and everybody who followed her should have been told why they didn’t measure up to the standard she set. Simon telling her that the verse was boring was arrogant, ignorant and WRONG.
Frankly, I think Simon just doesn’t like the Great American Songbook. How else to explain him airing as a complaint the fact that a song, arrangement, or performance is “old-fashioned”? If you don’t want the classics treated with the respect they deserve, you shouldn’t schedule them.
Lakisha should go home, just because of implying that Tony Bennett and his instruction should go to hell. Oh, and because she couldn’t find the right key for the first 2/3 of her performance.
Haley, please decide how you feel as you sing Ain’t Misbehavin’; bluesy, torchy, or vampy. The smorgasbord of styles you tried to give us just. didn’t. work.
Gina, good job on Smile. Tasteful, understated, and you kept the microphone in front of your mouth so I didn’t have to look at your tongue stud. The red mezzanine on your hair was unfortunate, but I suppose it couldn’t be helped.
Sanjaya, you sounded like you were singing karaoke. It was not anything to rate an impression. And the suit makes you look, as Liberal so astutely points out, creepy.
Jordin, and Chris R. Please forgive me, but I can’t remember what either of you sang. I can only say that Jordin’s performance was good, and Chris’s wasn’t.
And who was it above that said they didn’t like Melinda’s hair? C’mon! Who doesn’t think D.W. is adorable?
I listen to the show (TV’s in the other room) and don’t actually watch them so I get the names mixed up. I sort of like it that way and I don’t have to look at Ryan or Paula. I guess I liked Phil more than most people did. He did have a very effortless Frank Sinatra quality when he sang last night and I liked it. He wasn’t the best but he wasn’t as terrible as they thought he was.
I thought they were all pretty good. My least favorite was Sanjaya. I think he’d be perfect on a cruise ship and I don’t mean that in a bad way. His voice isn’t terrible but it’s not that strong.
Btw…I’m about to leave on my first ever cruise. After 6 seasons of AI telling me that “cruise ship” is the bottom rung of the entertainment ladder*… I’m not sure if I should partake in any of the entertainment offered, or check it out and find that Sanjaya should only be so lucky…or what.

I think Simon gets too much static for those comments. He’s basically telling people they still have potential to make a living as a singer. If he said, “You couldn’t even get a job on a cruise ship,” that’d be harsh. All he’s saying is that he doesn’t think someone is going to be a star. And most people aren’t.
That’s my take on it, too. Somebody who can make a living singing on cruise ships is doing so much better than the average musician, it ain’t funny.
Case in point: Jennifer Hudson, who actually was a singer on a cruise ship before “Idol.” And Oscar.

This show is bullshit. I almost don’t want to watch any more. (I will, because I have no spine or will power, but I almost don’t want to.)
